Does anybody have an estimate of the number of people of Nepali origin living in the US? 

i got this info from the nrn website provided by a sajha pal. i forgot the link. last time when i checked it was 135,000 but recent influx of bhutanese refugees and students, that number might have gone up and i just provided an approximate number.

understand one thing, migration to US started in th mid-1990's while to UK, we have 200 yrs of history together.

and just for ur GK, Nepal opened its door to the foreign nations during 1950's only.

Most of the seniors from my school went to study in America around 1980s when I was still in school, so your information about people migrating to US in 1990s is incorrect and also the influx of students to UK started around 2000 and mass exodus of Gurkhas happened recently i.e. since 2005 (before that everyone had to return to Nepal after serving for certain number of years).

As far as I can remember from 12 years back, there were around 20k Nepalese in UK and you could hardly find any nepalese here while 7 out 10 people used to go to America for studies at that time which I think holds true now as well, ignore the DV Lottery.

Your figure may be right but it surely accounts for people living there legally.

superbatmam - just because ur handful seniors took to US doesn't mean they represent 1/2 of nepal. there are still plenty of us back home who doesn't know what and where the heck is US or any other developed countries? ever been to remote areas or visited villiages and sat down to talk with the villagers over a cup of tea. do that and u will change ur view about nepalese migration. do u know even know Nepal is mostly rural?? only privileged ones i.e. with enough wealth goes to US or UK etc. education matters but u need money to pay tuition and survive. and in a poor nation like Nepal with 31% living under poverty, do u think most will make to US? i don't think so. like i said, the number may be not exact but close. check the link above and figure.

According to the 1990 U.S. Census, there were 2,616 Americans with Nepalese ancestry.
The current estimation of population of Nepalese Americans is around 110,616 (got the info from Wiki (not the most reliable source on the web).

Here's a 2000 Census, which ironically claims the Nepali population as 11715 only. The next census is due in 2010. Wait until then for the true fact and figures.

As Sajha has been a common platform for Nepalese in the US and overseas, it should also initiate an application or a registration (for free please!) where Nepalese can register themselves with minimal information. The data should be limited to Name, Age group (no DOB to protect against internet fraud), City and State, profession category and residence in the US since.

The 2010 census of US Government will indeed give us some data but it may or may not be accurate. Therefore, it is high time we have this figured out through ourselves.

Data will be extremely useful in terms of social networking, campaigning for Local Nepali Community Center across the US based on the population density, getting government grant and support to establish temples and shrines, targetting Nepali population at large in terms of access to health care, education, immigration assistance, employment support and job listings. Additionally, the Nepali Organisations spread across the US can use the data to plan and generate economic upliftment programmes for our community through skill development trainings, language trainings, administrative support, Nepali Language Classes for American Nepalese children, organisation Nepalese Trade Fairs etc.

We, the users, can take up some of our time and spread the word to our community. Apart from registering on Sajha site, we can also persuade others through providing links to the registration form at Facebook, Myspace, Linkedin etc.

Though your intentions are good, I don't think it is remotely possible. The final number will be inflated or a complete bogus. How do u avoid people from registering twice( or 10 times in our case)?.....that is the million $ question. Sajha has not been able to stop people coming out with multiple names, how can they collect an accurate (or appro.) data? People from Nepal will blot the size of the database with multiple entrees for political purposes. Remember, everything has and ends with politics with Nepalis.

Most states have Nepali associations and I wonder if these associations can each give us some estimate. I think to get an exact number we will probably have to contact somebody at INS but I don't know who...:)  Putting a registration on sajha will certainly create a biased number - I know many nepali people who don't come to sajha or would not like to participate on sajha for whatever reason.

The Nepali Associations across the US do not have this data, presumed as it is unavailable on their websites.

Santosh jee, if thats from the site mysansar then its fake. Communists have a proven track record of faking the data since the old Soviet days.

Mysansar was probably gathering stats on, how many innocent people did they killed in what year, and renamed the stats differently to make some do in the process...
