In a recent radio show organized by BBC Nepali Sewa, transmitted today (May 17, 2009), Dr. Babu Ram Bhattrai sait he "has a dream of making Nepal atleast like USA or Europe in next 15/ 20 years.". Shouldn't we work to fulfil his dream?

Sidster, we are sorry to hear that your father got a trashing from the army in 2046. That’s wrong and no one can condone that sort of behaviour - my own brother was beaten up by a couple of drunk army officers and nothing happened to them. But none of this justifies your line of thinking that Baburam is a good terrorist. That line of thinking is as flawed as putting the army on the same pedestal as these Maoist terrorists. It’s alright to be angry with the army, but please try to be a little more objective and not take things so personally.

When King G finally kicked all the politicians i had a great hope. I had hoped King G to be more business minded and progress minded than lazy King Birendra and i was really happy that he jailed all the crooked politicians once and for all. But as soon as he came to power his first focus was to print his fat face on the Rupees Note and to transfer all Birendra's property in his name and he was doing this being backed by Nalayak Nepal Army.

Let me say this again, i did not call Baburam a good terrorist. I called him a good finance minister compared to other finance minsters nepal had in the past.

I am not justifying that terrorists are better because army is bad. I do not have any political alliance in Nepal. In US i like honest liberals and honest libertarians.  If any of you are able to see the whole picture of nepal without any politically affiliated glasses you will see them all the same.

Baburam has practiced terrorism to put his agenda to the people. He just happened to be good at what he did with finance ministry. Thats all. Have you ever viewed arts done by the criminals in Jail. Its sort of like that. Its unfortunate to nepal that the one who hadled the finance ministry the best had to be the terrorist and the others didnt even have the capability of what baburam did.

The other point is Nepal Army is a product of " Master and Slave" culture. The career starts from " washing boss's wives Peticoats" When the Peticoat washer gets promoted he gets his own peticoat washer. That peticoat washing culture is everywhere in Nepal Army. The same Peticoat washer officer had come to my Dad's office in 2046 to thrash him. Apparently some people from his office were talking about 2046 revolution out in the street and the Peticoat washer came to his office and called him by names, and addressed him by Ta, and talai, I was in the office at that time...and could never understand what my dad could have done wrong at that time but now i fully understand what Nepal Army is and what its made up of.

The point to be made is that NA is not as good as what people try to portray it. Its a backward and corrupt organization. Just because they are punishing the terrorists does not make them any clean. Sidster - this is not about the army. This strand is about that terrorist Baburam. The army is capable of being reformed; terrorist on the other hand deserve liquidation. As for this relatively good or bad terrorist verbiage one comes across, there is no such thing. Terrorist are bad full stop and there is no way out for them. Sri Lanka has led the way in our region and with Maoist antics increasing in India, the Nepali version are setting themselves up. In the end it does not matter how or who finishes them off. You are right there is a price to pay for this war on terrorism, but there is no other choice. Terrorism needs to be defeated no matter where it raises its ugly head. As usual Nepal is playing catch up. But they will get there.

I hope so too Peter, i hope that terrorism would go away and we will have honest people running Nepal in near future.

very interesting discussion going on here. well, if u r to b neutral without any affiliation to any ideology or institution, nepal army indeed outranks maoists in terms of human rights violation which has been throroughly justified by many which is just hypocracy. so, here i should say i stand with sidster. n i cum from strong military family background, my many relatives serves in various ranks in nepal army from colonel to corporal n gurkha regiments. everyone r well aware of maoists atrocities but it is just mad to justify gross human rights violation that inccludes genocides and tortures from nepal army in the name of national interest or king. it was so severe that it nearly cost them UN peace mission which is also lucrative source of income for personnels as well as whole institution n nation. indeed they did prevent maoists from full military takeover but the situation analysis suggets they were in stalemate position with neither side able to break through n rout each other which means war could hav escalated further to the point either with relsult that of sri lanka or that of cuba in unknown period of time. the core mantra of soldiering r discipline n professionalism which nepal army lacks to b frank, infact it lacks any incentives to attribute such traits in its ranks n files.

 

the incidents as in pilli where they suffered huge casaulties showed the incompetency of commander who chose to run away from the battlefield n save his life by hiding in a cave rather than commanding his man n fighting the batlle together. later in a report they stated 'due to the failure of rifle, INSAS' to which even my bro who is major in nepal army said 'nachna najanne agan tedho'(an example). well, sorry folks to bore u but just putting my personal thoughts that nepal army did fail in its operation to counter insurgency n not just beating hollow pride. they were not cable in eliminating rag tags maoists who were armed with improvised weaponry to watever availble n even thier intel couldnt  figure out 4-5 thousand guirella fighters which was only recently made public in prachandas speech. various retired generals of nepal army has accepted thier inept at dealing insurgents, ie they lacked enough competency, expereince, knowledge n resources. formation of ranger battallions with american help n strenghtning 11 brigade which is also an air force of nepal army were key elements in keeping maoists guerellas at bay.

 

currently army n police both r going through massive reform, it takes time, they r getting modernized n professional, just check out the gears of riot police n regular army infantry, i should say they look more modern, professional n smarter than at least indians(being superficial). my conclusion is both r equally responsible n personally i wont justify one to another for thier cause n interests.

n i dont use the word terrorist, it was political levearge to attain military hardwares n supports from concerend nations mainly india, US n Uk. army themsleves prefer to use the word 'insurgents' rather than terrorist n above all they too r our nepalese folks ragardless of thier ideology  n extreme measure taken to justify it.

Both of these organization are not lesser of a Human Rights violators than the other. I remember the word used before George Bush's era was "insurgents" but George pretty much made it a standard to call them "terrorists". So now the common word anyone who goes against the government with weapon is a terrorist.

About YCL: YCL has not done anything productive or creative for me to say anything good about them. They are there to impose Maoists agendas by force and intimiditaion to ordinary people. They are there to protect their Master's needs in the street. There is no difference between YCL, Youth Force, and Hindu Sena, and Nepal Biiddharthi Sangh.

About Baburam calling Stock Exchange a "Juwaghar" is something i agree with. Barack Obama had called Walstreet something to the same line and i agreed with that. Trust me its a Juwaghar and i have lost some money in it too  : )

This is about what Maoists are: terrorists. Terrorism has no nationality. That they happen to come from Nepal is no excuse for not giving them their just desserts. This is not about the army and how many of one’s relatives are employed by the institution or about their competency. With the destructive influences of the monarchy removed, the army, even with its current imperfections, is certainly capable of taking them on and defeating them à la the LTTE in Sri Lanka. In our region, the tide is slowly turning against this menace and our neighbours to the North and South both have serious terrorism issues of their own. Time and again, it’s been shown that terrorists do not change their goals even if they make tactical adjustments every now and then. So why kid ourselves about this? The only logical outcome is their elimination, the sooner the better. In the case of Nepal, this will have both an external and an internal component. That’s just the way it is. Again, in the end it doesn’t matter how it happens, but that it does happen. The next phase will be costly, long and arduous, but it will be worth it in the end. The other alternatives have been tried and they have not worked.

I would like to think that one terrorist will definitely wipe out the next terrorist. Be it LTTE way or Cuban way. Or may be we will become Afganistan where not even all super powers put together are able to wipe out the terrorism from the country.

History is witness how Girija and its revolution of Hijacking airplanes/robbing banks and UML's chopping off people's head was suppressed by King and its Army. History is also witness on how the King KG backed by 100K Army force was defeated by all party led revolution without a voilence. It is interesting how things changed. Who would have thought that 100 people who started arms terrorism 10 years ago were  going to be responsible for secularism and republic Nepal 10 years later. It was so unpredictable. The next war is between PLA and NA and one of the terrorist is certain to be wiped out or submissed.

At the end of certain cycle one terrorist will keep its dominance until another form of terrorism is formed. India has been facing terrorism since their indepedence and has not been able to eliminate it. Almost each state has some sort of terrorism going on. Hopefully ours wont be that long.

Sidster – I share your sentiments: yes, let’s hope terrorism will not last long in Nepal, one way or the other. But let’s face it, these Maoist terrorist have hit their zenith – it’s all downhill from now on.

That they beat up your father certainly explains your prejudices about the army, but calling them terrorist and putting them at par with the Maoists is just plain wrong. Thankfully, the pieces are coming together and as I said earlier, it’s only a question of time before these Maoist terrorists get their just desserts. The wheels are in motion and somehow don’t think that even the babu jis will be so forgiving this time around.  And yes, I dare say, they will keep your favourite terrorist, Baburam, to the last as no doubt they have other uses for him in this endeavour – no, he’s not going to be a “Karuna”; he’s too much of lightweight for that.
