Hi Sajha Users,
One of my friend (a graduate student from Nepal) got caught cheating in the exam here in US.
Cheating Situation: He was only glancing at the answer paper of other student. Or you can say he was rubber necking (just looking at it, he didn't bring over the other students paper to his desk or he didn't cheat from the book).
However, some part of his answers did match with the paper that he cheated from. Of course it will match because basically he stole the idea. The professor tallied both the papers and figured that out within seconds.
CONSEQUENCES:
Every university in US has very strong policy about Cheating and Plagiarism:
1. He might be expelled from the University. In that case he loses his F1 status and would have to leave US.
2. He might be suspended for a semester from the university. Again loses his status but this might take some time a month or so.
3. Would be on probation for couple of month.
4. Might have to do some community work or do some research paper as a punishment.
5. Warning only.

I think everybody can handle options #3,4 and 5 in this circumstances, but is there a way he can stay in the US legally in the case of option 1 and 2.
As we all know, he did a mistake ( not so big for Nepalese but quite unacceptable in the US) so instead of accusing him or passing aweful comments, Please give him some suggestion so that he could use it. Please let him use some advise from the Nepalese community that might be helpful for his life time. Thank you for reading this.

Bro, ask ur friend to apologise the professor, Well I don't think ur option 1 is obvious..

There was a case of plagiarism of one of the students ( not a Nepali though) in a reputed University, and he was expelled from the university. After that, that guy pleaded  one of his professors (who was close to the guy) to write a letter on behalf of forgiving the guy. The professor (who also teaches in my University)  said that she wrote something like, "plagiarism is ok in his country, his country doesn't have strict rules of plagiarism, even renowned scholors do that as a medium of elaborating their ideas......so, please forgive the guy since he is a good student and might not have thought serious about the consequences of plagiarism".

thanks for your suggestion bro,
Plagiarism and Cheating are alike and different in many ways. He did apologize to the professor but that didn't help.Your idea of asking other professor for letter is good. will have to try one of those. Thanks again, Keep the thread live.
