Since 2008 april, there has been a new policy in OPT that the student has to be employed within 90days. I have a situation.
I have been hired by a tutoring company as a 20hr part time employee. But I only work 5-6hrs a week. I went to my international student office and inquired about the situation. They told me I have to work 20hrs a week, it does not matter if I am hired 20hr part time employee. How does USCIS checks how many hours I have been working? Please help.

Bissey, I dont think there will be a problem if the tutoring company can testify on your behalf that they originally intended to hire you for 20 hours but were not able to get you the number of hours. Tara just in case try and register as volunteer at the University of Arizona, that will help clear any doubts that the USCIS may have. And I dont think that the USCIS will have a problem until you can produce a valid paystub. Don't worry bro.

Your old friend.

How about the school? I am worried more about my international advisor than USCIS. I got the employement verificaiton from my school. My paystub has only few hours. It will show that i haven't worked 20hrs. would that be a problem?

On the fourth paragraph it says
"With regard to all types of employment, it must relate to the student's
program of study. In addition, in most, but not all cases, employment does
not need to be full time. Students engaged in regular, paid employment;
employment through an agency; or volunteer or unpaid internship should work
at least 20 hours per week
. Students in the performing arts may need to work
for multiple, short-term employers and it may be difficult to document the
exact number of hours worked. In such situations, students should keep a
list of all engagements and the dates / durations of those engagements, and
related proof, regardless of the exact number of hours worked, while on OPT."

But then again its not your fault if your tutoring job hired you intending to give you 20 hrs but now they can't because of their own issues.

Also, the USCIS cannot check a damn thing anybody is doing. Everyone works using their SSN, but they've never been able to catch someone unless they raided the damn place. But if you're still worried, register as a volunteer, that should shut them up!

Hello,
What about for OPt extension? Will the volunteering reason allow sb to apply for extension when their OPT expires?

Thanks
