Yes Chanaa is right on the money. A lot of info there. I would go either with canon or nikon though. These guys know what they have been doing.

For general purpose, get any SLR camera with 18 - 55 mm lens.

If that is your Budget and use, I would suggest you to go with Nikon D80 with Nikon 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 G ED-IF AF-S VR DX Zoom-Nikkor Lens. Nikon DSLRs are sturdy compared to Canon ones but, I have heard Canon ain't bad when compared in performance either;as I have never used one!
If you also want to go try out on portraits: Also get a Nikon 50mm/f1.8 (or Nikon 50mm/f1.4) lens. You can get f1.8 lens for around 120-130 $ but f1.4 will cost ya more. But if you don't have budget now, the 18-200 mm also perfroms quite well; just be sure to keep your distance and use the zoom while doing portraits as being near object make the image prone to distortion.
Also, If you are getting DSLR, then as soon as you get it, don't be afraid to experiment with it! Sticking to the usual presets won't get you anywhere; so better use all the functions it gives you!! Trial and error is how you learn! I am learning too in my own way!! =)
I am not Pro; just thought of sharing what I know!! Have fun with photography; and lemme tell you its wonderful out there!! Enjoy!! =)
