'Cut-off' in govt funding for jatras triggers protest; Home Ministry urges calm

People from Newar community in Kathmandu staged angry protests against the government on Saturday for not allocating budget for traditional jatras (religious festivals) observed in Kathmandu Valley.

People from Newar community protesting the government's decision to cut funding to jatras (traditional religious ceremonies) at Basantapur...

The protesters blocked traffic at several places by burning tyres on the road. There were protest rallies in Basantapur, Teku and Kalimati areas throughout the day. Shops remained closed in these areas with the protesters frequently clashing with the police.

The local Newars took to the streets saying the Finance Minister, who unveiled the budget estimate for the fiscal year 2008/09, cut off the funding for jatras. Protests had started as soon as the Finance Minister presented the budget at the parliament.

On the contrary, some news reports quoting government sources said the funding for jatras has not been cut off. However, the Finance Ministry has not said anything on the matter.

Meanwhile, issuing a statement this evening, the Home Ministry urged the protesters to call off their protest and help maintain peace and security in the capital city.

The ministry also said security has been beefed up in some areas in the capital to prevent possible violence in the wake of the protests. nepalnews.com mk Sept 20 08

i feel the need to keep these traditions and cultutural jatra from tourism point of view. you guys dont know how many people actually come to see these festivals from abroad. it is one of the things that represent our rich cultural heritage. bishal 123 looks like u shld have been born in africa...u got misplaced. just becasue you came to the US doesnt not mean that you languish your background. the finance should be continued for jatras.

the title of this posting is not correct becasue newari people are not the only people who celebrate jatras. all of the people in kathmandu take part in this process. the bottom line is that: this govt is not not attacking newari people but attacking the foundation of hinduism in the process of moving the country to communism instead of capitalism.

Kaji shab, my comment was referring to the news below. I don't have problems about 'Jatras'. Even Japan has 'Jatra' but not wild one like we see in Nepal. Pull the chariot getting drunk.

If you wanna keep traditions alive like ‘Bali’, then do you want your wife or sisters get burned alive just to keep ‘Sati pratha’ alive?

No problem in Cut-Off  of budget sacrifices in the name of god .... god ko nam ma nakate pani masu ta pakkai khanchan saab nepali lay .... tara Cut-Off of budget for jatras doesn't sounds good .... i heared a huge percentage of budget is for tourism tara if they cut off budget for jatra then there will be no tourist as they visit nepal to see their culture, jatra and many more ... khoe k k ..... i never drink in jatra tara if others drink then i don't have problem ... if they were not drunk in jatra then King Prithivinarayan Saha wouldn't have been successful for winining kathmandu after is effort of more then 15 times ....

Aru kura taha chaina i don't like Cut-Off of budget of jatra ...

Now it's time to cut off heads of corrupt politicians.

For fairness, every other caste should be given the budget not just Newars. If not, NONE should have it.  Every other casts have their own cultures, not just Newars (for those who think Newars are the only one that has a culture, who think Newari culture are the only one that needs tourist atttention or promoted). Even though I'm against Maoist, this piece of legislative is worth praising for. Way to go.

Newars must be allowed to practice their culture. It is their right but the government should not be paying for it. If the Newars and the others think they should continue with it they should come up with the money to organize it. If Nepal is to become a secular state (Through actions not just through some enacted laws and amendments) the government must not sponsor any religion.
