Shah Rukh Khan detained for 2 hours at Newark Airport in US Indo-Asian News Service New Delhi, August 15, 2009
First Published: 11:18 IST(15/8/2009) Last Updated: 16:20 IST(15/8/2009)
Bollywood icon Shah Rukh Khan was on Saturday questioned for two hours at the Newark airport in the US over his surname and was freed only after Indian diplomats intervened. The Indian government and entertainment industry reacted furiously after the 43-year-old actor, named by Newsweek last year as one of the world's 50 most powerful men, revealed how he was detained and stopped from even using his mobile telephone. Speaking to CNN-IBN channel on telephone from the US, Shah Rukh appeared to shrug off the embarrassing episode saying he had suffered similar treatment previously too. The incident happened as the hugely popular actor, whose fans number millions in India and abroad, was on his way to Chicago to attend an event related to India's Independence Day. Other Bollywood stars like Katrina Kaif, Kareena Kapoor and Saif Ali Khan too are set to attend the function. "They checked me because I was an Asian," the actor said. "They wanted to know why I came to the US and where I am staying." Shah Rukh's manager Niloufer Qureshi earlier told IANS over telephone from Mumbai: "He was detained because his surname is Khan. He was kept until officials from the Indian embassy intervened." Asked if he got into trouble because of his giveaway Muslim name, Shah Rukh, who is married to a Hindu, said: "Certain countries have issues with my name." He quickly added: "I am very proud of my name." Information and Broadcasting Minister Ambika Soni denounced Shah Rukh's detention over religious grounds. "I don't think that this manner of detaining (in the name of religion) is justified. But in the US, several examples have surfaced where frisking takes place more than required," she told reporters in New Delhi. "There should be a tit for tat response." Bollywood filmmaker Karan Johar, a close friend of Shah Rukh, said in Mumbai: "I am shocked and upset. I am feeling terrible." Shah Rukh admitted that he became "greatly worried" as the American officials piled him with questions -- mainly about his travel to the US. The actor said a large number of Indians, including organisers of the Chicago event, were waiting outside at the airport to receive him. Indian diplomats came to his rescue when they heard about his plight. He said it was ironic that the incident happened on the eve of Aug 15 -- when freedom is celebrated by Indians. "I personally feel it is over and done," he said, sounding conciliatory. Asked if he felt like reacting in a similar way, he replied: "If they want I can frisk Angelina Jolie when she is here (India)." Undoubtedly one of Bollywood's biggest and most highly paid stars, Shah Rukh has acted in nearly 70 films in a career spanning 17 years.
CELEB DETAINEES... Irrfan Khan was stopped for questioning not once but twice. The first time at Los Angeles airport. He was there to receive an Independent Spirit Award for The Namesake. The actor claims he was detained because he is a Muslim. Neil Nitin Mukesh were also detained in a similar fashion but at New York airport, where he was scheduled to shoot for Yashraj film New York. Immigration Authorities allegedly stopped Neil because they couldn't believe he was from India

Yes, it is right. The immigration officers have to follow protocols, no matter who you are. Good that they did their job. And its normal to recially profile mossies after 9/11. Da.. what a suprise right?

This is US of A, not India. Crying like a baby..........he was probably hurt that people do not know him here, Ouuuchhhh. "World Famous"----my ass. So he resorts to some drama, I'm sure he was NOT coopearting with the officer, which ticked him/her off to detain him, like those typical big shot people who has "You don't know me?" attitude. Arrogant prick.

Looks like another case of 'racial profiling.' The question is will Mr. Khan be so lucky to drink beer with the president? FF

This is of course a bad news, but many Nepalese treated by Indian authorities many times in the same or similar ways that SHK was treated at Newark, NJ at the eve of their I Day.
It is really frustrating to know when Indian authorities send state level ministers to welcome even our prime ministers while they visit India, and frustrating to know that they interogate Nepalese in the borders and at their airports (eg, Delhi) and take away Nepalese travellers passports for hours or give mental tortures to them in some other ways while in the transits. Now they are even plannings to place their cops in our international airport in Kathmandu in the name of security check ups.
India, until and unless you treat us and others fairly and equally, don't expect that your nationals, whoever they are, will also be treated fairly by some other powerful, develop nations.

This reminds me one of my old thread
HAVE YOUR SAY (:-) HAVE YOUR SAY!Is it necessary for the staff of Continental airlines to know who is A.P.J Abdul Kalam? Government in Indai are in outrage for the following act of Continental Airlines Staffs -
"The frisking was absolutely unpardonable," Minister of State for Civil Aviation Praful Patel said in the Rajya Sabha. "Action will be taken in accordance with the sentiments of the house."
The statement came after MPs from across the spectrum expressed outrage over Kalam being reportedly subjected to a full body check and even asked to remove his footwear as he waited on the aerobridge of the Newark-bound flight at the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) in April this year.
"Continental Airlines has been issued a showcause notice under section 11A of the Aircraft Act for wilful violation of the law," Patel said.
"The frisking or action per se was absolutely wrong. The former president and other such dignitaries are exempt from such frisking," Patel pointed out.
After Leader of Opposition Arun Jaitley had raised the issue in the house during zero hour, Deputy Chairman K. Rahman Khan said: "It is the unanimous sentiment of the house that this is a very serious matter. I hope the government will take note and take appropriate action."
Patel also denied reports that security operations at the airport had been outsourced.
"Security has not been outsourced. It is still the responsibility of the CISF (Central Industrial Security Force). This incident involved the security of the airline at the embarkation point," Patel pointed out.
The Congress also said the incident must be probed to find out the reasons why it happened.
"We certainly need to look into it and find out why it happened," Congress spokesperson Jayanthi Natarajan said.
Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) leader Sitaram Yechury said it was an unfortunate incident and wondered if it had something to do with Kalam's name.
"I believe they do not acknowledge that he was the former president of the republic of India and if someone like that is considered to be a security threat, it's very unfortunate. I really don't know whether this has something to do with the name as well, in which case it is much more serious," Yechury told reporters.

This is propoganda to promote his movie " My Name is Khan", nothing else. They knows U.S.A. is the right place to make such a issue as it is related to Muslim and will be heard GLOBALY. Yes, it is true that he is not so called GLOBAL ICON, usa do not give damn to any body including president. No one is above the law, unlike in India. My Salute to Immigration Officer who have done marvelous job. Just another Propoganda to become richer and famous.

Hey guys, This reminded me of my incident that I had to face at Baltimore Airport. There were like many blacks and whites before me. None of them were stopped even for question but for me, I was checked everywhere. I had to take off my shoes. My whole hand suitcase was searched and i was taken to the special room for further investigation. I was totally pissed off. I told those freaking police mens that how come they didn't check white and blacks before me and I have to go through all this sh%t. This is blatant RACISM and they were quiet. I was so frustrated that i can't tell anything now. So no wonder superstar like SHAHRUKH KHAN gets frustrated. Like i said, no matter who the president, there's still RACISM in U.S. Laterzzzzzzzzzzz Peace Sirus_Me

The other side, NEW YORK: The United States on Saturday denied the allegations that Bollywood superstar Shahrukh Khan was detained and questioned for two hours at the Newark airport or that the actor was singled out because of his name or Asian identity. The allegations "happen to be incorrect," the spokesman of the US Customs and Border Protection Elmer Camacho said. The spokesman said Shahrukh was inspected because his baggage had not arrived. "His documents and papers were checked, which were found to be in correct order," Camacho said. After a "normal" check at the airport, Shahrukh was taken to a different room where he was waiting for his turn since many other people were already there. The entire process ended in one hour, the spokesman said. The entire process, he said, was handled in a "professional manner" and there was no evidence of Khan being pointed out because of his name or Asian identity. To a question on Khan's contention that he was asked by immigration officials about his work in the US, the spokesman said "it's our policy not to discuss all specific (details) of any traveller".
