Murder Most Royal
Saturday 1 October @ 23:10CET

Crown Prince Dipendra of Nepal ? ?Dippy? to his Eton chums ? had a difficult childhood by all accounts. His mother ruled him with a will of iron. Close friend Gautam Rana recalls: ?The crown Prince had very low self-esteem. His mother was always criticising him. She said she had to be strict with him, for one day he would be King. But she was a perfectionist ? she never let him be a child.? His father the King, an old Etonian himself, sent Dippy to the English public school Eton. Sixteen is a difficult age for any boy to be thrown into an alien environment, but Dippy used his karate skills to protect young Will Stonor from the school bullies, and the two were soon firm friends. It was at a drinks party at Stonor?s family home that Dippy was first introduced to Devyani Rana, the daughter of a Nepalese politician and an Indian Maharani, who immediately bewitched the sixth-former. He bombarded her with telephone calls ? to no avail. He knew even then that Devyani?s resistance was the least of his worries.

Devyani did not accept Dippy?s advances at first; but the pair became friends and, slowly, Devyani fell in love. The couple spent all their time together and surrounded themselves by people who told them what they wanted to hear ? that they would be allowed to marry, and that they would one day be King and Queen of Nepal.

In reality, Dippy?s mother had made it clear to her teenage son that he was already betrothed to a well-born Nepalese girl, Supriya Shah.

The conflict between the Queen and her disobedient son was confined to Palace whispers, until June 1st, 2001, when the Nepali Times made Dippy?s private shame public. The Queen, it said, was blocking the Crown Prince?s choice of bride. Dippy?s humiliation and anger festered until, that evening, dressed in military uniform and with weapons from the royal armoury, he burst into a family gathering and shot his father in the head. The attack was no outburst of drunken rage, but a premeditated attack ? the few royals who survived the massacre have since described the way in which Dippy fired at everyone, and then kicked the bodies to make sure they were dead, before shooting himself.

Now, of course, everyone admits that Dippy had always had a dark side. That he drank too much, drove too fast, and had an unhealthy obsession with guns. But no one could have predicted the events of that fateful night, or the turmoil into which the country would be thrown. The public didn?t know what to believe ? or rather, the last thing that they wanted to believe was the truth. A military coup, a Maoist attack ? any other explanation was preferable. How could they have lived with such a terrible killer in the midst and never have known? This documentary recounts the events, from massacre to royal funeral procession, and tells the story of a volatile personality who was pushed too far.

Mahisasur

Who will ask you anyways??
The way you are replying suggests that you are loyalist to Gyanee and Parase.

All I see in your posts are bunch excuses, bunch of lies!! All you are doing is following the blind media.

And you are talkin bout those Gorakh talkin. Yeah when Paras was chasing Gorakh out of everest casino he was screaming, "Mero sasura marne, yehi ho." How about that??

Another thing that I want to address is the building where the massacre accured!! When everyone suggested that, that building should be kept in memory of the late king, it was demolished within 3 months. That building had too much of evidence!!
What do you have to say to that.....

I don't know your back ground but yeah I'm been in to military academy as well and I support the things ocean said earlier.

peace

Here is why Deependra was not a killer....I was never a government employee in Nepal nor an army personnel but went to school with Deependra, Paras and Nirajan..

Read the following judge your self. This proves that Deependra was not a killer.

The present belief of the public to support this argument is as follows; however, no any international news is covering this version of public thinking.
1. On friday he was at fresh and exciting mood while he visited the sports complex at Satdobato till 5:00 PM. He has encouraged the officials for the good work, and promised to come the next day 2 hour before the oficial time.No body has feeled any kind of stress and abnormality at that evening with Deependra.
2. The firing is done so severely that, the body of queen is divided to 2 piece. Her face and head was completely damaged. So there was mask instead of her face and head. Nirajan is believed to have 30 to 40 bullets while trying to save his father king birendra. The bullet is shot at central front pallet (nidhar ko tika lagaune thau najikai) to king Birendra, and almost other member's head. This indicate the shooter is professional sharp shooter.
3. The number of bullet fired is in such a huge quantity, that a single person can not solely fire so many bullet in such a short period where no other guards could protect that incident.
4. Deependra has several bullets (around 30) on his backside, some
penetrating his liver and lung, rather than his head (where suisider is believed to shot self). People think, Deependra tried to escape from the incident but finally attacked to sever injury.
5. The body of Shanti Singh was found on garden rather than the dinner room, so there may be chances of killing running after them who tried to escape.
6. Deependra has left the dinner room around 7:30, when he came back around 9:30, all other were killed already, he tried to escape, but he was shot dead. That is why he has many bullets on his back.
7. Dhirendra is not holding the royal post. In that evening, even
Dhirendra (who is declared dead yesterday) was attending the dinner, why Gyanendra was abscent?
8. The first person to come out from the palace after the incident was Paras, who also attended the dinner, but has no single hurt, how that happened?
9. In the beginning, Paras was said staying out of country, but later, not attending the dinner but in Soaltee Casino, some said not in Soaltee, but in Babylone Discotheque, later confirmed to be present in the dinner. Why so many different information circulated?
10. In that evening, 10 cooks and several other Royal worker were serving the dinner program, where they have gone? No single cook has returned to their home, neither they had made telephone call to there family members.
11. Several famous doctors, including Dr. Upendra Devkota, were taken to Chauni Barek, but they are not making any communication to family members. Are the doctors also in danger of another round of massacre?
12. Several Royal army official has not come to home since friday and has not informed to their families. If the families make inquiries, then the reply is that, they are send to foreign countries for treatement. Now the family members are worrying about the masacre of these army officials too, including ADCs of dead Royal members.
13. One helicopter has fled from Palace on friday night around 10:30 PM straight very high and then went to unknown direction with all light off. The people had seen and heard the sound of that, where that helicopter has gone, and who was inside that?
14. Several public people has heard about the incident around 10:00 - 10:30 PM of friday night, but the prime-minister Girija was informed about this only at 1:30 AM (some 4 - 5 hours later than the accident), why?
15. No postmartem was conducted on the dead royal bodies, why? The government had taken VICERA for investigation, while Madan Bhandari was dead. Why they did not do this for king and his family?
16. Why funeral process is conducted immediately, they poured water from tanker to flow cleaner water in Bagmati, and the structures were made temporarily.
17. Even the dead bodies were not handled with respect. There was no body to remove flies on the face of king. The dead body were kept on open ground without any arrangement. Whereas, the dead body of Babuchiri Sherpa was well protected and kept open for public respect for 5 days.
18. Why none of the foreign state heads and their representatives were allowed to take part? Even the notice for the higher governmental officers were issued very stupidly. The notice to attend at 3:00 PM the funeral spot with specified dresses was issued only at 3:10. Is is possible to reach at the spot at 3:00 hearing the notice at 3:10? Has every higher officers prepared the funeral dresses before the notice? otherwise how they could reach to the funeral spot immediately with specified dress?
19. Why the number of bullets were not allowed to count from the dead bodies of royal members?
20. Royal members are engaged with more than one women since long ahead, and that is not assumed as a critical issue. They can keep many wives in the form of Lyaite, byaite etc. So one external women can not be cause to death of dozens of very very important members of family and nation.
21. None of nepali has heard the fantastic story of love affairs of Deependra, but now the famous news agencies are trying to blame Divyani Rana as the cause of Royal members' masacre. Who has thought about her personal life afterward?
22. Why Dr. Rajeeb Shahi and Helen Shah are silent on these issue? It is heard that army official denied to conduct investigation, when senior police officer has proposed for that on Satureday, why?
23. Why all the international news agencies are displaying the photograph of mustachioed Deependra (with his darhi), to make an impression of bad person?
24. On the funeral of Birendra and Aisworya, Paras was not quite. His hand, foot, mouth was moving in some special ways, and many people has tried to describe ideas in his brain at that moment. Can someone behave in such a way, while his almost all family members were murdered? Can a person, who has seen the live death of several family members, with flow of blood from the all parts of body in a single room and their pain, grief movement etc, stand in such a smily and fresh manner to the public?
25. Deependra had not taken alcohol on friday evening. He never takes alcohol when he joins the dinner program with his father. He is well-known for his super respect to his father. How such person can kill his parents? These all questions and information may be useful to understand Deependra is not the killer.

This topic always fascinates me. I only try to understand people, and- why different people form such drastically opposite opinions of the same incident- which none of us witnessed. Are age/education/nata-gota/socio-economic situation/location/political association/ethnic identity/profession and what not contributing factors to form opinion on this?

Would I have a different opinion if I were with my friends when this happened? Would I have different opinion if I had met Dipendra earlier? Just curious how our mind work.

Thanks a lot Nepalikochhoro for reviving this shambolic horror of Nepal's recent past. People must be reminded time and again about that black night so that they can at least realise how history can be modified or falsified or distorted or exxagerated in favour of the victor. That how an innocent man (thats what my conviction is) can be tagged as a sinister murderer of his family and that how a world dances on the tune of the songs composed by the wicked victors.

And thanks Matrixrose for putting on those bold and brilliant thoughts. Yeh, our courageous words against the evil injustice will at least help an innocent(my conviction) culprit's soul rest on Peace. God bless Deependra's soul.

As someone who witnessed the aftermath of the June 1 horror very keenly throughout the streets of central Kathmandu to the alleys leading to Aryaghat, I have so many thoughts deep down my memory lane that I get emotional when I recall those days. A nostalgic allergy.

The toyota's distressing horn made me awake at 4 am in the morning. I opened the window and saw my office's motor awaiting down in the road. I hurriedly put on my clothes and ran down to the vehicle. Why are you so early today? I asked the driver. 'Don't you know anything?' he replied and said everything that came from the international media till than. I couldn't believe him. On the way to the office I got the glimpse of the truth that was to be confirmed later in the day. Space Time and Nepal Samacharpatra had a couple of lines that hinted about the royal tragedy but without a clearcut idea on what had happened. Kantipur had nothing and same with other papers as well. In the office, we decided to carry on with our job excluding the royal incident. I read with a heavy heart together with a colleague of mine, but in the middle we were told to stop . And then some orders came from 'mathi' and the melancholic tunes of sorrow, along with 'bhajan' sarted to hit the Kathmandu air waves.............................................

.....................................................
I along with one of my friends walked in the early morning through Thapathali, Singhadurbar, Putalisadak, Kamaldi to Durbarmarga and Narayanhiti. Scores of people were already there, some crying and many bewildered without a clue about what was happening with them. What were they up to? Through the edge of the South of the Narayanhit, that was yet to be cordoned, we reached in front of the big gate of the royal privy council.A big Crowd was gathered there and journalists and photographers were pushing the armed policemen to get past through the big door. The securitymen were struggling to quiet them. Somehow, I managed to sneak in .....
After a long anxious wait Rayamajhi declared the then King dead but Deependra was said to be still alive. Some hopes raised but they were lies......

Through Asan and Indrachowk came Hanumandhoka
The scenes were more confusing in there. They said there were plans for a ceremony, but that they were postponed for tomorrow. ...Probably they were awaiting the death of the new King in coma, I guessed. I climbed on top of the terraces of the temple across the entrance of Hanumandhoka and tried to study the atmosphere....

I wonder if I am right with the chronology of events here. The next day, the alive King was crowned, after the new King in coma was declared dead. He looked sad most of the times but once gave a cunning smile after being crowned and I saw him so fake. I have always seen him fake ever since.....

I joined the procession from Kamalpokhari in the evening. People were climbing on the weak brick wall by the side of the road. Heads struggled to peep through the windows. People cried, wept.... Procession reached Aryaghat. We were across the Bagmati on the top of the terrace by the side of miniature temples. And the King's and the Queens and younger Prince and the Princess' body were put on the pier. flames and ashes....

It was almost 11 when I was back at my room... The new King was to make fresh announcement. Sounded quite determined...The next day curfew was declared because there were plans to confiscate Deependra's body... We watched in TV his body driven in a vehicle, never had that happened in the history of Nepalese royals. I think he was not even properly cremated. ...

I witnessed the aftermath right infront of me. Drove through deserted Kathmandu streets amidst curfew. Saw Dr. Rajib Shahi explaining how events unfolded in the friday party. Saw Taranath Bhat reading his findings in the top floor of one of the buildings inside Singhadurbar. Read the commission reports line by line, words by words twice, thrice and many times. Read Kumar Gorakh's version after he was discharged from Chhauni. But how can I believe them when there is not a shred of reality in the explanations. Unfortunately though, I don't know the truth either. I mean what exactly happened inside the Palace. I wish some day, the truth will be revealed. Or else our history will be marred with black truth.
Frustrated,
newuser

The facts or the supposed-to-be-facts, rather, have been laid out by the commission, Rajib Shahi, Gorakh samsher and so on. It is up to the individuals whether or not to believe that, based on their judgement. I find the explanations of the Commission, Gorakh samsher perfectly credible and choose to believe that, more so when the eyewitnesses' accounts do not contradict each others at any point.

Having said that, being a skeptical that I am, though I find the explanations perfectly credible, I can not rule out the possibility of truth being distorted because I was never there and what i heard was a third person's account. If the commission or gorakh samsher or rajib shahi lied, to distort the truth, they have dont a really good (evil) job at lying. But the bottom line is I find the current explanations perfectly credible.

Agree with Mahisasur completely. In our part of the world, due to the lack of transparency of the government, conspiracy theories are the only means to explain such events. This is exactly what happened in this case too. I totally believe that Dipendra was responsible. To anyone wondering "how can one murder his own family ?", had you known a drug addict at the personal level, you would no longer wonder.

The lack of evidence is proof of a conspiracy. That I cannot produce any evidence only confirms my suspicions that there is a cover-up.
