NepeSahila, Imi ....you are so deeply engrossed in your own world, that you have failed to realise that this is the 21st century. Secularism is the way to go, and nothing can stop it. As about smart ideas and power in the hand , I would say you are right about the power part but smart ideas , I wouldn't think so. Why would you think Nepal is where it is inspite of the Brahmins and Chettris playing the major part for the better half of our history. I am not blaming them for the situation of the country, but think for yourself, if they were so smart, as you like to put it, shouldn't Nepal have been a model state by now. No particular caste, religion or ethnicity is superior then the other. Do you guys really want Nepal to remain a Hindu state, for the betterment of the nation and all the people therein? Are you sure its not for your hurt ego, or the sinking feeling deep inside on the realisation that other religion will be treated equally to Hindu by the state. With a |Hindu population of 80% (as per census) why should you be scared of the mere 20% who have just as much difference among themselves as they have with Hinduism, just because you don't have state protection now?

Imi, you seem to be deeply worried about the situation of the country now that Nepal has been declared a secular nation. Did you feel the same way for the thousands killed during the years of insurgency ? Did you do anything about the peoples from humla, Rolpa and other rural areas when they didn't have anything to eat ? Did you do anything for the innocent Nepalese killed in Iraq ? Of all the trouble that has done harm to our country, your greatest concern is that Nepal is no more a Hindu nation and that is going to lead the country into darkness and chaos. I completely fail to understand how can you say that, when equality and freedom of religion and expression is the cry of the modern world. Aren't you trying to push back Nepal into the feudal period ? You are afraid that now missionaries will get a freehand on their mission. If you think Hinduism is great then I see no reason why you should be afraid. Hinus will always remain Hindu if it has that greatness and people who doesn't, are never meant to be.

ImI , I understand what you are trying to explain. Don't misunderstand me, I have utmost respect for Hinduism and my best friend since my school days is a chettri. I have known some wonderful Brahmins also. They are all wonderful people, and I won't say anything that would disrespect their religion. But in the matter of long term national interest, I beleive that secularism would be beneficial. If not now, then maybe after 50 yrs, people would still cry out for religious equality. If it happens then, it would be bloodshed, and more violence. This is the right time. Nevertheless Hinduism will always remain the majority, have no worry about that.

Birjunj shut down for the second day

Led by World Hindu Federation (WHF), Hindu religious organizations shut down the southern town of Birgunj, Parsa district, for the second consecutive day on Thursday, against the parliament’s declaration turning Nepal into a secular state.

WFP is a fundamentalist Hindu outfit lead by Bharat Keshar Singh, the honorary ADC of the King. The erstwhile royal government had shelled out millions of rupees to Singh to organise a WFF’s public meetings, according to reports. nepalnews.com mk May 25 06

Millions of Rs ? According to which reports ???

Girija received 30 crores from India for the agitation. The mob received Rs 500+1 bottle of beer+good meals from Girija. Still Girija spent only 15crores in 19 days. Rest went to him pocket. He must have received a large sum of money for declaring Nepal secular. What about that?????

In a day and age when anyone can shop for a "Buddha", or a "Shiva" or an "Allah" like shopping for a candy in Namaste supermarket, why are the Nepali stooges of the India-based fundamentalist Hindu organisations and parties worried about losing their "market share" in the market place of religions, esp when they know they're gone lose even more under "Hindu Nepal"? Don't you guys know that the SPA is a trust-buster in disguise. They just busted the Hindus' state-sanctioned "natural monopoly" position in the market place of religions by declaring Nepal a "secular state" in order to give the consumers more choice. This is a victory for Free Market Economy.

In a day and age when people change religions like clothes, "Hindu state" ko auchitya nai k chha ra! "Hindu state" tag is an albatross around Nepal's neck.

"Secularism" is gonna create a level playing field, if it already hasn't. Jamana free competition ko ho - state-supported monopoly ko hoina. The state has no business throwing good money after bad to rescue "auchitya sakiyeko", loss-making Hindu rajya.

Pashupati Nath lay Hindu fanatics haru lai buddhi suddhi deun.

Karmapa, what do you actually mean by this? What makes you think consumers were merely under a monopoly? Were anyone ever prohibited from practising their own religion or converting to a religion of their choice under Hindu Nepal?

That day, I will be mourning as a BLACK DAY
in the history of Nepal

... in the history of oldest religion in the whole universe,
and will be marked in the world's history as a demise of harmless, most
tolerant, and colorful culture by western $, Maoism, and by the power of
faithless shameless people who has no pride in Nepali culture.

This deed, they will regret in the days to come...

Excerpt from
BBC commentary by a fellow true Nepali

"This is a complete nonsense. I strongly object the validity of this
proclamation.

First, this parliament is not a elected body. It was reinstated on the basis of muscle power.

It solely doesn't represent the spirit of Nepalese people.
FEW HUNDRED THOUSANDS HOOLIGANS DO NOT REPRESENT 27 MILLION POPULATION OF NEPAL.

If they have faith in people, they should have taken it to public voting. Is there anyone who dares?

What a shame?"

eNigma too,
Let me explain you one thing. Being smarter or dumber has nothing to do with being good or bad. Smart people can be bad and dumb people can be bad and vice versa. One more time for repeating same thing, those so called smart people who happened to be Brahmans and Chhetris don't care about other Brahmans and Chhetris. Why don't you understand? They are discriminating the whole population in general regardless of their caste or creed. Do you think that if a Brahman is poor and uneducated, other Brahmans would take him as of the same social standard as theirs? No. The issue of caste is long gone, you know? If a lower caste or janajatis are rich, they acquire the same standards as the upper castes.
Yes, everyone knows that this is 21st century, even Nepalese know it, but do you think they are in 21st century? Have they maintained any other substandards like education, their ability, political and religious consiousness to call themselves that they are in 21st century?
One more thing, no matter how secular Nepal will remain, the government is not going to take other religions as importantly as Hindu religion. I guess I don't have to explain why.

Karmapa,
We are not favoring Hindu state for sake of Hindu religion. Not only Hinduism, in this world of capitalism and materialism, all religions are fading. People don't believe in faith anymore and believe in themselves instead.
I think you are taking this issue a bit lightly, comparing religion with marketting and economy at least not in case of Nepal. We don't have a society where someone can freely declare that he/she is an athiest yet.

<<< In a day and age when people change religions like clothes, "Hindu state" ko auchitya nai k chha ra! "Hindu state" tag is an albatross around Nepal's neck.>>>
I don't know where are you going with this, but I think this is why we should preserve our religions.

THERE WOULD BE MORE 'YES' IF YOUR REPHRASE THE POLL AS
'DO YOU SUPPORT NEPAL TO BE SECULAR STATE AS OPPOSED TO HINDU STATE '....RATHER THAN A POLL
ON WHETHER WE SUPPORT THE PARLIAMENT'S DECISION.
THERE IS SOME CONFUSION ON THE POLL...IF THE POLL INTENTS TO SEE WHETHER PEOPLE SUPPORT SECULAR STATE AS APPOSED TO HINDU STATE.....UNLESS IT INTENTS TO ASK WHETHER PEOPLE SUPPORT THE PARLIAMENT DECISION.

THERE IS A COORDIAL HARMONY BETWEEN DEMOCRACY AND SECULAR STATE JUST AS PANCHAYAT AND HINDU STATE HAD WHEN KING MAHENDRA DECLARED DURING THE UPRISING OF PANCHAYAT ERA.

A TRUE DEMOCRATIC COUNTRY SHOULD NEVER IMPOSE ONE RELIGION TO IT'S COUNTRY.

THEY JUST DONT CO -EXIST.

SECULARISATION IS THE VOICE OF THE UPRISING TRUE DEMOCRATIC NATION.

I am wondering how much funding did the Nepal Government of then used for the develpopement of the Lumbini area. Being the birthplace of Buddha, I don't think the government did anything more then creating a committee. Had it not been for other buddhist nations Lumbini would have been another neglected Tarai area. If this is not discrimination in one form then what is it ? I have personally seen a person being beaten up by a crowd because he objected to the people putting color on him during Holi.

If we need hinduism, why don't we read follwoing text, we will understand more what is hinduism, I have seen a Hindu Temple in heart city, New York, and gurudwar on Mass Ave, NW, in only seculars state, every religions can survive with dignity

Truth is one, though the sages know it as many."

Hinduism
Hinduism (सनातन धर्म; commonly called San¨¡tana Dharma, roughly Perennial Faith by Hindus) is the oldest major world religion still practiced today and first among Dharma faiths. Hinduism is characterized by a diverse array of belief systems, practices and scriptures. It has its origin in ancient Vedic culture at least as far back as 2000 BC. It is the third largest religion with approximately 890 million followers worldwide, 96% of whom live in the Indian subcontinent.

OM, a sacred syllable and a quintessential symbol of Hinduism. Its meanings are many.

Perhaps the Hindu spirit, inspired by no one man or woman in particular, is best captured in a line from the ancient Rig Veda, the "oldest religious scripture in the world." (1):

Sanskrit: एकम् सत् विप्रा: बहुधा वदन्ति
Transliteration: Ekam Sat Vipr¨¡ha Bahudh¨¡ Vadanti
English: "Truth is One, though the Sages know it as Many."
-- The Rig Veda (Book I, Hymn CLXIV, Verse 46)
Essentially, any kind of spiritual practice followed with faith, love and persistence will lead to the same ultimate state of self-realization. Thus, Hindu thought distinguishes itself by strongly encouraging tolerance for different beliefs since temporal systems cannot claim sole understanding of the one transcendental Truth.

To the Hindu, this idea has been an active force in defining the "Eternal Dharma." It has been for Hinduism what the infinite Divine Self of Advaita is to existence, remaining forever unchanged and self-luminous, central and pervasive, in spite of all the chaos and flux around it. In general, Hindu views are broad and range from monism, dualism, pantheism, panentheism, alternatively called monistic theism by some scholars, and strict monotheism, but are not polytheistic as outsiders perceive the religion to be. Hinduism has often been confused to be polytheistic as many of Hinduism's adherents are monists, and view multiple manifestations of the one God or source of being. Hindu monists see one unity, with the personal Gods, different aspects of only One Supreme Being, like a single beam of light separated into colors by a prism, and are valid to worship. Some of the Hindu aspects of God include Devi, Vishnu, Shiva, Krishna, and Ganesh / Ganesha. One of the most prominent Hindu monists is the great saint, Ramakrishna whose preferred form of God is Devi and who reiterated traditional Hindu beliefs, that average devotees can invoke God, in whatever form a devotee prefers, (or as monists prefer to call, Ishta Devata, i.e., the preferred form of God) and ask for God's grace in order to attain Moksha, and end of the cycle of rebirth.

However, like Judaeo-Christian religions which believe in angels, Hindus also believe in less powerful entities, such as devas.

Contemporary Hinduism is now divided into four major divisions, Vaishnavism, Shaivism, Shaktism, and Smartism. Just as Jews, Christians, and Muslims all believe in the same one God but differ in their conceptions of Him, Hindus all believe in one God but differ in their conceptions. The two primary forms of difference are between the two monotheistic religions of Vaishnavism, which conceives God as Vishnu, and Shaivism, which conceives God as Shiva. Other minor forms are aspects of Vishnu or Shiva.
