I never protracted my stay all the way to Icse, I was in DGH only for a couple of years - 1984/85, had I been there enough, I'd have been a batch of 89. Just ask him if he knows couple of koirala females, a rayamajhi fella, a Thapa from dharan and two Ukyab Kids from baneshwor. We all were contemporaries. Also, just inquire him if he knows Murray or Owl...those nicknames are enough to ring a bell.

Samsara, i went to Xaviers, Sikkim & i'm a GIRL. Though boys are of no interest to me, don't even mistake me as a lesbian.
Girls frm LC were really bitchy[ not trying to generalize but frm the ones i knew] SJC gals had this attitude problem, Himali- kurseong were all spoilt , NP boys were good in studies , Rockville was full of monkies (donkies also), DGH was haunted (my brother was in DGH)& SAS boys had white legs , but never got to know a paulite........

Aviator, how could you not know a Paulite? The crem de la crem out there...All I can say with remorse is that you missed out! LOL ;D :D :D

ya St. Xavier's, Pakyong( Even xaviers was haunted , midst of the night some1 used to walk around our dormitory tyo pani pencil heel shoes lagayera u know....tak..tak.....tak.........it used to scare the hell out of us and we used to go toilet in groups & slept together by combining beds & paid fines in the morning 'coz sleeping together was not allowed .......and sisters always accused us of being lesbians....so funny k)
suna r u frm LC? I remember LC gals using YA at the end of every sentence they spoke....
Actually few gals had BF'S frm NP and they were really into studies. And samsara , none of the gals had BF frm Paul's so didn't get to know any.........

if yu studied in Xavier's Pakyong..and yu passed ICSE from 1999-2003..yu may know this fella who made quite an impression as a basketball player in SAS..his name was Manish..i still remember he was the great competitor of our very own Kunga Gurung ..i have never visited Xavier's Pakyong though..!!$$
yeah i think NP boys not that good in studies either ..Paulites were better..i dunno we hostellers used to think that way...

haaha and yu reminded me of my old skool ..HImali boarding school...i was a kid then when me and my cousin studied there for 3 years before we went to SAS for Admission test ..i passed and my bro did not ..i consider HBS haunted more than DGH

hehe - Samsara seems to be stuck on this.....a relative of mine went to SPS back in the days when they had just goras and a few indians...he was a total misfit in life in Kathmandu. Nepali khattam, mentality was way off your regulars of the early 60s (smart mind you but...). I think it was the attitude of I am so much better than the rest that got him stuck in life.

Going to SPS was not such a big deal with some locals in Darjeeling. SPS was just another school. LC always got the best points in ICSE, NP faltered, MOunties was an all-rounder school and I don't know how SPS fared. Thats what you get for being wayyyyyyyyyyy up there - in Jalapahar!!!! :)

Sahayog, SPS as "Padhante, Short shorts"?? I thought my batch left the worst impression on the SAS peeps during the Golden Jubilee. hahaha Like I told you earlier, it was so bad that "Somewhere along the line, it was mentioned that Paulites behaved worse than the Rockville guys!!" Anyway, shorts were only for the primary school guys, so I have no clue what you are talking about.

For me, here is the breakdown analysis of each school that I heard about/visited/played sports against. This is all back in the mid to late 90's:


DARJEELING:


St. Paul's: The immaculate ones: Naughty as hell but gave respect where/when due to seniors and masters. Also, excelled in cricket, hockey, athletics, elocution/dramatics/debates and academics (but sucked big time in basket-ball and soccer). The local girls loved us!!
Loreto Convent: No doubt that Paulites loved LC chicks!! We'd give our right arm to attend the fete there! However, once we got there, we were all tongue-tied which made them feel that we were snobs! Any LCites reading this, pls note that Paulites were just a lil too shy and scared of rejection...They loved you all!!
LC College: These were the girls who we partied with. Many a Paulites got their first kiss from them. Ahhh...memories. Wonder what has become of the girls that my frineds and I hung out with.
North Point: Jaani Dushman (since inception). These guys always embarassed us in soccer and basket-ball. The only reason we stood up for the ridicule was the ride to the bazaar where we could sneak off to eat momos (selling our pride for momos that were REALLY worth it! hahah). However, during my Senior years, a large number of North Pointers came into SP after ICSE. Because of this, it seems that the rivalry is slowing fading out.
Mount Hermon: They were a school who were envied because they were co-ed. Paulites wished we could experience what the guys had there (even though they had the worst sports teams and academic results). BTW, loved the ham they served to the visiting teams after any sporting events in their basement dining hall!!
VVA: Local school with really rowdy looking guys...FYI, I went to primary school with Chakre Milan who later went here back in the 80s! These guys had phenomenal volley-ball players (they were never heard of in other sports).
BSMI: Local School with really rowdy looking guys again. I went there for the 2nd Language Elocution and someone was smoking pot next to the auditorium...We could all smell it inside! hahaha The Paulites were loving it!!
St. Roberts: hardly ever saw anyone from that school around. They probably had their own exclusive hang out spots.
CST: Some of the girls here were hot. I remember some of my dhoti friends had Tibetan girl-friends from this school. They were a few girls from here who were at Chowrasta 24/7.


KURSEONG:


Goethal's: Another NP who kicked our backside in soccer when we were juniors. Went for their school play which was amusing for us Paulites because the narrator spoke in a typical Nepali accent that was so friggin hard to understand. Anyway, we always though the guys in this school were gay as we saw one guy forcing a kiss from anothe during the 4'10" tournament!!
Himali: Local school with Killer volleyball players...the guys looked rowdy too. A cousin of mine went there and always got into fights with the locals there. We took care of those guys when they came to Ktm.
St. Helen's: Only saw them at the Inter School Athletics...But we stuck to cheering for the LCites!

KALIMPONG:


SAS: Nice extra-curricular facilities with REALLY bad food! And the canteen looked like a chicken-coop. However, really good basket-ball players and among the better soccer teams. The shool was compartively new (50 yrs) and it was still garnering PRship. BTW, the guys only taked about Levis and Dr. Marten's there. Anytime, us Paulites walked by, they'd whisper to each other, "look at their Levis/CAT/Doc Marts, etc." They, like us were very fashion conscious.
DHG: Never knew anyone beside my distant relatives there. However, hung out with a few guys in Ktm and these guys took narcotics like it was a snack. A few Tibetan girls there were worth checking out. BTW, hated the school when we lost to them at the SAS' Golden Jubilee soccer (which the local refs GAVE to them).
St. Helen's: Heard the hype that it had the best looking chicks then but since I had no reason to go there or even visit K'pong, couldn't really find out.
Rockville: The rowdiest guys as I was told. Saw them at the B'ball tourney and they looked rough, local and rowdy indeed. However, as I said earlier, "it was mentioned that Paulites behaved worse than the Rockville guys!!" hahah Us Paulites were a ridicule then!!
St. Philomena's: These girls could run like horses. I remember the Inter School Athletics where they beat our beloved LCites in nearly all the events. Whats more, they ran bare-foot!! These were strong girls, man!!!



I may have missed your school. Please forgive my arrogance as I can't remember any other institutions that Paulites dealt with. You can go ahead, add and post your school that I unintentionally missed. Thanks

Hey Aviator, yes...Philomena girls were fast as hell!! There was no competition to them in the races! However, they stopped attending the events during my late junior/senior years.

BTW, Xavier's Pakyong: All I remembered during the SAS tournament was that these guys were real good ball players. SAS as always managed to win the tourney and both Xaviers and NP were left pissed! They always blamed foul-play. hahah And us, Paulites could care less as basket-ball was just an excuse for us to get some vacation time in K'pong! hahaha

Suna, my anthropology professor at uni once said something SIMILAR like this, "if you ain't proud of your culture, traditions and heritage then you just ain't happy as you really don't associate yourself with anything in your life!"

Yes, SPS was JUST ANOTHER SCHOOL that was set aloof! We maintained an aura of our own totally cut off from the rest of the world that made our 'exclusivity' even more prominent. However, during my days there, I always felt that we were just another local school. It was only after my ICSE I realized how much weight the SPS name had. A similar light when a friend of mine who attended Yale said that she felt no different at all. It was as though she was attending any regular college out there. But going out into the real world, she felt she garnered a different respect...I still remember the Delhi college admission days where I got into Stephens but changed my mind to follow the band-wagon into the US.

After I got here, I researched more about SPS' history which I had overlooked during my entire stay there. Tradition and history has been perfectly preserved there and also read about how exclusive the "Eton of The East" was. I never knew it back then but, the school, I found out, was made only for the kids of the highest imperial officers (but later changed with the times...Now if you can pay for it and pass the admissions, you get in). BTW, name any other school in the world where the Rector is awarded an OBE (Order of the British Empire) for his services to the school? Rector Gibbs was given that for his services to St. Paul's during the 70's/80's. That puts him at par with The Beatles in the national order.

Also, your relative (god bless him) is just another individual. Can't go around blaming the whole system, can you? Our list of prominent OPs around the world is breath-taking. Although there will be a few misfits, the majority of them have surpassed average well-to-do folks. And yes, I have been told by many about the arrogance of Paulites but isn't that how you should be if you are to lead. To follow orders you need to be the "yes" guy that everyone likes, but to lead, there has to be values and beliefs that need to be implemented firmly with no compromise...And SPS taught us that.

However, with the advent of Nepali students in the 80s and locals in the mid 90s, the school began losing its old world charm as the 'exclusivity' got lost through the abundant interation within the local community. I agree that SPS today is not half as good as it was in the 70s but at least the respect that was attained then still remains outside the small pond, that is Darjeeling.

Suna, Please do not see this as a disrespect as I was only trying to let you know how I derived my thought process. You are entitled to your own beliefs...Never did I belittle LC. All I did was glorify the institution that nurtured me for 10 years. I truly wouldn't change one bit of my association with this fine institution.

Damn sgy, how could I've forgotten Turnbull...During my winter-breaks I played cricket with my friends in the ground below Turnbull and the all girls'school (forgot the name). A neighbor of mine used to study at there and I still remember him taking around Rs. 12 to school for his monthly fees!! BTW, these guys here were the REAL rowdies. Back then, my local friends who I hung out with (at the dark and dreary crack-house looking snooker place above Rink) went to the Open school and Turnbull...A sharp contrast in the way they carried themselves from Paulites but at heart, they were perfect gentle-men!! I wonder how they're all doing as I haven't heard from them for ages.
