Things are not clear here. Do you know the date of deportation letter and the reson of deportation? Is the date of deportation before they got married or after? before he filed for green card or after? Once you are married to an American citizen and the green card application is approved, you can not be deported unless for some criminal reason or you are missing some document asked or missed appointment. Because missing documents and dates can result the denial of green card application. Now, he has to prove that the marriage is not fake. May be the lawer missed some procedure or documets that resulted denial of green card (I had one of my friend left US because of lawer). There are lots of information online or USCIS website. I would suggeest people to avoid lawer.
