Hello fellow Nepalis!

I have been pondering about this question for a long time. I am a gay man in my early twenties and have been studying in the US for a while. I really want to go back to Nepal after I get done with my studies and work there, but the fear of having to get married and  the discrimination that I'll face if I do come out discourages me to even consider going back.

Thus, I pose this question to everyone here...what do you think about being a sexual minority in Nepal/Nepalese society?

Dont worry in new nepal people like you (minorities) have more rights and power than normal people .
May be soon nepal will pass law for gay marriage also.

Nepalese are never gay!! We have higadas, a woman traped in mans body. One of then is a samsad i believe.

A gay rights group in Nepal is staging South Asia's first tournament for gay athletes, in the capital Kathmandu.

Organisers said more than 300 gay, bisexual and transgender athletes from 30 countries were registered to compete in the three-day event.

The festival aims to promote the rights of sexual minorities.

Homosexuality is illegal in many South Asian countries, including Bangladesh and Pakistan where those convicted can face life imprisonment.

In Nepal, homosexuality was decriminalised in 2007 with the end of the monarchy. Supreme Court judges have instructed the new democratic government to ensure equal rights for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) people.

'Spirit of sport'

But activists say the Nepali LGBTI community still suffers from discrimination and abuse.

They want the government to allow individuals who identify themselves as transgender to be able to do so on official documents.

The tournament is being organised by Blue Diamond Society, a Nepali gay rights group, with the support of foreign embassies.

Blue Diamond said it would "prove that sexual and gender minority individuals are as much a member of society as anyone else and they can also take part in mainstream activities such as sports, contrary to popular misconceptions".

The event was officially opened by Greg Louganis, a former US Olympic diving champion who is openly gay. In his opening address, he urged participants to "keep up the spirit of sport".

Organisers said athletes from Bangladesh and Pakistan had registered to take part despite the dangers, alongside around 250 Nepalis and 100 from other countries including Russia and Denmark.

The athletes will not be representing their countries, but will be participating as individuals in events including athletics, football, badminton and basketball.

 I am not much into gay bars/prides and stuff like that. But I've met a LOT of Nepalis who are completely disgusted by homosexuality. It's hard to believe but there are tons of gay/lesbian folks all over Nepal and they hide it by getting married and having kids; it's sad that such people (especially men) still continue to have sex with other man secretly. 

I am just going on ranting here but given the prospects of marriage with a woman, I am highly discouraged to even consider going back. It's devastating for me because I do want to go back but... :(

Don't let anyone ever tell you how to live your life (although this sounds very similar to what you suggested to the other guy who started the other thread, I feel the need to repeat it because it can't be emphasized enough)

Most Nepali conservatives will not understand the fact that your sexual identity is not a choice, and it is what you were born with, so it is useless arguing with them and trying to get them to be on the same page as you. However, please know that there are a lot of knowledgable people like us who get it, and support you.

Since you really can't change the mentality of people back home (and even some people here), I'd advise you look into the gay asylum visa (given you want to stay here for a while). 

Also, if you ever need to talk to anyone about any of this, feel free to shoot me a message on sajha. Although I am a girl, I'm all ears if you need to talk to someone. Fifty years ago, these conservatives were arguing that racism was okay. A while ago, they were debating whether women should vote. So, things are going to change and we need people like you to stay strong so that we can bring about that change. I know it is a lot of responsibility on your shoulders, but I can't explain how much the future generation is going to appreciate that.

 Don't go to Nepal (boy/girl/?). I think calling gay is discrimination.

Gays are men who are attracted to other men. You're confusing gay with transsexuals. Besides, transsexuals can be addressed as she or he depending on whether they've had male to female or female to male transition.

And how is using the word gay discriminatory? I fail to grasp your logic.

I think there seems to be a confusion between gender and sexual orientation here.

Enigma bro, you'll be a subject to a lot of ridicule and back biting if you go back to Nepal. Our societal views are still very conservative. I have men in my family who stayed unmarried all their lives, I wonder sometimes if they are gay. If you go back to Nepal you'll probably have to live in the closet forever or join a political party or be an activist of some sort. I don't think our society lends itself to a normal 'day to day' lifestyle that gay individuals in America enjoy.
I think you'd be better off if you were to seek an American companion and take that route. You won't feel like a freak. Not that I'm calling you a freak, but idiots in Nepal will label you as such. Political rights and social structure are not in lock-step back in Nepal

Should you decide to go home, there's a group of gays in Nepal called Blue Diamond Society. Isn't Nepal known as the capital for gay marriages recently? I know people won't be really accepting but I don't think it's an uncommon norm anymore, especially in Katmandu that's more vibrant and diverse. 

You're better off here, though. Move to San Francisco or West Palm Beach, FL.
