Dear all,

Greater DC Vipassana is organizing meditation courses for children and teenagers on 13th and 14th of August. This is a rare opportunity for your kids to learn the technique of Anapana since 4 qualified teachers including a Nepali are coming from the Vipassana Meditation Center, MA to conduct this course. We had a very successful course last year with 18 students.

Anapana is the first step in the practice of Vipassana, wonderful teaching of Great son of Nepal, the Buddha. It is the observation of natural, normal respiration, a simple technique that helps develop concentration of the mind. In this technique, breath is taken as a tool of concentration of the mind. They are taught to focus their mind on the inhaling and exhaling breaths. It is easy to learn, objective and scientific. It has a profound appeal to people of all backgrounds, of every religion or no religion, from every part of the world.

The aim of the course is to introduce the children to Anapana meditation. With practice, meditation students gain mastery over their impulses and actions, becoming calmer and more concentrated. They develop a better understanding of themselves and how their minds work; gaining an inner strength that helps them choose right actions over wrong ones.

The course is designed in such a way that every child would have fun during the course. The course includes Anapana instructions and practice for about 15/20 minutes, crafts projects, games, story time, and much more. A simple vegetarian meal and snacks at breaks are provided. There is no fee to attend the course since Vipassana teachers and old students of Vipassana are providing the service. However, such courses run by the donation of old-meditation-students of this tradition. After completion of the course your kids may donate with their happy mind, which is not mandatory.

If you are interested, please feel free to contact me by email. We may arrange to pick up and/or drop off your kids from a certain locations. I also have a video called 'The Compass' available for your kids which may encourage them to attend the course. The video is 11 minutes long and it shows the benefits children have gained though the practice of Anapana meditation.

This is a wonderful course to introduce meditation to the kids. As explained by Umesh Giri, kids are taught Anapana meditation in a very fun and relaxed manner. Each day, a number of 30-minute meditation sessions are held with fun activities and frequent healthy snacks times in between.

Earlier this year, we took our 8-year-old son to his first children course; he really enjoyed it and wants to go again. The center we go to, California Vipassana Center, at North Fork, is situated on a large wilderness area at the southern side of Yosemite in the Sierra Mountain. There were about 30 kids and their parents. The kids really enjoyed the meditation sessions and the outdoor activities. Parents were allowed to stay in the center only if they had taken at least one 10-day Vipassana course. However, parents and children stayed apart. Each group of six kids had two very caring counselors who stayed with the group around the clock. They took the safety and well being of the kids very seriously. There were 25 parents / guardian of the participating kids. While they kids were busy with their activities, we, the parents, volunteer in many activities including kitchen work, light construction work, paintings newly built student quarters etc. We also did meditation at the center 3 times a day. At CVC, we had few parents who had not taken the 10-days course and so they were not allowed to stay in the center. They left their kids and came to pick them up at the end of the course; again kids were looked after very well in the center.

Again, this is a great opportunity for the kids to learn the wonderful Anapana meditation.

Hi Sand_is_deep,

Adults can join 10 day Vipassana meditation course worldwide throughout the year. You have to register for the course from online. Lodging and vegetarian meals are provided at the center. It's free. However, such courses run by the donation of old-meditation-students of this tradition. After completion of the course you may donate according to your capacity.

To find the nearest location to you, visit:

The technique is same no matter where you go. They use audio and video instructions given by Vipassana teacher Mr. S. N. Goenka. His assistant teachers conduct the course and are available to answer students' questions.

There are at least 6 centers in Nepal.

This is worth giving a trial.
