I went to a korean grocery last night. The girl at the counter must have been Korean. If not the either Japanese or Chinese. The line was long and I was just observing their behavior with customers. They seemed pretty curt with people from their own races or asians. But they had extra service attitude with the white folks. I have nothing against the white folks but I am constantly wondering why we treat them better than we treat our own people? Even in Nepal, I remember people treat foreigners better than our own people. You go to Indian restaurant, they don't give a rats ass compared to the white folks. What is it? Do we feel inferior to the white folks that we have to be extra nice to them? Or does it all boil down to who's got the dollar bills? Are we being extra nice to them so that we may get some pieces of their dollars? Sure would like to hear if anyone's got interesting to say about this.

I have worked at Indian restaurent for 6 months. I would give lots of attention to white folks because they geniunly tip servers. I tired that few times with desi customers (not nepali), gave them lots of attention, but to my surprise most of them dont know what the gratitude means. cheapskate people. and working at fries and hotel i have realized that asians .. indians and chinese (dont know much about nepali) litereally cling for discounts as if it was "Mandi Bazaar" , may that be for electronics for sale or for rooms. One time one indian (who looked like he can afford at well) was bargaining about 5 dollars for room rate. i was pissed of and didnt go a penny down. right after that one white (corporate guy) came in he was ready to pay almost double for the same room. so i kinda felt bad for him, gave him really good discount and he really appreciated me for that. since then, we kinda become fren. thats how white folks are. they dont pinch dollars and very generous towards service they recieve, therefore, businesses are willing to take good care of them ..

On the same topic .. i want to mention one more thing. just being white doesnt help. there was one decent looking guy from turkey, he was worse than indian in bargaining. he got good service for the first time, but after that nobody gave him rats ass about his accomodation. thats how it works. you get what you pay. and in general white folks here in america are generous when it comes to paying for service.

I second with what Bhusan has said. I had a similar situation when I went to a Gas Station that was partly an Indian Store and of course was owned by an Indian. There were two lines in the gas station counter, one for people who bought gas and other non-indian related items and another for indian items. I was in the later line but to my surprise, I found people in the other line mainly white being served first even though some had arrived after me. I complained to the manager but I am not sure how much it helped. Anyway, I have always realized be it in an asian store in USA or in Nepal or simply in a circle of friends, that we seem to take for granted those people similar to us. That is why you get phone calls early in the morning or late at night asking for favors, that you cannot possibly deny even though your situation says otherwise. It has to do with a culture that we come from where people are not respected, and those who don't get respected don't voice their concern. And if what deja_blue is true for everyone than it is sad because money should not be considered as a value to judge someone's worth in life.

This blatant inferiority complex is worse in Nepal. From the time you land at the airport, you will see Nepalis being extremely subservient, if not just plain groveling, to anybody with white skin. A while back, at Education Enterprise bookstore, the clerk there would not give me time of day because he was too busy chatting up some hippie. And that hippie was not even going to buy anything while I was holding two Tintin comics and a Hardy Boys book to buy. Oh well!

true, most desis know a little about gratitude, as in bahiri dikhawa. but what makes deja blue think that all whities are all that greatful. stereotyping ko pani hadd huncha bhai. not all whities are red-necks, and not all desis are makkhichoos. anyway. I think its not only the hard $$$$$'s that make the "poor-colored ppl" feel inferiorated, its this inferiority complex that is ingrained within us. kids, as small as a five year old in Nepal will not have a hard tyam putting khaires topmost in the racial hierarchy. khaires are second to god back home. or not, they share the same position. "athiti devo bhava"

I agree with Bhusan ...but to a greater extent, I agree with Ms. Ratopul.... My experience has been totally opposite, regarding tipping the servers at restaurants...At work, we go out to nicer restaurants every Friday with my fellow American Co-workers and Management teams. To my surprise, they were tipping $4-5 for lunch for a group of 6. I would usually follow the rule of 15% of the total bill...but, Whites are misers as well as any other race....Just my experience....
