Hi guys:
I have just graduated and i have an OPT in my hand. I was just wondering if you can work anywhere with this OPT or not... like in Gasstation or resturant or anywhere until i get a decent job ... If i use it right now to work in gas station for time being, do you think its gonna be problematic when i file for H1 ....... Do you think at the time of issuing H1, they will look at my previous work history and not issue me a H1 visa cause i used my OPT in a wrong way.....
Please hit me back.... got to decide fast

No, you can't if you are talking in strict terms. Technically, the job you take should be directly related to your major. I am not sure about the impact on H1b thing though...

hahaha Thanks Bibas for shedding som light here...But I thought you were in your CPT!! Did you get the OPT already? In 2-3 short months?? I can see this thread reeking of gas right now. LMFAO
sgurung2, during OPT your work authorization card will allow you to work ANYWHERE. It doesn't matter where if you work until the time limit on your card. After that, you would need to get your status changed in order to remain here legally. Since you will be looking for another (office) job in the interim while working at a gas-station/restaurant, it wouldn't be any problem at all if you can find the office position that will eventually sponser you for the H1 later. All the best

Sgurung2,
According to the OPT rules and regulations, you only have to work in a field that is related to your academic background and nowhere else. But, even if you work at places other than your academic background, it will not effect any thing negative to you at any time of your life including while filing H1 application.
Good Luck!

Happyface, all the outta state educated Neps I know who have the so-called office jobs today with their H1s and GCs started with doing whatever they could get until they got the interview they seeked for so long (their holy grail - office jobs). Fortunately a few get recruited straight outta college (ahem) but for those who don't, getting an side-job is necessary unless you have mom and dad to finance your down and under days when you are looking for the grail. FYI, its worked for all I know who did that and it will work for sgurung (no doubt in my mind about that). However, to apply for the H1 later, he has to be working in his field of study though (unless he becomes a chef for an ethnic restaurant where his services are needed for the business' survival).

U can work anywhere u like. It really does not matter. I am also in my opt. But at the time of filing H-1b U must have got a decent job right know u can work in gas station, subways anywhere but at h-1 B filing u need a good sponsor and that can be any US company and the job u are doing should be related to your major. So dont worry right now but by he time of April better get a desent job or go to consultancy...
