My friend just got his US permanent residency through DV. He is in Northern Virginia (DC metro area) right now. He is looking some help for his future study/career in US. He received his bachelor degree in electrical engineering from IOE (institute of engineering, pulchok, Nepal) in 2008. he has 2.5 yrs wrok experience in micro hydro and solar photovoltaic in Nepal. He has good knowledge in matlab, autocad, basic programming knowledge, and some trainings including 15 days from IIT india. He  is thinking about some of the following options.
1) Graduate degree in Electrical engineering  (solar photovoltaic)
2) Com Eng ( programming, networking or any)---->  Training ---> entry level job-----> then Graduate degree in Com Eng
3) MBA
4)  Any others  (which one---?)
What do you think which one is good  for the future perspective? If you choose option two, which specific field in Com Eng is the best for him. He is planning to join the school in fall 2011.

Your suggestions would be highly appreciated.

In these days finding a job is the hardest thing, job stability is a distant second.

IT job sector is still stronger than engineering, i.e. you can find a job in IT easier than you can find a job in engineering. So, getting a job is your concern then stick with IT. But I think engineering provides more stability if by good fortunes you do get into engineering.

Now for your second question, it really depends upon your friend (or is it yourself? admit it) what he is good at. If he enjoyed programming, go for it. If not, then don't force it, go for network admin, database admin, security expert etc etc.

With education and experience from outside US, you will have a real hard time getting a job going with option 3 so I would dump that for now.

Hope this helps.

 @Tmobile: Thanks.

@kiddo:  I opened this thread for my friend. This week is his first week in US. Thats for sure. I have been in US since 4 yrs and currently working, but i have little knowledge in IT/Engineering career. Thank you so much for your help and i hope it will be helpful for him to decide.

Any other suggestion please?

Tell him to google EIT.

If he is interested in engineering career in NYC or NJ, tell him to forward his resume to me.   I will send it to couple of my contacts.

Good Luck! to him.
