Hello friends,

I am a Bhutanese rufugee living in USA for 4 years. As a refugee I do not have passport of any country but I have green card. I want to hear from any sajha experts or the person like my statatus that whether I can visit Nepal or not. I am extremely missing Nepal so I want to visit for few months. Could you guys please help me what are the procedures to go to Nepal. Your help will be highly appreciated.

punte ji, little off the topic, but would you mind sharing the situation in Bhutan right now? The king seems to be progressive mind, but why is still the refugee issue lingering there? Nepal always wishes the best for its neighbor, specially Bhutan, and we hope the situation gets resolved soon.

Kiddo bro,

I am sorry that I do not have recent information about Bhutan. Truthly speaking, I do not have any intimacy with Bhutan, I do not think I have to clearify it. I just want to visit Nepal where we got shelter for many years and we still have some relatives. One more reason is I just want to take a rest from this machine life of USA. Most of the Bhutanese people are not educated like other people of Nepal and they do not have descent job in USA and I am also among them. Because of that hard job I am so tired and want to visit Nepal.....

Apply for a RP that's valid for 2 years and go from there.

As an aside, I kinda feel bad for Bhutanese that've been relocated in my neck of the woods. The US govt. brought 'em and have settled them in crappy neighborhood in/around East Oakland - one of the most dangerous neighborhoods in the US. Since a majority of them don't have skills and/or education, they're forced to work menial jobs whilst completely lacking proper guidance etc.

Since you already have a green card from your refugee status, you only need either a re-entry permit valid for 2 years or refugee travel document valid for 1 year. You can visit nepal with no problem unlike visiting Bhutan. The only thing you need to be aware is that, some countries do not recognize refugee travel document on transit like UAE; So, you need to avoid transit in Dubai. You can go via Qatar, Singapore, London, France, Germany with your RTD or Re-entry permit with no problem. To be 100% sure, get your ticket and confirm with the consulate of the transit country whether you can travel via their airport with your travel documents. Have fun in Nepal.

Punte Damai,

Eventhough I cant help you on the main thread topic (sorry about that), I can definitely tell you that you have decent English and you seem to be educated. Don't under-estimate yourself. YOu are far better than others wannabe "Nepali-Americans" punk (at least the way they response/communicate in sajha thread).

Just utilise your status, get further education and in the meanwhile do some supporting job. Most of the  people are on the same boat despite of relgion/nationality/status.

~ GoodLuck for your Nepal visit

Btw as a Nepali I wanna say thqt I never look at bhutanis as refugees in Nepal.they should have been heartly welcomed by our incomletent govt who gives citizenships to indian and tibetans for few thousands ruppes under the table. Bhutanis are in trouble for being Nepali in Bhutan and still with generations of gap bhutanis hold genuine intamacy with. Nepal. No matter what Nepali , Indian and bhutani govt would consider u but I and lots of Nepalis will always consider and love u like our own.

I knew this was gonna come. >>who gives citizenships to indian and tibetans for few thousands ruppes under the table<< @ pshrestha78: Please try and change your mindset to see things on a different perspective.

So a yadav, jha, mishra, gupta etc ..who are nepali, need to prove they are not bhaiya, bihari, bhele, dhoti, murshiya, khali-shishi..etc..and a refugee; nepali just being his language: was brought to US (other countries) whilst they stated that Nepal government can't take care of them on humanitarian grounds is supported devaluing our govt (right or wrong can be a different debate all together) ...Why do you think they came to Nepal? Why do you think India not keep them? Going by your thoughts, indian govt has given lot of citizenship to nepalese residing in eastern region of india..

No offense to punte..as far as i can see, his soul visit to nepal is to meet his family/relative...I would suggest, if you can, wait for you citizenship Or talk to an immigration lawyer. Better safe than sorry...

I knew this was gonna come too. I never said jhas , Yadavas , etc etc have to prove anything. however, there are lots of non Nepalis who have obtained Nepali citizenship for few thousand dollars with the help of crooked Nepali officers and politicians. Bhutanis unlike the other groups are true Nepalis who were forced to move out of Bhutan for being Nepali. They have Nepali ancestry and should've been treated better than what they were treated in the camp of jhapa.

Off Topic:

I have met very few Bhutanese refugees living in USA but whomever I have met are very polite and well behaved. They like to call themselves Nepalese rather than Bhutanese. They like to wear traditional Nepalese dresses and follow cultural things more than any Nepalese. Now I conduced the following things from the words of punte_damali.

  • They love Nepal than any average so-called Nepalese.
  • They have better English than any average so-called Nepalese. (Still they don’t show off)
  • They are hardworking and honest. (They are not like those who work in sub-way and like to say they work in an accounting firm)

I respect you guys.

 Punte Damai bro,
I know one Bhutanese who recently went Nepal to get married and came back with out any hassle. All she did was apply for travel documents and she was set. I am not aware of the exact procedures and documentation but I believe it cost something around $500-$1000 to apply for the documents. Good luck bro and let us how it goes!!
Folks, lets not argue about the issue. The main reason why they were refugees was "THEY WERE NEPALI AND THEY WANTED TO LIVE LIKE A NEPALI IN BHUTAN". There is no difference between them and us. If US, CANADA, AUSTRALIA govt. kicks us out some day, we will be exactly like in the same scenario. At that point, I don't think you would appreciate somebody saying your not a Nepali.

Thank you so much, P Shrestha, Kiddo, duderino, Unicorn, It guy and busenitz. Thank you so much for your precious suggestion and your sympathy to all Bhutanese like me. And always want same phylanthropy from you to us. I do not want to comment and argue about the government of Nepal and politicians. It would be great honour to our grand parents if they were settled in Nepal but the politicians could not accept us as a human. And I do not want to argue on the case that governemet gave citizenship to Indian  with few amount (under table). I just have grievance that we were treated as animal and we do not have formal nationality even if we claim ourselves as a Nepali because our origion is Nepal no matter where our ancestor moved to. And I belive the people of the entire world are same no matter where they belong to.

Lastly, thanks all for your valueable input. Lets live together and share our pain and gain together as a human.
