Pundit Jee, If hanging to death would be the cure for all the evills, What the hell all these stupid law makers did all these years...Certainly death panelty is not the solution which is already proved by the history (of capital punishment)...so i rquest u to make any other suggestion besides death panelty...may be retrospecting our own culture (the culture that hails only the rich) and promoting trasperency and accountability (just some examples)..and so forth.. [sh*t, don't have time, but what the heck, work can wait] Most non-political/apolitical Nepalese are probably reacting to former PM Deuba's arrest by the current fascist regime in Kathandu with uncharacteristic aplomb. Others are probably gleefully saying "khuchin" - I am probably in that camp. With all the time at his hand now, Deuba can ponder how he ended up from PM's chair to jail cell in matter of 3 months. If and when Girija joins him in Kathmandu's Central Jail or Hanuman Dhoka, they can compare notes. If these dim-witted personalities cannot figure out the reasons for their misfortune, I'll help them out. Here are my quick picks (1) They should have realized that the monarchy was the most powerful institutions in the country despite the 1990's constitution's attempts to curtail its power. The king had the army that bore his title "Royal". Moreover, the 1990 constitution gave the king pejorative over certain areas, which King G has skillfully exploited. Again Congress/UML should blame themselves because their hand-picked delegates drafted that constitution [in most countries, including Iraq now, they elect constitutional assembly, ironically the one of the main grievances of the Maoists]. (2) They should have realized that the feudal lords of Narayanhiti are not the type that play by the rules. The conspirators there were just bidding for the opportune moment - a Nepali version of the Ides of March, which ironically came on Feb 1. They should have remembered that they had been fooled once already, in 1961. "Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me," or as George W puts it "Fool me once shame on you but you can't fool me again." (3) They should have realized that their only counterbalance to the vestigial powers of the monarchy was the ardent support of the people. Boy, they lost the love of the people so fast through internal bickering, corruption, mismanagement, politicization of everything [there was a time in the mid-1990s, when you needed a reference letter from a MP to get primary school teacher job in my village]. I blame Congress more than UML for betraying the aspirations of the people because Congress ruled the country for the longest time. Also, Congress party COULD HAVE been a stabilizing political force in a two-party state if these 2 nut-heads didn't have their egos run wild. The Royal Commission on Corruption Control is a farce. Sure corruption is a major problem in Nepal but that problem is not confined to Congress, Congress (D), or UML [ask the offspring former panche PMs, ministers, MPs, bureaucrats that are residing in Boston, DC, NYC, Chicago Dallas, LA where they got the money from]. What about the corruption in the palace? The most corrupt figure of the 1980s, Sharad Chandra Shah is now a key advisor to the king - what a joke! Also, what about the king's finance? They don't earn a single cent; they grab it from the state?s coffers and none of that is made public. Remember George W Bush and Dick Cheney just released their 1040s. Even if this Nepali tyrant doesn't come in the Forbes' Richest 500 Kings, Despots, and Dictators? list, he has lots of money, all them gotten illegally. Gyane used to lead a gang that stole statues and sold them in the west. His father sold the Nagarjung forest and the Naranyathi Palace and stashed the money in the Swiss Bank. Heard that they have become financially savvy. Instead of getting puny returns on Swiss Bank accounts, they are investing in hedge funds. It is reported that Richard Blum (www.blumcapital.com), a money manager, once the owner of Northwest Airline and now married to Senator Diana Feinstein of CA, manages Gyane's money. We should all send Richard Blum an e-mail at and ask him how much of Gyane?s money he manages.
