My passport is valid for the next 5 months only. So within this period, can I travel outside USA (probably Nepal) without renewing the passport. I have also heard that one cannot travel abroad if his/her passport is valid for less than 6 month. Do anybody has experience in this regard?

The application form for Visa specifically says you need a passport valid at least for next 6 months. That means: Get your pp renewed before you apply for visa or travel.
You might want to find out from the pros.
