How many of you eat beef in America. Its been almost a year since I came to America, I haven't intentionally eaten it and I don't feel like it. Although, I have been tricked a couple of times but other than I don't. Do you?

@Kaji Sahab:
Can you cite the source of the words from puran or wherever you are claiming it comes from that says you cannot eat beef.  Why then is there nothing about not allowing to eat hatti ko masu (ganesh) and badel ko masu (Baraha Awatar) etc. We sure do Ganesh Puja dont we?  why is Hinduism hand picking animals and saying it is okay to eat this meat but not that? That is illogical, given that the main source of milk in different countries around the world is cow, do you think they would agree to the point you are making which says you are eating your mother’s meat if you are eating beef?  Cow is our national animal which I understand then why are some restaurants in thamel, jhamel etc serving beefy goodies even with the law in place? I have had several beef entrée in Nepal so what of this law? Like your religion it applies to some and not other I guess.  Americans don’t eat bald eagle cause it is not edible and is on the rare species list. I can always eat beef wherever I want, I don’t want to eat it in my parents house cause it’s their house rule that prohibits beef from entering the house. I have had lot of beefy goodies when we have been out to eat in restaurants so don’t give me your Cha tagat bull shit.

My point: I am not a religious person and I don't really care who eats what. :)

 @ Kaji:

I will keep your suggestion in mind.  Elephant and blue whale, eh?  Only problem is both of those species are hard to find at my local grocery store.  Plus, there are not many elephants in this world and the blue whale actually might be endangered, no?

But more to your point: please enlighten me, since you present yourself as purveyor of Hinduism insights,  where and how - in Puran and Veda - is it written that eating beef is forbidden?

Chaurey bro
Rather than asking me 1000 more questions, you should read carefully what I have posted. If you claim to be someone, but lack the very foundation of it….what good of that person are you??? If a renowned doctor tells his patients to forsake alcoholism, yet he is head over heels in that matter……what good of a good is he????? Hindu ho bhane beef khadaina haina bhane tyo hindu nai haina…….

That is illogical, given that the main source of milk in different countries around the world is cow, do you think they would agree to the point you are making which says you are eating your mother’s meat if you are eating beef?
Okay, are you from Nepal??? Were you born and raised in Nepal?? Were your parents nepali??? Were you born in a hindu family??......if yes….then why you being so naïve?? Have I said that westerners cant eat beef?? Anyone but hindus can eat beef. Illogical?? What is your logic behind celebrating dashain? What is your logic about worshipping stones as god??? Naramro kura matra kjone ho bhane sayau kura hunchhan……sabai kura logic nai hune bhaye ta atheist bana na bro…kurai sakiyo ni…….Jesus kasari janmeko taha hola.tyo pani illogic bhayena ra bhanya…….khai tai pani America jasto desh ma tehi kura thik ho bhanchhan.
Cow is our national animal which I understand then why are some restaurants in thamel, jhamel etc serving beefy goodies even with the law in place? I have had several beef entrée in Nepal so what of this law?
Aba question chhaina cow nai kina national animal, buffalo banaya hunna bhanera??? Rahyo kura law ko, as far as I know, beef products are available in luxury hotels in Nepal and they are imported. Cow slaughter and consumption is strictly forbidden by the law. Non nepalis can consume. It would not be practical for the police to go and raid each and every table and inspect whether any beef is contained in the entrée. The law aims at discouraging beef consumption by making slaughtering of cow illegal at the first place. Aba kohi luki luki khanchha bhane ta kasko bau ko k lagchha?? Nepali haru casino jana illegal ho tara pani luki luki janchhan…..aba 100% ta rokna sakidaina ni……..
La hera gai kata haru lai police le jakeko
http://www.ekantipur.com/2010/05/05/national/around-a-dozen-cow-slaughterers-detained/313693/
Americans don’t eat bald eagle cause it is not edible and is on the rare species list
America bhanne bittikai niyam ko kura aayo haina ta?? Ani Nepal ma chhai niyam follow garna paradaina??? Nepali le beef khanu ta morally wrong matra haina illegal pani ho Nepal ma.
I can always eat beef wherever I want, I don’t want to eat it in my parents house cause it’s their house rule that prohibits beef from entering the house. I have had lot of beefy goodies when we have been out to eat in restaurants so don’t give me your Cha tagat bull shit.
Okay I admire the respect for your parents. When you have your own house and your parents come over for bbq, are you gonna have some juicy steak?? Aba tyo ta timro ghar ho ni bro….i am sure your parents wont say anything…..they can have something else and you can enjoy your delicious juicy steak….once more…..tagat chha bhane teso gara………if you are firm on your conviction, you do not have to worry about what others will say!! Mohi magne ani dhungro lukaune kura bhayo ni
Can you cite the source of the words from puran or wherever you are claiming it comes from that says you cannot eat beef
To be honest, I have not read the whole puran, and I doubt a very few have. I told you already that it takes extensive devotion and learning. One cant assume to know everything about a religion by studying a few chapters. Jindagi ma dherai kura haru hunchhan joon chhai suneko bhar ma nai biswas garinchhan. Maile pani cultural event haru attend garda suneko ho yi kura haru……I cant exactly quote you the verse and chapter but I can for sure say that I heard it for people who devoted their entire life to the study of this religion. Kati kura haru life ma afu bhanda janne ani thulo bada haru ko sunnu parchha. Hareko kura ma “kaha lekheko chha” “quote gara” bhanna mildaina. America ma cite garna sikiyo bhandai ma life ko sabai kura tyo anusar chaldaina bro……bachha ma amma le bhaneko kura yaad chha “ago le polchha nachalnu”…..kati kura haru yestai hunchha joon chhai experience nagari pani follow garna parchha. Sayab teti bela ta bhanenau hola ni “kaha lekheko chha” bhanera??? Dashain manauchhau bhaney……kina tyo jamara ani tika lagauchha?? Its just another red dot on your forehead and some species of grass hanging by your ear……..makes no sense…..
If you are so desperate for citation…..go and read Mahabharat Shantiparv 262.47…..you will find some answers that will satisfy you.
My point is: if you fail to follow the very fundamental core value of something, you are not part of that in anyway.
I don’t care what anyone eats…just don’t falsely claim yourself what you are not

Riten
Thank you for considering my suggestion. I was one adding to your idea of “a big kill vs numerous small kills”. I do not know where you live but you might have a good chance of getting whale meat in japanese grocery stores. You are in luck if you live or move to Alaska.
Also, refer to the above posting for your answer. Could you also enlighten me as to where in Hinduism it is said that beef consumption and cow slaughter is appropriate??

Kaji, you are smart ;-)

I asked you to prove what you said and you respond by telling me to prove what you did not say.

I am not falling for that.

You made the assertion, you back it up.

Just tell us where you read in Puran or Veda that hindus should not eat beef.

If you can, I will stand corrected and thank you for the new knowledge you have imparted upon me.

If you cannot, that's fine too.  Thereupon, we may agree that not eating beef is a social custom that has transpired over centuries rather than a dictum firmly based on scriptures.

That's all.

One should wonder why Nepalese celebrate GAI TIHAR every year? Is it because Nepalese dont have enough holidays ?

well i am also a pure hindu and love to eat beef.i would like to hear frm kaji  about holy cow being one of the fundamentals of hinduism.even swami vivekanenda said that the  prohibition of beef came a lot later in hinduism and had  actually economical reasons which was later amalgamated with hindu legends.
so chill out bro ,its ur karma that matters.you wont be a hindu by observing  pujas, putting tika or celebrating absurd festivals.they are more cultural than religious.and thats manmade.period!

As a hindu, i don't like to eat beef. I have been living in europe for over 10 years but have not eaten beef. It's more of the personal choice than anything else. Most of my hindu friends eat beef and I don't have any problem eating them whatever they like.

One of my muslim friend asked me why I don't eat beef but drink cow milk..? My answer to that question was as a hindu we worship cow as a mother that's why we do drink cow's milk but could not kill cow and eat it's meat.

To answer some crtics' arguments, Dashain and Tihar are two great Hindu festivals. Non-Hindus in Nepal celebrate them because they are government designated holidays just like non-Christians in some shape or form celebrate Christmas recess in the US.
As part of Tihar rituals, Hindus worship Crow, Dog, and Cow. As you have observed by now, Hindus consume none of these animals for food. Hinduism has been around since even before the custom of recording manuscripts became popular. Therefore not every custom or ritual is  dictated in some form of scripts. Just for the sake of argument, if one is a Hindu and deliberately consumes beef, it is as blasphemous as a muslim ingesting pork.
If Hindus do not observe such taboos consistently , who knows one of these days, a devout Hindu might be served a beef delicacy by a foreign host and hell might break loose.

To be honest, I have not read the whole puran, and I doubt a very few have. I told you already that it takes extensive devotion and learning. One cant assume to know everything about a religion by studying a few chapters

For someone who doesn't even have the devotion or knowledge of what his religon is about you sure talk like  you know every little detail about it. If you are against beef eating by a hindu please go learn what your background is and what your foundation is built on first and please give me a logical answer as to why hindus eat PIG/BOAR when infact that is one of the avatars of Vishnu thas supposedly saved the world? I am not convinced by your answer that we eat PIG/BOAR cause we do not worship PIG/BOAR and do puja.

Like i said your law holds no water in Nepal, not only do expensive hotels serve beef there are restaurents in thamel that serve beef entree, as i have said  law in nepal as good as your  belief where it  handpicks people and chooses who it can be imposed on, I have myself being a Nepali citizen asked for beef entree in Thamel and I have been served and there were no altercation after wards. This too i have done multiple times.

okay I admire the respect for your parents.

What does respect have to do with me eating or serving beef?  I respect my parents as much regardless of whether or not I eat beef. If they are not offended by me chowing down a quater pounder in front of them who are you to tell me what i did was disrespectful, my point is stop assuming things like that and stop  interfering in other peoples private matters. Just cause their  reasoning, either religious or personal preference, gets in their way of not eating beef does not necessarily mean i disrespect them by eating beef. I have told you before and I am telling you now "tagat cha" is not an issue, if i want to i will, and if people don't like it then so be it. I am not changing my personal prefrence just cause of your flawed logic of "we are hindu and we should not do it" gets in the way.  Besides I can always go to Ganga river and rid of my beef eating sins if i feel like, what a nice religon.

HAHAHA are you for real? harek kura ma cite gara bhanna mildaina? america ma cite garna sikyo bhandai ma sabai kura cite hudaina re wtf? LMAO.... bro ago le polcha bhanne kura ta scientifcally proven nai cha, do you want me to give you some medical websites where they show burn victims? i dont think my mother needed to tell me that ago le polcha.

hinduism must have something somewhere in those holy books that must say what you are saying? you are either too lazy or just don't give a fk to tell me that.

America bhanne bittikai niyam ko kura aayo haina ta?? Ani Nepal ma chhai niyam follow garna paradaina??? Nepali le beef khanu ta morally wrong matra haina illegal pani ho Nepal ma.

You are the one who brought up why American people don't eat bald eagle even though it is their national bird in your earlier post. What niyam kanun nonsense are you talking about? Where have i said it is against the law in america to eat bald eagle? you completely missed my point, my point was that if the bald eagle was edible i am sure people would go out and hunt for it. besides bald eagle is on the rare species list anyway even if it had been edible i am sure people wouldn't have eaten it.

Happy Soul: I completely agree with you and I respect the fact you don't eat beef cause it's your personal choice.

Anyhow why do Newars eat ranga  whereas chetrri/baun don't? isn't that more of a cultural/personal choice than religious choice? isn't that what beef eating should be too? matter of choice rather than a law and religon forbidding it especially now that Nepal is a so called secular state?

really??? I think this is will be my answer???? tested over a poor mans hunger? tested over a starving innocent child ? Over a mothers dilemma to see her dead children due to a minor health issue? all the Killing and instability is just a test..... So God has become so ruthless towards Nepal that they will test us for generations and then all of a sudden Nepal will be the most richest country in the world? So your explanation is that we take it up our arses because this is all a damn TEST to see if we qualify , but for WHAT?.....Go to Nepal news and tell everyone suffering That GOD IS TESTING US ALL.  Oh my God my eyes just got opened.......God is testing me and my faith, so Im not gonna feel sad for my country and all the poor people BECAUSE its only a TEST.  Thank God you lifted all my worries, and here I am feeling sad. NOT ANYMORE....thank you from now on ill t stop complaining or i will fail the test and so on......Im not interfering...I dont want to go to hell

First of all, here's some basic info about cows:

1.       Cows maintain a spiritual environment in a family; it means less stress, prevalence of love, care, and understanding amongst family members. It has been proved and verified that a person who stays in the vicinity of a cow for 30 minutes everyday will effortlessly and unknowingly develop positive attitude, intellect and righteousness; in a research, results were seen clearly in a period of two to six months.
2.       Cows help maintain a healthy environment. If a person has problems of blood pressure and sugar levels, he should rub his hands on the cow’s hump for 15 minutes everyday. In six months time, the patient will be cured completely. It is not clear how many other diseases can be cured this way; more research is underway.
3.       Cow’s dung and urine have numerous medicinal values; a 90 year old man testifies the fact saying that he had never took any medicines in his entire life other than cow’s urine for all diseases. At 90, he’s as healthy as a youth.
4.       Cow dung produced by just two cows is sufficient to produce enough bio-gas for cooking, and lighting a 60 W lamp for a four-member family. The dung-slurry which is a waste from the fermentation serves as a rich natural manure for farming.
5.       A family that gets to drink enough cows’ milk will not suffer from malnutrition; cow’s milk and its products have high nutritional value. The milk can also be sold for additional income.
6.       The Vedas regard a cow’s body as the dwelling of the Gods and Goddesses in subtle form; since I cannot provide proof of this, I shall not debate on it. Based on the above facts, I will just conclude that a cow does hold positive energy in her.

I am not surprised that many of us eat beef. The reason is we were probably never taught anything about it; the school doesn't teach us the supreme knowledge of our religion, and even parents themselves, are unaware of the science behind our religious practices. Consequently, the youths of the 21st century have simply begun questioning the validity of those practices. Now, the questions arises : Do we try to dig into the truth of these practices or do we simply just ignore it based on its lack of harmony with the teachings of modern science? To choose the latter would be a big blunder. To those, who question the validity of our Vedas, let me explain that Vedas talk about Quantum Physics since time immemorial, whereas science has just begun to explore it. Now scientists are beginning to realize that matter and energy are inter-convertible, and that what is gross/physical is simply the manifestation of the subtle energy. The Vedas corroborated this truth thousands of years ago when they said that everything that we see around us is a manifestation of the subtle consciousness (energy) which pervades everywhere.

The six facts about cows that I have pointed above have been thoroughly researched to be true. For most who still doubt it, nothing more can be said. You will have to change your mental inclination; if you're waiting for a westener to research on it and support the fact, that may never happen , because they would never want to quit eating meat.

Lastly, for those who are asking for quotes from Puranas, it's not difficult to find it, if you really want to discover the truth. It will be very hard to convince those who close their eyes and say that the sun doesn't exist. Again, it is always beneficial for your spiritual progress to stop eating meat. The effects of meat on your subtle "sookshma" and "karan sharir" which includes your "man and buddhi" is  an entirely different topic. But if there's any one out there who have even a least desire and inclination towards righteousness, intellect, love, and self-upliftment, you sould not kill or eat cow's meat. Remember, human life is a segment of the entire evolutionary system whereby we have come upto this stage through gradual development from the lower levels of existence: from microbes, through plants, through animals, and finally a human body. Our next level of evolution should be Godhood or divinity. Our next level should be towards becoming Buddha, Ramakrishna Paramhamsa, Vivekananda, and so on, and not fall back into lower levels of animal consciousness; and rising higher in these levels of consciousness comes through sacrifice, selflessness, service to all, and righteousness.

Very insightful but you are beating around the bush and yet i fail to understand it all. We are not discussing the validity of what the vedas present, but questioning how beef eating is considered to be downright taboo in our culture.

i am not sure where you came up with your first point that people who live in the vicinity of cow brings positive energy, again to me that is just an assumption much like your second point regarding cure for blood pressure, this is the first time i have heard of such remedy.

My question is how radical hindus who think that by not eating beef and doing bhagwan bhakti all day makes them better, special and purer than someone who is a hindu or born into a family that eats beef? what is the logic? i have time and again questioned where this imfamous rule is cited in the holy books.  this type of belief system of not eating beef, at least to me, resonates the belief that  brahmins are purer in form than the other caste just cause they are born into one.

Ok let me pose another question do you consider the Hare ram hare krishna white/black/brown race to be hindus as well?
