Nepal-India border meeting resumes: BY SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT NEW DELHI, Aug 30 - With the joint preparatory committee comprising officials with the survey department, and home and foreign affairs ministries of the two neighbors meeting in the Indian capital from Monday, the Nepal-India bilateral process to resolve all long-standing boundary dispute issues has finally started. The preparatory Nepali delegation is led by Rabin Sharma with the Department of Survey, while his Indian counterpart is leading the India team of officials and experts. The meeting will pave the way for the meeting of the Joint Technical Level Boundary Committee, which is to start from Sept 1. That committee had been directed by the prime ministers of the two countries in September last year to complete the remaining mandated tasks by June 2005. A task never finalized despite the signing of the Sugauli Treaty between Nepal and the East India Company in 1815, there are at least 53 disputed sites along the 1,753-km-long Nepal-India border, which has so far remained open and porous. News Report.

Nepal, India clash over Indian-built barrage: News from Asian Economic News. Just five days before Nepalese Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala embarks on a visit to India, the two neighbors have clashed over a barrage and dam recently built by India on its side of the border. Nepal says India built the 13.6-kilometer Laxmanpur Barrage, without consulting Nepal, only 4.25 kilometers from the Nepal-India border. The dam has caused inundation in Nepalese territory and thousands of people from 33 villages have had to be evacuated, the Nepalese side said. A Nepalese parliamentary committee has said the construction of the dam and barrage on the Rapti River is a violation of the international law. But the Indian Embassy in Kathmandu said the barrage is 8 km from the border, the requirement according to international practice. But Nepalese Foreign Minister Chakra Prasad Bastola told the official RSS news agency Wednesday the Indian dam has in fact inundated Nepalese territory and India's version that Nepal remained unaffected was not acceptable.

Nepalis returning from India being drugged, robbed by Indians: Bhairahawa: Incidents of looting by drugging Nepali citizens returning home from their work in India have been increasing along the road from Gorakhpur to Sunauli. Eight such Nepalese have so far been looted while returning from various parts of India in the second week of Asar. The looting gang comes near the victims and pretends to be also returning home from India and offer biscuits, tea and other poisoned food after the bus travel begins from Gorakhpur, the victims said. Although the leaders of the gang are Indians, most of the looters are Nepalese. Merely a week after Mahendra Bahadur Samaimagar was looted along the Gorakhpur-Sunauli route while returning from Benares, Rudra Gautam and his son Tara Gautam of Devdaha VDC ward No. 9 Rupandehi were also looted. Rudra Gautam, 43, and Tara Gautam, 17, who were returning from Hyderabad were robbed of Rs. 80,000 after being drugged. The Gautam father and son were returning from Durga Factory and were looted at Sunauli bus park by two Nepali youths Saturday morning. The two youths came near for a chat after boarding the bus. The Gautams also spoke to them. But when they arrived at Sunauli, they were offered biscuits while coming out of the bus. ?Immediately after eating the biscuits, I became senseless and found myself inside a Bhairahawa Hospital Bed?, said Gautam. Nepalese police found them lying unconscious at the border area of Belahiya and admitted them to the Bhairahawa Bhim Hospital for treatment. "My earnings of three years have been lost", he said. "Although I received only Rs. 1800 a month, I had saved some money by spending only Rs. 600 for fooding and some more made from ?Dhikuri? for three years. Last week, Mahendra Bahadur Samaimagar lost Rs. 40,000. In the month of Jesth, ten people were looted and admitted for treatment, Bhim Hospital sources disclosed. Forty four people returning from India have been admitted within a period of 2/3 years. Some who refused drugged food stuffs were forced to sniff poisonous scents the hospital said. The drugs used to knock them out are very powerful, the doctors say. The looters are based in Gorakhpur and seem to be operated by the Indian police by taking commission, a source at the Rupandehi District Police Office said quoting the Indian police. High level efforts with the Indian police have been started to end such crimes. News from The Rising Nepal. source: http://www.nepalnews.com.np/contents/englishdaily/trn/2002/jul/jul01/

I agree 100% with Mayaluketi. No matter what How it cost to us or How long it takes to secure our border. We must do it. We can do it now, but when border villages turned into mega cities like ASHON bazar or NEW ROAD. It is hell to build wall or barber or do something on border. Let's think that if we have to build super high way through Ashon. It is not impossible, but Can anybody just think?

Why I feel like this thread is filled with dumbasses. Restrict the border with India and in turn same from Indian side. Then what hunger and starvation to the commoners. We gotta protect our border. But its not gonna work with typical Gorkhe attitude. We gotta filter out the corruption and inept poltical force. Make Nepal internally strong and deal with neighbors diplomatically. Its because of our leaders, we are in this situation.

I hate to say it, but being realistic, there is very less that Nepal can do to protect border problem with india. India is much too strong to fight, much too arrogant to talk, and the international community is not interested at all to help. The only thing Nepalese government can do is be self-sufficient and have as less nepalese crossing the border as possible. Having open border with india is not helping at all.

You know what nepal should do? Shut down the damn Indian boarder. I know we are like 90% depended on them but the more we mingle with India the shi*tier our country gets. I saw we shut down the dhoti boarder and be depended on china instead. That would be waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay better and china wants to help us as well they jus wont until we ask for help.

We Nepalese have ideas but everyone is full of words no one want to step up and do anything about. How about creating an internation Nepali organization to explain and help finance and have talk with government about this matter rather then just talking over in Sajha and forgeting about it tomorrow. I bet even maoist would agree to this. I will tell you one thing if one of the member from this Sajha group is ready to start this organization for the cause then I am definately willing to join otherwise talking about this is pointless and we will keep talking until its too late.

You are old enough to see the problem that has devestated our country so you are old enough to help any and everyone can help I just wish I had more people like you in our community to try to do something, but everyone is just words when it comes to do something about it then everyone back down.

One more thing DeViLsKyLine bro don't ever doubt what one can do if they have their mind set for it. Your thought of you not being able to do anything because you are too young is wrong attitude to have. Think about it, if you as a young person can think of this problem plaguing our country then other older and other people will think he is right and they will feel like a fool for doing nothing. When you talk the talk, you also got to walk the walk, other wise leave the issue alone because just talking about the problem will not find any solution.

I believe there are more Nepali in India than Indians in Nepal. Indians are in far better position to dictate in their terms than ours. I hope there will be some sort of solution. We are unfortunate to have poorest neighbor state Bihar. Anything like Karnataka or Maharastra or Punjab would have been great. But Bihar--even Indians hate going there and associating themselves with Bihari.
