After reading this news published in e-Kantipur I cant believe that our country Nepal is one of the poorest country in the world.

Nepal 11th largest origin of int’l students in US

By Manesh Shrestha

KATHMANDU, Nov 21 - Around 50 students gathered at a talk programme at the United States Educational Foundation (USEF) are listening intently to a lecture entitled "Demystifying the US Student Visa Process" by a US Embassy consular. The lecture is one of ten a US embassy official delivers at USEF annually to, as the title suggests, demystify the visa process.

Before the consular officer began her lecture, the education adviser at the centre asked prospective US-college students if they had completed a whole lot of other processes. Most raised their hands, showing that going to the U. S. for higher studies needs a lot of dedication.

"Every day an average of 300  students visit the Foundation to get information on studying in the U.S.," says Salena Malla, education adviser at USEF.

The number of young Nepalis studying in the U.S. has gradually increased over the years. According to Institute of International Education (IIE) data released earlier this week, there are 8,936 Nepali students studying in the U.S. in the 2007-8 academic year.

Of these, 64 percent are enrolled in undergraduate courses, 28.7 percent in graduate courses, six in optional practical courses and 1.3 percent in other courses.

Nepal currently ranks 11th among the countries of origin for international students in the U.S. and Nepalis make up 1.4 percent of foreign students.

India tops the list with 94,563 students followed by China with 81,127 and South Korea with 61,124 students.

Last year Nepal ranked 13th in this list with 7,754 students. The increase this year has been 15 percent compared to last year, according to IIE which publishes an annual report on educational exchange in and from the U. S.

Although many students would like to go the U. S. for the quality of education on offer, money is the primary concern.

"We would like to encourage students to examine their financial capabilities before thinking of studying in the U.S.," says Malla.

Annual costs vary widely between US$ 12,000 and US$ 50,000.

"About 70 percent of international students are self-funded," says Malla. Figures on what percentage of Nepali students in the U. S. are self-funded are not available.

"Intent to study, which is related to the ability to finance and past academic performance, are the main criteria we look at while adjudicating cases," said the consular officer, describing important factors affecting issuance of visas.

Although data on the exact number of student visas granted every year is not available, the consular officer says that in the summer, which is considered the high season since the academic year in most colleges begins in  autumn, as many as 250 students are interviewed for U.S. visas each day.

"For students, approximately half of all applicants are granted visas," she added.

Sunita Nyachhon (name changed) from Bhaktapur hopes to be in the lucky half. She has already secured admission in a state university, which cost less than a private one, and was at the lecture last week. She will be applying for visa soon to join classes in spring 2009.

"I am paying US$ 17,000 per year," she says. "But once I get there I hope to get scholarship since there are opportunities available." Asked if she will return to Nepal she says, "I will explore my options once I finish my studies."

Nepalese are very rich. Virtually everybody shows property of about 100,00000 when they go to visa interview.

I agree......
Every student who applies for US, UK, Australia or Canada shows property of around 1 crore, and a healthy bank balance of around 20 lakhs......
I gues every single household in mojor cities have someone from their home studying aborad (may that only be in paper). So Nepali people areon average richer than most of the countries. Nepal must hold the bizzare record of most multi millioniare (atleast 10 million) in that world.

Nepal is BOOMING. The remittance is flowing to Nepal, the government need to know the way to utilise it.

yes 100% sure we are richer than Dhotis and Chinkys, because their combined population is 1/3rd of total population of the world and according to data Nepalese students are 5% of their combined total of students in the US.

Back home also nowdays we are producing 1.5 million packetes of wai wai, rara, rum pum, mamas etc instants noodles that means everyday Nepalese are eating Rs2.1 Crores worth of noodles only.Nowdays even halikhetala ask Coca cola in khaja at the Dhaan Ropai time.

Nepalese people and industry can afford 31 hours of weekly loadsheding. We can afford everydays Bandh and strike.

We are not only rich by financially we are rich by heart also, e.g.mother of the parlimentry democracy UK is constitutionally a protastant christian Kingdom not only British Aussies and canadian also are proud to be a subject of British Monarch and sing" God save the Queen............."10% of hindu population Bangaladesh is Islamic Republic and hindus are treated 2nd class citizens there while In Nepal recently 97% of hindu countrys 2nd largest city Biratnagar was Bandh for 4 days called by Muslim organisation.

having around 10000 nepalese students studying in the US doesnt mean nepal is rich country. what about other 27 million people living in less than a 1 dollar a day? As I have been telling you guys for years "Nepal is dead country financially, politically and educationally". and will remain dead in the decades to come.

Morange...
Do you think Bangaladesh government did right by treating Hindus as second class citizen? If not, why you think we also need to treat any other religion as second class citizens. Everyone is Nepali regardless of religion or tribe they belong to.

I dont understand how ranking of Nepal on sending students to USA makes Nepal a rich country Or even Nepali rich citizens.  I am sure if we find the complete list, many rich countries are way below in list of sending their students to USA.  Just coming to USA does nt make one rich.  This is just the indication that Nepalis are so desperate to go out of country because of country's economic condition, unemployment rate, education and so on.  those who can gather 8-10 lakhs and have minimum education ( 12 years with fairly good english) tries country like USA, australia, canada, or Uk and those from rural area with not so good educational background tries for gulf countries or korea, malaysia and so on.  we nepalis are so poor that we need to send money back home to feed our folks back home.

however, I do agree that getting student visa from nepal is fairly easier than getting visa from countries like inida, china, pakistan and so on based on conversation with folks from these countries.
