I have green card and I am in Nepal since 4 months. I don't think this corona virus thing is going to be over soon.

Is it safe? I’m not sure. You never know what immigration folks could be smoking. Before Corona hit hard, they were acting tremendously nasty. I agree with Nas! They might give u break for Atleast 1 year. It’s all depends upon your evidences n explaining situations at port of entry. Other option will be to apply for return permit, USCIS has shifted to emergency cases only; wait until May around how it looks.I would message on their Facebook. You won’t believe I have get done so many govt things thru messenger.

Do not stay more than 6 months if you have a plan to get the citizenship.

“Continuous residence” means that the applicant has maintained residence within the United States for the required period of time shown above.

Extended absences outside of the U.S. may disrupt an applicant’s continuous residence.

Absences of more than six months but less than one year may disrupt an applicant’s continuous residence unless the applicant can prove otherwise, (see legal basis, see policy manual)
Absences in excess of one year (PDF, 667 KB) or more may disrupt an applicant’s continuous residence, (see legal basis, see policy manual)

@ Tutepani I’m just curious.
Absences of more than six months but less than one year may disrupt an applicant’s continuous residence unless the applicant can prove otherwise- is not pandemics considered otherwise, which is beyond the control of petitioner. I think less than 6 months is no issue, more than 6 months, they might give a break with valid reason such as medical, family issues. More than year, is uncertain. They might ended up putting on a return flight if a person don’t have valid reason and no re entry permit.

You'll be fine. I stayed in Nepal for 9 months while on GC. I did it again (10 months) and that is when I was grilled by border patrol. I had a valid reason, though and they advised me to apply for reentry-permit (that's valid for 2 years) if I had plans of longer stays.

Don't spend more than 6 months at a time if you have plans to apply for citizenship as soon as you're normally eligible as it will reset eligibility.
