I read it in Nepali newspaper a few days ago. I can't find it, because since it was not in English and I don't know how to google for it in Nepali. But he says something like this: I did this and that to the country. दिनभरि हलो जोतेको गोरुलाइ बेलुका घर फर्के पछि घास को आश भए जस्तै मलाइ देशले केहि गरिदियोस् भन्ने आशा छ ....and so on. I am sure what he did is good for him and may be he did something good for Nepal too if he didn't leave bad image among people he visited, but asking something in return from govt/peopel is ridiculous. I am sure several Nepali also helped him on his way, but whatever he did was his own enterprise and he should have thought of future himself.

How many of us believe he rode bicycle from Nepal to all over the world. NO! He did not. He flies to the country and rides the bicycle for 30- 40 minutes infront of TV (if arranged by local Nepal organization). So in US, do not think he rode all the way from west coast to east coast.

Let him to say, what he aspects from the country and the country can give what it can give, either just a bike or retirement. Any way, even being in USA we are more and more negetive to every thing. ha ha

Timer, I have respect for the following people: Mahabir Pun Sanduk Ruit Bhagawan Koirala Uttam Sanjel Madan Krishna/Haribansha Dr Lekhnath Subedi and so on. I also respect leaders such as Ganesh Man Singh and Manmohan Adhikari. I also admire those entrepreneurs who are living in Nepal and creating jobs, and even NRNs such as Dr Upendra Mahato and Jiba Lamichhane. Those who haven't begged anything from our country's treasury, I have respect for them. Those who leech it, or those who always complain about it, I don't have any respect. The reason why I get pissed off at people who ask for govt money is because sometimes they actually get it, otherwise, they simply spread this wrong notion that govt should somehow pay for these retiring poets, artists or bicyclists. Hell, no. Govt must look after poor people effectively. Govt's money is our money, tax raised from us, and it doesn't have so much of a freedom on how to spend it.

WOW we do know how to pull others legs. I have no idea about the facts about his journey but he did provide inspiration to me at least .It was pretty good to see in the spread of WAVE magazine when i was going to school that this guy was traveling the world and if you dare its possible.knowing he single handedly with just the power of fund rising has been able to accomplish so much. He had a dream and he conqured it. He marketed Nepal to people who when asked about nepal sometimes ingorantly say "Is is a part of india??" This was his career and I wont say he did it for the country but he did something innovative but he did have a Nepali Flag waving in his byke whereever he went!! We still have a culture to put doctors and pilots and poets and politicians in high pedestal but someone as enduring as him is just another publicity seeking dirt? Why cant we just sit back and support people like him.

In think that its sad that he has to ASK for money from the government. Why cannot the governmnet be proactive for once and reward this kinds oh endevours....oh wait ...i think they are still busy feeding the corupt fat cats who drool under its roof.....I think nepali government is infamous for ignoring its national heritage like poets and people like him. I remember that several poets like Parijat and Laxmi Prashad Devkota died in poverty. I think its legit to ask for some kind of trust from the Govt if you have contributed in a significant way. I believe that he must have done a better job marketing Nepal compared to a salaried employee at Nepal tourism board who in the first place found the job through nepotism.....

Pixie, Words such as 'publicity seeking dirts' are yours, not mines. I don't care about this guy, and I don't think this guy deserves to be paid from national exchequer. Sure, if he inspired you (or probably some others), then surely you will be willing to listen for his lectures or buy his postcards or support whatever business venture he starts out and then he will be able to make some money?--BUT NOT ANY PENNY FROM GOVT MONEY and that is my position. Everybody has some passion. All Nepali, wherever they are, have done their bit to say Nepal isnot part of India. Don't give too much credit to this guy alone. Look, frankly nobody cares about a bike riding foreigner. If you want to give Nepal an international fame, do something creative, build some nice product that people find useful or write some good theorem, and fame will come. Here is what professor Pigou, father of development economics, wrote long ago. If some people are rich, it allows them to pursue vocations poors can't pursue. Flying around the world in the balloon is normally a hobby of rich people. No govt should be paying for these frivolous hobbies of any individual and they normally don't. Nobody should expect either.

The important thing is not to blame Pushkar Shah, he is not a debate topic, there are millions of things to talk, No offense, in Sajha, if you see the threads, every threads is just critisizing others, I don't mean, you can't do that, definitely do that, but it had become our culture. We use low level language to every thing, no respect, no dignity, we are worse than in Nepal. Definitely, it is a democracy, we can debate, talk, discuss, but our discussion had never ending and we never try to understand other and try to read others point, the more you disrepect others, the more you become happy, Any way I don't want to say anyone, it is our culture, the way we grow up, except me, every one is bad, except me every one is autocratic, I know every thing in this world, probably sometime sajha is the another world, where millions of people have their own thoughts, Ya, Pire, I respect all the name that you have taken but there are thousands of non published leaders, artist, principal, teachers, to be respected in our country, Puskhar is one of them, I don't know what is he saying but he is on them, who did something rather not doing anything, probably it is for his benefits, definitely, neither Haribansa or Ganeshman had just for the country, their is part of them too. So, I don't want to blame even leaders, thousands of them had secrificed for the countries, but I don't want to name who are good or bad, but at this point, the worst had the good days, but hope even good leaders will lead our nation one day. But the problem is not only the leaders, it is always, the educated people like us who are doctors, engineers, leaders, beaurocrats, who are killing our country because we are not responsible to our job, with our society. So, leaders are part of us, you me and others.

Timer,
The problem with your argument is that you are trying to fudge the issue. Cynicism is representative of global mental frame, not specific to Sajhaites or Nepalese; in deed, I have found Americans to be even more cynical about everything including their leaders.
I have a clear view of everything here, and I reject both your and Pixie (who happens to equate Pushkar's case with Devkota's case, ha!)'s view that somehow in some way Pushkar is a holy cow. Look, the dude's interview came out a few days ago, and he cleared said that he wanted the state to give him something. Now I have a philosophical position on how a state must be governed, and #1 in that happens to be safeguarding national exchequer. I am tired of our state doling out money to sick leaders or poets or whoever is closer to the prime minister, including the journalists.
I think people should choose their career wisely. They must think about their future. If poetry doesn't have future in the country, then they should learn something other than poetry so that they have something salable skill in their possession. Similarly, what Pushkar Shah did may inspire some of you, but look, the era of expedition is gone long ago. Read the history, Magelan, Columbus, Vasco De Gama, Amundsen, Lewis Clark, Hillary Tenzing... these terrestrial travellers are gone long ago. Biking in the world can't be anything more than just a personal hobby. Pushkar might have derived personal pleasure, but what he did in his bike hardly made any difference in Nepal or in the world.
Still, with all the publicity, if he can get some private firm to employ him, good for him. But, in a country where people are dying of diarrhea , I am dead set against any arbitrary doling out of charity to any one. This is not negativism; it is a matter of principle, a principle that govt money should be regarded as the most sacred thing.

Pushkar Shah demans retirement pension??
========================================
Unfortunately pension is given if you serve in a company, or pay taxes to the country. Unfortunately he earned nothing in terms of money so his pension should be zero.

I also oppose this idea too. So pathetic to ask for govt help. Harey!! what Pushar did is his personal endeavour and did at his own free will. Why public money should be wasted on him? To criticize is part of almost every culture but to use profane languages and ending up in dhisum dhisum is also very typical of Nepalese culture. I think there is a fine line of distance between private and public responsibility. For instance, You clean your house that's private act but throwing the garbage is another responsibility: either you can dump in your house/ kitchen garden or discard it in the garbage container kept for public use. Decision to dump it outside the public container will affect everyone. I have seen everywhere in Kathmandu and in different cities of Nepal that even this simple way of handling simple issue is done so irresponsibly. I mean it stinks everywhere.
When we will be able to understand private and public duties and way to manage them intelligently and wisely, I think life in nepal will be very peaceful :)

This is from another forum posted sometime back link is here: http://www.everestuncensored.org/archives/2007/01/pushkar_shah_is_a_loser_and_li.html The cyclist Pushkar Shah is a loser and liar. He was invited to Rudra Pandey's home in Arlington, Massachusetts, USA and was donated about US$ 1,000 for his famous mission but which turned out to be false and fabricated one to our great disappointment. He lied to us that he was a true cyclist. Actually, he cheated. He was saying that he would not go back to ... Nepal before completing the world tour. He mentioned that he had several girlfriends on the way,and even showed us the photo of one from China. In contrary to his claim that he would never go back to Nepal before completing the mission, he has been visiting Nepal frequently to win popular contest and boast about his so called success. In fact , he is not cycling , but has just been flying . He cycles only in Nepal and in capital and city areas . In other parts of the world, he just flies. Please do not believe him. He lies. He cheated us in the U.S..We feel so bad for donating him. Please do not believe him. Please inquire and investigate him when you see him. He is a hypocrite.
