This is a great movie--the NAMESAKE--based on Jhumpa Lahiri's best-seller by the same title. I watched it in a theater in NYC and also found a couple of clips posted on youtube.
Now, does anybody know if it's available online in its entirety (like so many others, desi and non-desis)? Thanx.

You should be ashamed of yourself. You call yourself Nepalese??? Your brain is infested with Indian films. You went to theater to watch that dhoti movie and that was not enough, now you need it online too. It's pathetic, you calling yourself Nepalese and keeping india and indian artists in youy heart.

And why cant you be a Nepali and watch an "Indian" film (I'd be hard pressed to call the Namesake "Indian" - it is as much American as Indian - not that it matters)

A well made movie, sure, like any other Mira Nair movie.
A great movie? No way.
I am not even sure what the story line is trying to convey, other than a typical life of a 1st generation NRNs.

Personally, I liked the movie. I usually don't like adaptations of books I have read. This was an exception. I read the book right around when it came out - about 2-3 years ago I think - and I could have sworn there was more about Boston/New England in the book than in the movie which appeared to be based mainly in New York.(not that that's a big deal in any way )

It is not that easy to adapt a book into cinema and I thought Nair did a good job with the adaptation overall.

Thought some of you might find this interesting. Nair and Lahiri on Charlie Rose:

(forward to 36:00 for the correct segment)

'American blend' was also made on the circle of the indian restaurant at US. I watched it online for free.

wow! i haven't seen the movie or read the book either, but after going through all these rave reviews in sajha and elsewhere, i can't wait to watch it. i hope they will still keep playing the movie until next to next weekend in my city. *crosses his fingers* :P.

got hold of this review from youtube and guess what? i quite liked the nerdy looking reviewer and her enticing get up :P, but did not quit understand what she was talking about... hehe :P

"the movie would have been good, if they had taken the kids out of the movie"

LOL! i cracked really hard when she said that. did she understand the storyline? don't speak if you don't know :P. kal penn is not one of the best actors -- true! but did you get the essence of this story at all? :D

She has some point (although the essence of the story would be not complete w/o the kids). The kids screwed up the story's any gist. Tell me what is the movie trying to tell you, that you haven't already seen on other bolly/holly movie?

i am a bit skeptic to comment on this, coz i haven't seen the movie.:P. but from what i read about it, it's the things that the parents have to go through coz of the huge generational gap between the first and second generation immigrants and the emotion that the first generation immigrants have to carry through in the attempt to narrow down the generational gap is what the story is based upon, hoina?

and to say that the movie would have been great, if they had taken the kids out of it, is to claim that:

either
second generation characters with the likes of kal penn et. al's mediocre to worse performance marred the story line.

or
tabu and irfan khan's deeply moving performance overshadowed the story line.

whatever is the case, i am just wondering, has the movie, unintentionally, managed to swift the base of the story-line from first and second generation immigrants' incompatibility to mostly towards emotional relationship and romance between tabu and irfan khan? :D

from charlie rose's show, it seems to me that Jhumpa Lahiri was happy by the way Mira Nair did this subtle transition and showed more of the chemistry and romance between the parents in the movie that the book didn't depict! :D

but, without watching the movie or reading the book,
what do i know? :P :P

LooTe :-)
