"However, with the advent of Nepali students in the 80s and locals in the mid 90s, the school began losing its old world charm as the 'exclusivity' got lost through the abundant interation within the local community. I agree that SPS today is not half as good as it was in the 70s but at least the respect that was attained then still remains outside the small pond, that is Darjeeling."

Do you remember St. Andrews - the younger brood of the Paulites was then headed by a local. All you "Nepalese" guys can proudly recite Nepalese poems because of the excellent LOCAL Nepalese teachers you had...yes, Mr. Lama was a Jalapahar native from that small pond. The so-called exclusivity got lost not because locals can now afford St. Paul's - that was still a high cry - it got lost because it was always trying to be mysterious and aloof. :) which it really wasn't. No offense there either - I was just being plain honest. And..those rowdies from that snooker place were LOCALS :) from that pond - now the pond thing?? YES I TAKE OFFENSE.

Bhasker Pradhan - you reading and smiling? :) sorry only SOME paulites had what it takes and obviously the younger batches failed to live up to those eagle nest days.

o sgy!!! tumbull pani padheyko? know you had a thing for sentryja but...tumbull chai thaha thiyena... and k rey???? hami inglish iskool padney haru bhayenkar bhako rey? afu chaini?? walking talking dictionary! not my words....lilo's!

It is nice to see this thread regarding Darj Distict schools.
I finished my ICSE in 1993....from the famous Mount Hermon.
I agree that we sucked in sports. I heard that the the 1995-96 batches did well in sports.
One of the main reasons being that we were co-ed, compared to SAS, NP, SP, GMS who had only boys.
Our batch was really "padante" compared to the ICSE results of the earlier batches .. ours made history as the best result..we had 3 students that plugged the ICSE.

I think NP had the over all

One of the students who plugged is getting a law degree from the US..guff jasto lagcha..but that's what I heard..

Interesting stuff from sajhayog.

Darj Rocks!!

SAMASARA
I would have loved to see guys of your time come to SAS but unfortunately the guys that came in our time looked like they came from a different pole. Cuz SPS was always in the running for the MOST DISCIPLINED SCHOOL in the Golden Jublliee Tournament that we had and as far as i can remember their own only competitor for that award was Saptashree Gyanpeeth. Like you said earlier, yu guys used to get chided by your authorities when you returned home. Maybe following batches were made well aware of how they should behave going into the tournament. Just my guess for the radical change.HAHA

Well we guys always regarded your school as an "Elite school" which had so strict rules that automatically made the students well disciplined. And your guys more often than not had ICSE toppers. These were reasons enough for we guys to consider SPS as Padnante. Haha and for the SHORT SHORTS..whenever SPS came to play basketball they had really short shorts. everytime i see that Tmobile ad that show DWade forced by Barkley to see the Late Eighties Basketball match with Barkley adorning little shorts, it reminds me of SPS.

GREENFLY
How could I forget Mt Hermon's School.
That very school which was quite a competitor to SAS in soccer, Basketball, and a serious foe in Swimming. Your skool sports had the luxury of this guys of THAI origin that made SAS's sports life not so easy.
I reckon yu guys were like the DGH of Darjeeling for the sole reason of being Coed.
BTW IF I AM NOT MISTAKEN we were sometimes confused for the same school by the nature of our flags which were just abt the same COLORS OF BLUE AND WHITE

SAMBHU
I do not know which badge you are but at our time SXS were better in Junior basketball with players like Manish than the senior team.

AVIATOR
Yah really St George's School
we really thought of them as so chippu huge guys..we were physically afraid of them..and really played rough soccer.. anyway i as border did not get ample chance to visit many schools but I did go to St George's once for their School day and found people in Pedong friendlier than those in KPG.

I just guessed you would know Manish if you were somewhere around that badge. hehe you were actually classmates..

BTW guys in Himali were really druggist and their long indoor corridors were so scary. I was little then and these bigger bros would only tell bhoot ko stories that would make my neendra kharab.
they used to play basketball like rugby
i would recommend any director himali boarding school for the shooting of a horror/thriller/slasher movie

Another Hermonite here!!!

Greenfly..If i'm correct you must be from the Hammer's batch.... i was there when we won the burns Shield (swimming..boys class 10 under competition) after a long time..
If my memory serves me right, we didn't get to take the Shield home..I wonder why!!!! This was held in SAS..
Mount hermon was an all round school as far as i'm concerned..

What i miss the most about my school days were the bunking trips to the local cafeterias/eating joints... and not to forget the smoking and drinking trip too...

Hahahaha Suna, your analysis cracked me up BIG TIME!! Hahahah You're saying that "it (exclusiveness) got lost because SPS was always trying to be mysterious and aloof"…hahahah OK, for 17 decades we remained "mysterious and aloof" and it was THEN that SPS was refered to as "The Eton of the East" (Why would we even be compared to Eton College if we were JUST ANOTHER LOCAL school??). It was THEN that a Rector at SPS was awarded an OBE for his services to SPS. It was THEN that we produced some of the nation's top leaders in defense and commerce...I can give you a hundered other examples...We were Vegas then: "What happened in SPS, stayed at SPS!!" No outsiders needed to know what went on in there. It was ONLY IN THE LAST 2-3 DECADES when intermingling with the other schools and the Nepalese and Darjeeling community began that the school lost its charm of being "aloof and mysterious" (apologies for the constant repitition) and took a nose dive towards hell. Even a minor fight between 2 boys (which is so common in all the schools I know) would make news in the local papers. SPS boys in town wearing "fancy clothes"?? Next day, my local guardians are ballistic in letting me know. SPS guy in town with a girl?? "Hell what has happened to the Paulites", they'd say. BTW, in Ktm during my vacation, my boys and I went to local schools with whatever we had in hand if any of them had beef there and NO LOCALS or ANY MEDIA gave a damn!! See, what I'm getting at here is that "kids will be kids" and the older Darjeeling locals always expected the Paulites to behave like elderly married gentlemen (or priests) as they had never known anything about Paulites except the folklore!!

Also, SPS taught me jack in Nepali. I learnt it at home and the tution classes that I took during vacation. How can you expect that our Nepali be good when we could only speak it for 40 minutes of the day during class?? That too, we just listened to the teacher read! I remember those days of topping my class in all the subjects but failing or "just" passing in Nepali. Hahaha We caught up with our sleep during Nepali class! I felt, as long as I could read, write and comprehend Nepali literature, that’s all I would need. And here I am today, I feel with no Nepali grammar/speaking problems at all.

Hahaha The only Mr. Lama from Jalapahar at the Primary section at SPS was our head caterer (and he had been there for 2-3 decades already). He certainly did not head us (It was always the Rector's wife who headed the Primary guys). And St. Andrew's was LONG gone when I attended SPS….In case you're wondering, for me, NYC is a SMALL POND too if I'm talking about the reputation of a school/university here whose fame and recognition transcends its man-made boundaries: e.g: NYU, Columbia, etc. I see no offense in calling any man-made city a small pond and Darj is no exception as SPS was physically in that very pond too!!

BTW, pls quit making those smiley faces if you'd taken offense to my posts…It just makes no sense. Kinda confused me here. hahaha

Sahayog, hahah that DWade commercial was mad funny...During the late 90s, all schools including SAS wore shorts like dat (hawaldaar kattus were in vogue then)!! Yeah, during our time, we were made a prime example of what not to be by the Rector for our escapades at SAS. In our minds, all 20 of us cursed your principal, Fr. Paul after the sound thrashing we got from our Rector!! hahahahahah

kina timilai wrong prove garyo bhannera?? I really could go on debating about the facts instead of aru bata sunai ko kura haru. hahahah FYI, I'm a historian who sticks to facts unlike peeps who just go about blabbering about something they heard from someone who knew someone else's cousin's brother-in-law's ousin who went there!! hahhaha I'd reckon that people stick to topics which they know about and researched on thoroughly and SPS history is my FORTE!! Ciao for now! Laterzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz!

Hey Tiger_daju,
Yeh I am from the Hammerz batch. Ur thread name does remind me of tiger daju. I do go to the MH website and read some of the thread there and occasionally share my thoughts too. You must me junior to me. Do you know Pabitra Tuladhar, Tseten, dont remember the rest? I heard Faddu was the Principal there...Jhaure vice Princi re.

Anyway, nice to read what everyone has to say.

I got some pix from the last snow in Darj. One of my friends in Darj said the road to darj was packed with cars coming from Siliguri. It took more than 10 hrs to get to Darj....6 inches of snow is quite a lot for darj.

Hariyo jhinga ra baag dai, my elder sis was at MH too during the 80s and early 90s. She was in Knowles and it was then that Gardner had taken over from Johnson as principal. A lot of my cousins and friends from Nepal went there too. BTW, I always envied the guys there...I wished SPS was co-ed everytime I came to your school!! hahaha
