Hello Nakkali, I would like to suggest you to format your Hard-drive. Do ya have recovery disks? Shut down your PC, then open your window while doing that insert your recovery disk (that disk comes with your PC, when you buy computer), and follow the setting method,,,,,,,wait until your PC delete the hard disk and copy the new programs from disk. It takes more than an hour,,,,,,,,,,, After compilation of formatting, your PC work as like new. And you can add antivirus software, something like McAfee or Norton. I guess you have port problem, whether you delete your modem ......... otherwise should connect to network , if you followed through the appropriate way.........

Thanks Nakkali for starting this thread..I got a chance to ask some questions to sajha computer experts too. My problem is I have two Win98 operating in my system , I accidently removed system files from the first one resulting into complete failure in loadin all the programmes ( a screen with my wall paper n nothing more, not a single Icon)...then I installed windows98 again..now the system works perfectly like it was before ...but I am worried abt overlaping files..do they posses any threat to my computer in the near future??? as the files of both the systems r there they r taking unnecessary space in my hard disk..can anyone suggest me how to remove the ones from the previous intallation. Secondly I am posting my hijackthis log file in my next posting....I want some experts to identify the spies n viruses as I am afraid of deleting them by myself due to my insufficient knowledge....ur help is Higly appreciated. THNKSSS

Dear nepali_kanchi: My two cents--- Your problem description is too vague. There can be many different reasons why you can't get into the network. If your network administrators have not blocked you from accessing the network (because you've said you got some access violation notice from the IT department), then most likely, your computer is not set up right. You said you just installed a new anti-virus... Does it have a built in firewall... If it does and is enabled, maybe you are on the network but your firewall is blocking all outgoing connections. Also, make sure your Network Adapter driver is currently installed on the computer. The other place to check would be your TCP/IP settings under Network Connections. If your school/library allows plug-and-play internet connections, then you'll probably want to make sure the TCP/IP settings are configured to use the DHCP (Check where it says "Detect automatically" or somthign like that). If that still doesn't fix it, then please describe your problem in a bit more detail such as: 1. Your operating system 2. Output of the "ipconfig" command (type 'ipconfig' and hit enter on the black command prompt window) 3. Output of your "netstat a/" command 4. Output of your "ping .edu" command 5. Your TCP/IP settings 6. Go to-->Control Panel-->System-->Hardware-->Device Manager On the window that appears, make sure there is no yellow exclamation mark by the 'Network apdpter' section. So as I said, there might be a number of various reasons why can't get onto the network... I would say your best bet is for you to let shaq have a look at it and he'll fix it all for you while you sit back and read/write more kurakani threads on your roomie's computer. Lemme know if you need some influence to get shaq to work on it... :p But if you have backed up your crucial data (such as all the love letters received so far, which you are yet to respond to), and have the re-installation disks, then like gallant said, the ultimate solution is to rebuild the machine.... first back up your data (eg, copy your files onto a CD), then put the Windows reinstallation CD in, then turn the computer off, then turn it back on, and select to boot from the CD and follow the instructions that will appear on a set of blue screens...When asked, you will want to remove the existing system and reinstall all over. Good day! Echoes

Dear sense-- I would strongly suggest you to upgrade. It will get only harder for you to get support for outdated operating systems like Win98. As to your question--- Technically, it is possible to have more than one OS on a modern personal computer. However, each installation of the OS should have its own set of files. Most commonly, different logical partitions are created of the hard disk and each OS is assigned at least one (primary) partition, which is where it stores its system files. You probably have two different partitions of your hard disk too (Are there 'C:' and 'D:', or something else?). So, if your first installation of Win98 used C: as its primary partition, then the second installation must have used D:. Now, why do you have two operating systems on your computer that are both Win98? Usually, when people have two operating systems, they are two different OSes...such as Windows and Linux or Windows 2000 and Win XP, etc. I know some enterprise production systems use two identical OSes on the same machine for fail-over recovery, but from what you've said, it doesn't look like that's what your computer is being used for. So, certainly, getting rid of one of the two Win98s is the way to go. Now, how should you go about doing that? First of all, back up all your critical data from your computer. If you have a CD burner, put it all on the CDs, else if you have a fine network connection, FTP it to a server, or worst case, get a Gmail account (ask if you need an invitation) and compose a messages to yourself sending all your files as attachments. Then, boot up with the version of Win98 that you want to keep. Then completely reformat the other partition. If there are C: and D:, then you'll be able to format only one because it probably won't let you format the drive you're currently on, which is a good thign! You should simply be able to right click on the drive and say 'Format'. It will then create a fresh new FAT32 file system for you that you can use for data storage from your kept version of Win98. That should be all the work involved.... At least in theory. I'm sure people will add, if I've missed anything. Again, you might want to consider upgrading from Win98. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ As for your dump of the HijackThis log file, I do not see anything malicious going on...The processes that are reported as running look all legitimate. I think you are fine. One of the very few nice things about sticking to Win98 or prior is that most of the modern warms/viruses are so sophisticated that they don't even consider messing with old systems like Win98 worthwhile :-) So in that sense, you are quite a bit lagged behind in terms of keeping up with the technology, but then you haven't had to deal with its darker side--the endless series of security vulnerabilities that the innovations have brought along--and you havne't had to constantly learn the new shit all the time either, which, too, never seems to end. Anyways... hope it was helpful, please do let us know if things do/don?t work. Maybe the so called 'geeks' should start using a different forum in Kurakani for technology talks...just so that the rest of the folks aren't annoyed. Good day! Echoes.

Nakkali kanchi, Here is a small checklist you can try: Check for physical connectivity. Is the network cable plugged in securely on the wall as well as the back of your computer? Unplug and reconnect securely. Does the little LED light up when you machine is on? Yes/No. If yes, half your battle is over. If not, uh oh, possible network cable or network port issue. Try another cable/network port. [It could also be network card failure, call for warranty support from hardware vendor]. Assuming you are running Windows XP, on the tray near the bottom right of your screen where you see the time display, do you see the network icon? [The network icon is a picture of two computers] If visible, does the network icon display a red X on it? If so, go to Start, control Panel, Network and Dialup connections, double click to open, Right click on Local Area Connection and Select Enable. The network tray icon should light up and the red X should disappear. If the above is not true, then it could indicate other problems. Could you please provide more information on the behaviour your machine presently exhibits? Its very difficult to diagnose the probable cause of the problem afflicting your computer and advocate a possible solution without clearer and more detailed information from you. However, a line in your posting "network violation error" caught my eye. This could indicate that your campus IT dept. has blocked your machine from connecting to the network. To check for this, if your computer is running Windows XP, right click on the taskbar (the grey bar at the bottom of the screen), and on the menu that appears, select Task Manager. On the window that appears, click on the Processes tab (below the Menu bar that says File, Options, View etc.). On the list of processes currently running, check if you see ALG.EXE and Launch32.exe. If you see ALG.EXE as a running process, it indicates that your machine is functioning as a gateway, used by malicious programs on your machine to attack other computers. One result would be a huge amount of network traffic being generated by your machine and flooding your local network. Causing your campus network administrator to block network access for your machine. If you see Launch32.exe on the proccesses, it indicates possible spyware/adware infestation. To my knowledge, almost all commercially available anti-virus programs are ineffective against spyware/adware. [It takes a firewall to block unauthorized traffic to/from your machine. The McAfee security suite has this feature, but not the Symantec Anti-virus you have installed.] Possible solutions: Given your search for help here, I take it you haven't the skills to shut down Services on your machine. If you want to take a chance, here is what you can do: Change the paramenters of the local gateway service [from Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Services, then select Local Gateway Services, right click on it, select Properties] so that its properties are changed to Disabled. However, you must login as a user with Local Administrator rights to do this. If in doubt, refrain from attempting this. If your roomate's computer has a CD-writer and you have access to a blank CD, you can download Adaware and burn it to a blank CD. Then use that CD to install Adaware on your computer, proceed to irun that program to clean out your machine. Here is where you can get Adaware. http://www.download.com/3000-2144-10045910.html?part=69274&subj=dlpage&tag=button If the above two things doesn't do the trick, you really are up the creek without a paddle. The ultimate is to delete the HD's existing partition, re-create the partion, re-format the HD then re-install the OS and all the applications. Then ask your campus IT dept. to re-connect you to the network. Of course, first backup your data on CDs before doing any of the above. Good luck.

For the person having problems with Windows98. Windows 98, or any other version of Windows, does not automatically create additional partitions for every installation attempt. It takes explicit user intervention to create multiple partitions on a hard disk. In the case of Windows 98, the default destination for the installation is the "Windows" directory on partition one of the first hard drive and is assigned the drive letter "C:" Regardless of how many times Win 98/ME is installed, it always defaults to this specific location. It does not change. Solution to the corrupted OS quandry: Create a Win98 startup disk first. To do so, have a blank floppy disk and the Win 98 CD handy. Then, go to: Start, Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, select the Startup Disk tab, and click on the Create disk button. Follow the prompts to insert the floppy disk (and the Win98 CD if required). After the floppy disk is created, eject it from the drive. As Echoes has so sensibly suggested, Backup your data first, and ensure that you have all necessary restore CD's on hand. When ready, proceed as follows: Insert the newly created Win 98 startup floppy into the floppy drive and restart the machine. You will be prompted to choose from 1. Help 2. Boot with CD-rom support 3. Boot without CD-rom support etc. Using the arrow keys, select Boot with Cd-Rom support, and wait for the prompt to appear. At the A:\> prompt, type in the following command: A:\>fdisk /mbr and press the Enter key. Wait till the prompt appears again. Next type in the following command. A:\>format c: /u and press the Enter key. Ensure there is a space between format and c: as well as the /u, but no space between the 'c' and : sign and same for the / and u character. A message appears warning you of data erasure. Press the Y key to accept. When formatting is complete, a message appears requesting input for Volume label. Press the Enter key. The prompt appears. Insert the Windows 98 CD into the CD-ROM drive, then press Ctrl+Alt+Del keys to reboot. The Windows installation will commence. That should take care of the possibly corrupted boot sector and File Allocation Table and provide a clean installation of the OS.

Sense, A cursory glance of the log file seems to indicate the OS is normal. However, if you want, re-install the OS and, as a first act, download, install and run Adaware right away. And keep updating and running Adaware every few days if your machine sees heavy internet usage. If all else fails, download and use Mozilla Firefox, IE ko jhamala and inherent security risk is over! Also, to the user with network problems: Addendum: If your machine has Windows XP with Service Pack 2, that opens up a whole new can of worms. Well beyond the scope of what can be tackled without expert onsite assistance.

Thanks a lot czar and echoes though things didnt get better last night.. but surprisingly it's working this morning. I just found out that if you get more than 3 violation notices then your computer is disconnected for 24 hrs... I think that was the reason why I couldn't get into the network yesterday cuz i had got 4 violations.. anyways.. it's working now but I still can't run my antivirus software, it says some kind of .dll file is missing.. so I am scanning my computer using online sources.. hope that works.. la ta, I will keep you updated until my problems are fixed.. thanks again, Hope you all have a good day, later, nakkali

See there can be two problems: (2) modem can not connect at all. In this case, don't reformat your computer. Its a waste of time, effort and no guarantee that your problem will be solved. go to various internet sites and read information about such problems. At most remove current driver of the modem (before you remove note down in a piece of paper which model of modem was installed and was working). Did you computer from Dell or Acer or .... they might have telephone based service system. Toll Free numbers are available. Even if your guarantee period expires, I found DELL helps over telephone. I spend 2 hours to connect to DELL's support and talked to 1 hours. They try to help you from scratch, just follow what they ask you. Prepare all CDs that was sent to you at the time you purchased the computer. They will tell what you should do and what you should not do. Reformatting is a solution to dumb, only dumb should do it for each and every problem. Modem does connect is not a big deal, only you need time and passions. If you are tired of doing yourself, and have never tried AOL, then bring AOL disk (Free 1000hours or 2 months) try their CD, it usually works and if it does not work, call them and get free support and they have list of setting for each and every modem, they will tell you which switch has to be clicked and which one needs to set off. Have you ever noticed AOL V9.0 advertisement in TVs, three girls buy a computer and needs to connect to internet. A techie boy in neighborhood approaches them whether they need any help, poses as if a great computer tech vetran, and they proudly so "No thanks". I think you can understand AOL V9.0 is so simple. I used AOL for 14months without any trouble and telephone support was great. Just need Dhairyata to get phone connected to them.(waiting time). Now, you can try yourself the different modem settings. First note down all connection settings in a paper. Then, start playing with those settings. It will give a great time to learn whats going on inside those connections. You will understand each and every panel. internet connection is not like in 1995, you are in 2005, its much simpler. Keep on trying one after another settings and use your commonsense of computer vocabulory. After a couple of hours in your weekend, you might find a Colombus egg or Eureka. Just try, try but try to remeber what you are doing i.e. remember these panels and words and notes. Go to MS help, tells you what these words or phrases are meant. This knowledge will be useful to you for rest of your life time. This is your great chance to learn these stuffs, don't say, hey this is not for me, just don't give up. As long as modem does not connect to internet, don't worry much you or somehwere you will find a solution, trust google and keep on trying several universities' website about solving internet connection problem to univ. servers because one or other univ.'s server might be working the way your univ's server is working. try those hints. Main problems are caused by Proxy connections, firewall and DNS servers. IF you are not assigned with any fixed IP address to your computer, shut off proxy, select auto. ip and dns addresses. (1) modem can connect to internet (Task bar shows internet connection near clock). Well, my computer failed to connect to internet via internet explorer. though my modem connects. My univ.'s IT dept failed to solve this problem, though they handle 100s of DELL computers, and they blamed to DELL for wrong driver. Then, my BIL who is also network engineer, told me to contact DELL, and when I told him my warranty period already expired and he told me that DELL might provide phone support service and indeed, after hooking my telephone for 2 hours, one guy "Indian" who was nice and kind started to find out what happened to my computer. I did what he asked me to do. After making several trials of on and off, he failed and he told me he will call me with a solution. Never called. I have to find him this saturday, because my cellphone is free on sat. sun. and toll free works only on sat sun. I was given suggestions by several persons to format computer. I told them that thats dumb's suggestions, a person with a cancer, given solution like clone your gene and die it. What happened to my all softwares that I installed and ran. Copying to CD and back to computer wow... .terrible. Emails in outlook express sometime don't work as before, i.e. old emails ..... I tell them that tell me how to do fishing if you can not give me a fish, but don't tell me to break the dam and drain all river to find a fish. Don't give up. Learn it. You can do it. today's computers are made for peoples who even don't what " press any key" means and have to call to manufactuer "where is that "Press any key", I don't find in that keyboard". Don't go for Reformatting your hard disk. How many times will you reformat? Window reinstallation in safe mode might be good choice, disk reformatting is the worst and final choice once or twice in the life of that particular computer. GP

Thanks GP for your long but helpful suggestions.. man, I loved your lil humor inserts.. well, I have figured out what the problem is, the IT dept had disconnected my computer. Now, I got another problem.. I just finished scanning my computer using online antivirus programs and it showed that I have no viruses. But I can still not run the antivirus program in my computer, I again downloaded a new version given by my school and it still says some kind of .dll file is missing. Any of you guys know what's going on with this virus and all.. and one more thing, I get this message from time to time that the antivirus just detected Trojan virus and was able to delete it but not block it. So maybe it's because of that... any insights on that guys.. yeah, indisguise, better tell me those things promptly from next time or else you'll be blamed for ruining our friendship :) Nakkali

Nakkali kanchi, Can you kindly provide information on Windows version nstalled on your computer? To do this, on the desktop, right click on the My Computer icon, select Properties, and on the General tab, the top entry should be System. It should display the specific version and build of the OS. Post that information here so the techies can get a better handle on things. Again, I've little information to go on short of a physical examination of your machine so humour me and allow me to continue playing long-distance doctor. Of course, Shaq bro is willing and able to scorch the highways getting to you in his luxury SUV, and it may well be the best solution! Still, here's something to chew on. Trojans and other malware modify all kinds of Windows registry settings that anti-virus programs are mostly unable to completely trace and undo. Even garden variety spyware wreak havoc by disabling crucial registry keys, such as ones that enable protective Group Policy settings, or start Gateway Services and turn a machines into virus or spam sources. Thats why I asked you to check if ALG.EXE was running on your machine. This is just one of many possibilities. It is likely the Trojan is using your machine to attack other computers and/or work as a spam source. Hence the persistent network violations forcing the net admin to shut you out. This may be a continual occurrence. AV and spyware/adware removal software can achieve very good results, but not always a complete restoration of the OS to clean levels. Malware evolve continually with ingenious new attack vectors. Like crooks always a few steps ahead of cops, virus/malware writers are geniuses in their own right. From clues gleaned from your remarks thus far, its quite likely [I can only be certain if Shaq performs the examination and submits a pathology report] its game, set and match over for the OS on your machine. Most Trojans and viruses damage OS integrity by compromising the registry, partition table and file allocation tables/file indexes. The only quick and sure fire way is to reformat the HD and do a clean OS re-install. The operative word here is Quick and Clean Install. Thus, contrary to misconceptions harboured by some, formatting/re-install of the OS is not an event that can only occur a few times in the service life of a machine. It is, in fact, an efficent means to speedily restore systems to required operating parameters. To aid this, enterprise systems create and maintain image sets that perform a re-format and a complete OS install [with security patches and service packs integrated w/XP] and 15-20 pre-installed applications. All this completed in as little as 20 to 30 minutes! But I digress, and its not is an option for you. BACKUP ALL CRITICAL DATA FIRST. Of course, the option is to dive into the Windows registry to perform a search and delete of all references to the Trojan(s) and viruses, as well as its files on the hard disk. Thats just for starters and its no guarantee that all the holes will be plugged. Also necessary is to analyze every running process and service and ensure its validity and requirement. On a machine such as Nakkali Kanchi's, the challenge is to find EVERY malware, EVERY compromised registry setting and file, rectify them and bring XP back up to clean install level. Of course, anyone here who can achieve VERIFIABLE results on a thoroughly compromised system in a reasonable amount of time, without clean re-install, is urged to quickly send their resume to Microsoft! Cheers!
