Some people may not realise the significance of this election on the future course of Nepali politics.

If Pradip Paudel becomes president of NSU today, that will be a massive blow to the supporters of ceremonial monarchy of Nepali congress party. And eventually it will pave way for the mother party to become pro-republic.

Until the direct enchroachment of Nepali Congress party over NSU continues, i don't think it will make a huge difference who wins this election. Didn't you see how Gagan Thapa and Guru Ghimire were sacked for chanting slogan against royals few years back even though they were elected from general convention?

Makar Tantra ! you are absolutely right. May be thats the reason Gagan was not interested that much becasue he might hve wanted to avoid the second time sack by girija and company.

I don't think it will be as easy this time around. That time Guru Ghimire's committee was already on the extended tenure. The very fact that Pradip Paudel wins (assuming that he does) despite going head on with the Nepali congress establishment, it won't be easy for Girija to sack them that easily, especially when they also need NSU cadres for constituent assembly elections soon and media being on Pradip Paudel's side.

The republican front of NC will get a great boost from this if Pradip Paudel wins and it will help them campaign with great confidence in maha-samiti meeting or General convention.

I agree. However, i am not confident how much Pradeep Poudel is committed towards republic agenda. Could it be just drama from GP Koirala to avoid candidacy of Gagan Thapa?

As far as I know, Gagan Thapa and Pradip Paudel have always been on the same side of countless NSU feuds in recent years. They have both campaigned for republic agenda from the very beginning and their friendship dates back to school days in Sidhdarth Vanasthali.

It is true that the NC establishment sees Pradip Paudel as less of a threat compared to Gagan Thapa due to his huge public support and media interest. But, I can assure you that the supporters of ceremonial monarchy are having nightmares tonight seeing Pradip Paudel victorious in this election.

Poudel elected NSU president

Pradeep Poudel has been elected as president of Nepal Students Union (NSU) at the Tenth Convention of the student organisation held in Chitwan.

The results of election held on Friday came out on Saturday morning. Poudel, who is the current vice president of Congress' student wing, bagged 830 votes of the 1500 votes that were cast.

His nearest rival Bikash Koirala bagged 402 votes followed by Badri Pandey. Six candidates were in the fray for the post of presidency.

Poudel is said to represent the republican camp within the student organisation and had been backed by influential student leader Gagan Thapa.

Meanwhile, four representatives have been elected at the central committee from eastern region. Six were elected from central region; four from western region; four from mid-western region; and three from far western region. Likewise, four women members have also been elected. One each has been elected from technical field and overseas department.

After becoming elected, Poudel said he is committed to building a new Nepal by working to end monarchy through Constituent Assembly and consolidating democracy. nepalnews.com sd May 26 07
