An open letter to the Prime minister Sher Bahadur Deuba





Dear Mr. Prime Minister,



As an observer of Nepali politics with a neutral stance on party politics, I am expressing my humble opinion from 12,000 miles distance .

My expression in many ways may be the representation of hundreds of thousands of frustrated Nepali and friends of Nepal living in and out side the country, whom sole interest in opining their voice is for a genuine peace in Nepal and a desire to see return of humanity in the country.

As you know, the continue violence in the country has not only taken over ten thousand lives, it has also destroyed the moral fiber of the country. No one has ever witnessed moral decline of such magnitude in the long history of this country (Nepal) before. If something is not done to stop this madness soon, not only we?re going to loose countless more lives, our existence as a country and our cultural identity as a Nepali, will be sadly lost for ever.

Therefore, you must act and act now, to bring peace in Nepal.

Fate has bestowed upon you as a leader of the country to bring peace and provide hope for millions of people. You have been given an opportunity, hardly ever granted to any other Nepali leader in the history of the country, to show the beacon of hope to millions of Nepali.

Great leaders are not born by birth; they are born by the event. There is no bigger event than this in hundreds of years of this country and you?re in a crossroad to be that very great leader. Among many characteristics, great leader requires being wise and they are defined by having courage; courage to challenge the most powerful and courage to sacrifice personal interest for a worthy cause. I believe you have both wisdom and courage and you?ll use those attributes for well being of Nepal and Nepali people.

About a month before you became Prime minister (2nd time), you had emailed a letter to the ?Nepali Diaspora for Peace? supporting your position to Kul Chandra Gautam?s, under secretary general of U.N, proposal for UN mediated/facilitated trilateral peace negotiation. However, after you became Prime minister, you have made clear through news media that you?re not in favor of UN mediation any more. What happened after you became Prime minister that you had to take hundred and eighty degree turn on such an important issue?

One of your advisors has explained your new position to be result of the external pressure. Especially, the pressure was coming from India and to a lesser degree from China. First of all, I must ask you ? Is that true? If not then why did you change your position?

However, if your answer is yes, I must say your decision was wrong and against Nepal and Nepali?s interest. Here is why I say that ?

I understand the political pressure, especially when that is coming from big and strong neighbor(s). As a nation, we must listen to our neighboring countries and accommodate their need as much as possible. However, we can?t afford to risk our own existence as a country and dream and hopes of our own people to keep our neighbors happy. We must not allow our future compromised to satisfy India or China?s foreign policy.



You, as a leader must be able to say no to those countries, who rather see their policy kept alive than our people.

If we continue to embark on this vicious path, who is to say how long are we going to last as a country? The issue at this junction is not how to keep India happy. The issue before you, as a leader of the country, how best to bring peace so that Nepal continue to exist as a country inhabited by your children and grand children and cherished by mine. Some of the people in India?s foreign ministry may see Nepal?s invitation of an international mediator as a wrong precedent for India?s interest in Kashmir. However, in long run, they too will accept the fact that the peace in Nepal is equally important for India?s overall interest, even more than Kashmir.

Therefore, Mr. Prime minister, please show your courage and help bring peace in Nepal by inviting third party (UN) mediation, even if that means making India temporarily unhappy. As you know, under the environment of distrust, negotiating peace by parties (Maoist, political party and the government) themselves if not impossible is very unlikely. Hence, third party mediation is the only hope for peace at this time.

Time is running out; therefore, you must not wait any longer. You must ask every national and international agencies, including UN to help initiate peace process today.

You have an opportunity of life time to change the destiny of the country and bring smile to the millions of Nepali people for generations come.

Is he the same Raghav who changed his name to Roger after he met that gori keti, whom he married later, of course to divorce her later to marry a girl from his village, Raghavpur, back home.

1. When Prithvi Narayan discarded some of the ethnic groups like dead flies and created the infamous "char jaat.." and called them "...pakhurays...", where was the nation's moral fibre connected to?

2. When Jangay massacred in Kot, and established oligarchy, did we feel the moral fibre of the nation?

3. Singhadurbar was turned into a worst womanising venue for many for many decades, using women to serve "kopra" for urinating, did the nation's fibre still maintain the connection?

4. When thousands of soliders were offered to recruit as merceneries by the Ranas and still continuing, where was the moral fibre of the nation?

5. When several of the Nepalis demanding democracy were openly killed during the Panchayat regime and no one was punished for these crimes, where were the keepers of the nation's moral fibre?

6. When there was a merciless killing of innocent people in Doramba last year by the Maoists, and then by the Army and no was brought to the book later, what is there to talk about the moral fibre?

7. When many of the ethnic groups were deliberately kept out of the mainstream and hardly anyone enjoying the government priveldge spoke against it, where is the nation's heart and moral fibre?

8. When it is mostly the poor people who have suffered the most due to Maoists movement, while the riches are still enjoying their loot, what is the justification of allowing the Maoists to continue their movement?

9. When over 50,000 of our chelis are lured to the brothels in India against their will, where is the moral fibre question hanging? In fact, everyone's head should hang in shame.

10. Where the leaders or so called conscience keepers of the nation have looted the country in the last so many years, is the talk of the moral fibre relevant?

I generally agree with the letter to the PM, but I am damn angry that the country is going to the hell and our leaders are not being held accountable. Nepalis killing Nepalis?? When will this stop?

Lastly, even if the Maoists movement had not torn apart the country, at some point, an ethnic strife was inevitable from the way the government has not changed its way of functioning since the Rana regime and the Panchayat days. Too bad, our social scientists and historians are not upto the mark to predict it in time.

I like what you have to say. What I am seeing is just plain denial by the people that deep down the problem exist of discrimination, racism, etc. Nothing changes even when people come to the US and the West. We have a deeply rooted issues. Our netas just made it worst. They took advantage of it in the name of people. Our number one enemy is politicians who ruined very little we have.

Really, AMMA KO KASAM, I didn't know about this real ROGER guy until I got a nasty missive from Mr. Indisguise here at Sajha above. It's a matter of pure co-incidence that the name-conversion story [RAGHAV to ROGER ] matches with the real name conversion story [SURAJ to RAGAV], of SURAJ. It's not only nepalese everybody does. Like my Taiwanese friend's wife's name is LING JING, after she came here her name became - LILY, NUANUA became Elizabeth and JING something became JANE. Its a common thing, so don't have to raise your bristles in anger OK.
