Condom Day tomorrow The 11th Condom Day will be observed on Saturday to educate people about the importance of use of condoms for birth spacing and disease prevention and create enabling environment to discuss condoms openly This year?s condom day would be observed with the theme of ?Proper Use of Condoms for Dual Protection?. The condom day has become a nationwide event with different communities, government agencies, NGOs and INGOs, marking it with different programmes. More than 40 organisations including government agencies, private and non-governmental national and international organisations and media will be participating in to mark the Condom Day in collaboration with communities and individuals across the country. Thousand of volunteers and development workers are expected reach its message to the community in need. Speaking at a press conference organised by Nepal Red Cross Society (NRCS), Director at the Department of Health Services Pitambar Aryal said that the day was for everyone, who have reached the reproductive age. The day aims to increase awareness among men in family planning, about HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted disease and create awareness among women about the importance of condom to protect them from STDs, HIV/AIDS and also birth control. Aryal said that the NCRS started celebrating the day in 1995 and that year it was celebrated in 35 districts reaching over 50,000 people. Now, the day is institutionalised as an annual festival on the first Saturday after Dashain and this year the message will be reached to about 500,000 people across the country. The country?s population has doubled in the last 30 years and at the present rate of 2.27 it will continue to grow. The total fertility rate in Nepal is currently 4.1 children per women. There are 62,000 estimated HIV infected people and the major route of transmission is heterosexual contact. Aryal said that increase in condom use could help to show population growth as well as prevent the transmission of disease. Tek Bahadur Dangi of the Family Health Division said that initially condoms were primarily taken as a means for family planning. He said in 1990-91 only 0.5 per cent to 0.6 per cent couples used condoms and as means for and it reached 3.2 per cent in 2001.

Thanks Jahid to bring up this topic. I had almost forgotten about the special days in Nepal. People can do simple search on Condom Day through Nepal Red Cross Society's website, or other organizations working on HIV/AIDS/STD awareness. I encourage abstinence, however, for those who can't control, please USE CONDOM, PROTECT YOURSELF AND YOUR FAMILY. Read a sad real life story at - http://www.geocities.com/parakhi2/suntali.pdf
