Happy New Year to All Nepalis here in Sajha.com, and elsewhere in the world including in Nepal. God bless that this calendera continues to play important role in the lives of Nepalis, and I will get a chance to say Happy New Year in this April 13th. My wishes for good of Nepal are now vaporizing faster than ever.

If my predictions ever failed miserably, it failed this time. Completely upside down. My only excuse is that I did not have enough data.

I am now thinking what extreme will Maoist want to do in the aftermath of election victory:

1. Say "Sayonara to King Gyanendra". Will Gyanendra sucide? Best way to die while being King (Mathematically, it is better to be zero, instead of being minus). Let Paras decide his faith. They might even bring him on the road have gillete and kill. For communists public prosecution is the best way to keep grip on power. 21st century version of French revolution. In France, people in later days, were saying "Only 100 prosecuted today?", and they started counting the number, and did not care unless among them is you own. That day is ahead.

2. Military. They will change the head of army. Bring Maoist or puppet of Maoist as head of the army. Those Armies on the Maoist radar, will be sacked and given death penalty.

3. Civil Service: All non-Maoists will leave or be baptized to Maoists.

4. Local bodies: Unresolved problem will be resolved. I am guessing that the remaining UML local level cadres will turn themselves into Maoists, because UML is no more a powerful force, after all the Maoists are also communists. Bachna pani ta paryo ni.

5. Property (initially confiscated land, later other industries and biz): Count your property. First land, then banks. All banks will be nationalized.

6. Temples and religion: Hindus will be attacked first. At least the highest body of Hindu ... will be banned. The Bikram sambat will be changed to another one to reduce the influence of Hindu Religion in their politics.

7. Educational institution: All private schools will be nationalized. Equivalence of Mahendra Mala will be introduced.

8. Opponents and supporters of opponents from each village will be ejected or forced out of the village. Will change in to killing field. Pran based on whom killing field is no more there to watch another killing field in Nepal (he died on March 31, 2008), and we will see more "Pran" in Nepal, more horror stories.

9. There will be no election, well there will be election like in China or in North Korea or in Cuba, but these will be only in Name, and it will be very similar to the one King Gyanendra tried and failed. But Maoist will not fail.

10. Will give something to India and China (china may want all Tibetans be ejected out of Nepal). Indian Politics will need something in return, so that they can enjoy: Hydroelectric power generations. Don't forget that it is Indians who let Maoist grow using their land, and they are the one influenced to bring them on Table when they realized the Maoist are power enough to be a political force so that they can use them in their benefit later.

These are my extreme guesses. But, everything depends on whether they can have 2/3 majority or not? Madhes is the only hope that I have now. If they don't get enough votes in east Terai, and MPRF or other Madhesi parties, then the equation might change. Even throwing King out of Nepal. King might stay, because non-Maoists might need him as a Draupadi in the gamble.

God Bless you Gyanendra, and Nepali Janata. Unfortunately God did not bless to UML. It is end of UML. Congress may come out, but UML will not. I feel very sorry for UML.

Now, should we accept the poll result? Yes, we must. That is democracy, and that will leave door open for us to reach to Nepali people with a new mandate. Make sure that they don't become Polpot, and YCL does not become another Khamerouge.

If they are real communist they will do that but Maoists are not communist anymore. It is fully controlled by its PLA based leadrs and YCL based leaders who believe in killings, torture and extortion. It depends on who controls the party. They are very loyal to Indians as they were grown there and they can do the mistake worse than UML did in Mahakali package.

Apart from those they will not seize or touch the property of upper class family rather than targetting middle class and lower middle class as they did during their revolution.

Their first target is to disintigrate the nation into small states and attack on religion in the name of sovereignty.

GP you are such a big Nepali Congress fan, aren't you? Why are you trying to frighten everyone? Remember, the Maoists have not come to power yet. Anything can happen. 

To me, the very best thing out of this election was that the Nepali people displayed utmost understanding of, and sheer intellect in, expressing their highly-aware aspirations throught the ballots. Besides the few anomalies here and there, the GENERAL PATTERN was crystal-clear. -- they wanted CHANGE. Even among the NC and the UML, the newer faces seems to be winning, and (otherwise) the Maoists got their faith. The people truly desired a New Nepal, and they are well on their wayto get it, I think.

Now, this very capacity of the Nepali people to do mathematical and precise analysis of where the country should be headed -- for good or for bad -- their sheer level of great awareness -- will check the Maoist excesses should they form the new government. I am sure the Maoist leadership also understands this reality very well. No one can under-estimate the will of the people in this day and age. Therefore, I believe, some of the extreme fears of GP-ji have reasons aplenty for doubts.

Pol Pot era is done with, and can never revive. International community, particularly India, the EU, and the US will never allow extreme communism flourish in Nepal. Maoists themselves have come a long way (despite the fears and doubts of many) from the jungles, making serious and positive compromises along the way. DEMOCRATIC Republic has been, and, I believe, will always be, their unquestionable motto. Should they astray from the path of democratization, and some extremests within the Maoists may try to do so, the proper checks (that of the Nepali people and the international community) is firmly in place, I think. This is not to say everything will be fine and dandy in the months and years to come, but I believe, despite some upheavels, the Nepali nation will move forward towards the ultimate positive goal.

That said, I suspect some forms of socialism (tolerable to the people) may be introduced, particularly in the areas of education and health, and service to the poor. But communism like that of Mao? Tyranny like that of Pol Pot? I really don't think so.

For now, I cannot help but gleefully cherish the making of the NEW in Nepal.

Well GP ji why r u tryin to frighten everybody. Almost all nepalese including myself  living abroad or USA did not realize the ground reality in Nepal. All the time we thought maoist are some kind of terrorist who never did anything goot to general people...well duh!!!...seems to be wrong!!!.... Any way nepali people seem to be tired of same old leaders and need some dramatic change (which i doubt). If the maoist start doing things as you mentioned GP ji...I'm sure they will follow UML's path in next election. Nepalese seem to be far more politically aware than what we think of. I don't think such dire steps that GP predicted will  implement by Nepal Communist Party (Maoist) because they are committed to  "DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC" not an "Autocratic Republic" like he think.  Let's not forget that we are in the 21st century and Nepali people are no more dumb like it used to be in the past.

Well first of all the election results so far, assuming that they were relatively fair and balanced, states that Kathmandu is not Nepal. Even Kathmandu has Maoist leaders as the winner. Unless they were scared to death by Maoists, it is fair to conclude that the entire country disliked the current regiment and poor life style to the revolution and violence that went with it, that Maoists had started. It seems that most part of the country firmly believes that all the sacrifices, violence and wars were worth it.

 

That being said, we all have to accept the Maoist governance whether we want it or not. Instead of continuing to hate them, we have to work with the government now; and for those who have personally suffered, I know it might be too much to ask. I myself never objected Maoist philosophy, specially since they understood that absolute communism is not practical in todays world, however I condemned the violence it carried out. The election result concludes that it was necessary and I’d accept the result.

 

Having said that, I don’t see all the things that the poster above mentioned happening right away. These are the impediments in maoists assuming the rule of government:

 

1. Maoist need to solidify their leadership. Despite various decrees by Prachanda, YCL and extremist activities continued. This has to stop.

2. Maoist need to organize themselves for an administrative government. It is one thing to win a war and another to rule a country.

3. Intension should be honest. While many had right motivation to steer the country in the right direction, many still joined maoists for revenge or because they didn’t like the person governing the country. Once the objective is fulfilled can we still maintain the focus of fair and just government?

4. Many, as admitted by Prachanda, in Maoists still have the fundamentalist and extremist views. The Elected MPs should realize that we have to work with India, China, USA and entire world and that absolute communism is not a possibility.

5. Forceful governance is dictatorship. Maoists resorted to violence to get rid of inept government; but can they now think sensibly and resort to a structural approach to beaurocracy?

 

I am hopefully optimistic, but I know for sure we have long way to go. I don’t care who rules Nepal (Maoists, King,  UML, Congress etc etc) as long as the government is fair and works toward the betterment of the greater Nepal.

I dont agree with both extremists, One fearing like GP and Sumedha, or another thinking A real peace ful socialistic society. First of all, lets take a look at some of the unsolved issues.

1) This is a CA ELECTION, not parliamentary election. So, what will be new government like. It is sure that NC / UML no more lead the government. But Still PRACHANDA keeps on saying on COALITION government. and will prachanda be primeminister, or how they could declare president , and if temp law for that wjo is president and who will be prime minister.

2) Was there some hidden issues prachanda agreed with NC/ UML. (like ma sabai kura bhandinchhu), if there are now they can not blame GPK, MKN for those and how will they decide , may be the fate of the king. other things like they have shown the dreams to cadres, Nepalese people but can not be resolved or very hard to resolve. Like kalapani, susta, 1950 sandhi, ..........................

3) It is sure that they will not keep KING , but they will not kill or prosecute, but only reap from power.

4) Maoist will form the similar type of government like NC and UML. Nothing happens to the rich ones.

5) they will try to please India, China and USA. no matter what...............

6) there may be some form of new socialistic reform may be in education, health care.(But that is only after parliamentary election, not after this election)

7) There will REMAIN the media, private boarding schools, and any private things. There may be land reform.

8) there will be dangerous situations in the rural areas due to uncontrolled cadres, But as a whole they will not be, cuba, North korea, and other extremes.

(One thing they need to do is revolution in bureaucracy, by law or by fear. the corruption shud be ended) its my wish

AND FINALLY, NEPAL IS A COUNTRY WHERE EVERY PREDICTIONS ARE FAILING< EVERY POLITICAL< SOCIOLOGICAL THEORY ARE FAILING< SO IT IS SAFE TO PREDICT NOTHING. BUT TO WATCH CLOSELY and WISH A NEW NEPAL. in the occasion of New year 2065.

 

I had posted the following in a separate thread. But having read GP's "sour grapes" predictions--right after admitting how wrong he himself and everyone else were about Maoists' chances--I wanted share my view of a hope here. I firmly agree with other friends who are hopeful. Let's all be hopeful. We have seen NC & Amale, let's see the real Comrades. How worse can it get? Having said that, here was my first considered reaction after the result seemed apparent yesterday.

Good Luck Comrades: The Another April Revolution

Even before the elections, April 10th was supposed to be a once-in-a-generation day in Nepal. All of us heard or read about "ek juni ma ek choti" while we anxiously looked forward to the CA Elections. Our anxiousness was warranted because we were not even sure that the election would finally take place; after all, the election had be postponed twice already. 

Another reason for our nervousness about the upcoming election was the fact that we all KNEW that the Maoists would lose. We were told time and again in the Nepali and International media that Maoists' loss was a foregone conclusion--it was just a matter of how badly they would loose. We just hoped that the election result wouldn't send them back into the jungle and end Nepal's precarious peace. Also, those of us living abroad, knew the Maoists only through the news of intimidation of its youth wing, the YCL. For us, every mention of YCL in the news meant another reason to distrust and underestimate the Maoists chances.

Therefore, it was such a huge shock on the day after the election. I am still surprised and all my friends are. We have wondered why we did not see it coming. Of course, it has been established right here in these Sajha threads the reasons why. As the "elites" of the country, consuming the elite-produced and elite-consumed news, we did not know the pulse of the real voters, the real Nepalis. 

It turns out that thousands upon thousands of Nepalis were ready to give Maoists the chance--the same chance that both the NC and Amale had squandered before. How do you explain a no name Maoist candidate beating the General Secretary of UML,  the second biggest party? That too in Kathmandu!!? 

It is sufficiently clear that we were operating in pure vacuum, that we knew nothing. It seems likely even the parties themselves--Maoists included--had no clue. But the masses have spoken and it is resoundingly clear what they want. Their vote says that they are tired of the ineptitude and infighting among the same old leaders of NC and Amale. Though the voters may not fully trust the Maoists, they sure are willing to give them a chance. And who knows, maybe the Maoists have not be so bad after all. May be the news media indeed focused on their negatives and didn't give them credit where credit was due. The fact remains: the voters threw out the old and went with the new. 

Indeed, we were clueness.  

But let's leave that now and look ahead. We are all concerned. What happens now? What will come of this April Madness? This yet another April Revolution?

Here is one Nepali's wish: I hope that what we didn't see coming ends up saving our country. I hope that the Nepali voters are finally vindicated for their ballot choice this time. Let's us hope that the Maoists take the mandate of the people to heart and work honestly and diligently. Let's hope that they can lead the CA into drafting a Constitution that serves Nepal well for centuries. And let's hope that they put the wishes and needs of the entire country before their party and idelogy.

And let's hope that this April Revolution--this one of the ballot--changes Nepal for the better. If it takes the Maoists to take us to peace and prosperity, so be it. Good Luck Comrades!

First the properties garnered by So-called political leaders after 2046 should be confiscated. If not i m gonnaopen another revolutionery party against maoist. If these maoists make the same mistakes, then nepal will be deleted from the world map.

The result is veing very interesting. I really admire thier master plan. I hope they won' t be very extreme and make country stable and give democratic rights to the people. I think that's what Nepal needs right now.

Although I have been relatively less wrong than many others have, there were surprises and things to learn for me as well. After all, I was consuming the same-- now we came to know-- misinformation fed by our masters of information, as others did.

 

I think-- now I can say it with more certainty-- there has been a concerted campaign (probably with an intention of doing a good, if not a right, thing) from the elites to spread the negative information and suppress the positive information about the Maoists, and  spread the neutral information and suppress the negative information about other political forces, in Nepal. The net result is what our minds became the victim of.

 

To understand the nature of misinformation about the Maoist, it will be helpful to divide Maoist into two parts,

 

1. Conduct part

2. Political part

 

There is no doubt that the “conduct” part of the Maoist has been less than perfect all along ( assuming other parties’ conduct are perfect).

 

However, the “political” part of Maoist is more than perfect, in my sincere and serious judgment. Every single political proposal and compromise made by Maoists passes every single acid test of pro-democracy, forward looking, progressive, doable and good agenda.

 

Maoists did use a brand name (communist) many of us living in the US can not be comfortable with. But it came with their legacy. And it sells in Nepal. Communist is a respected brand in Nepal. I am surprised to see many Amrigane Nepali’s ignorance or pretence about that. They call “Commie”, as if that is a gaali in Nepal.  These wannabe Redneck Gorkhes need to know their American English is not spoken in Nepal. In Nepal, communist means a man of principle and character. That’s why the leftists of Nepal fight among themselves to claim the “genuine communist” title.

 

To continue, Maoists did feed some traditional communist rhetoric and even life style to their cadres. particularly during the war. I think it will have some consequences. However, I think it will be minimal, transient and manageable.

 

I have thought about it a lot. My appraisal is that it was actually good. It gave the cadre a discipline and semblance during otherwise a confusing and vulnerable period of war.

 

Whether the war was right or wrong is a different debate. My point is, whether a disciplined war or a free war is better. A free war could have produced  hundreds of undisciplined war-lords during ten years of war. Communist rhetorics and life style prevented that by giving the fighters a discipline to adhere to.

 

Imagine Nepali Congress conducting a ten year long war for democracy. How would it look like ? KB Khadka, B Gachchadar, C Wagle, GR Joshi and dozens of other heavyweights would be having their own armed bands and they would have been devastating the country beyond repair.

 

Okay, that was hypothetical. However, there is a small but a real war to draw speculations from. Nepali Congress' armed rebellion of 2007 BS and their activities afterwards in rural areas was full of abuses. I know a case of a gang rape and murder (of a distant relative of mine) by Nepali Congress rebels in an Eastern district of Nepal.

 

You must have heard, “Tero ghar ma Kangress Pasos” used to be a cursing then.

 

Imagine a ten year long rebellion led by Nepali Congress.

 

We are lucky that it was not undisciplined Nepali Congress but a disciplined communist party that fought a war for republic democracy.

 

And as I said, except for the  brand name and a little dose of communist rhetorics to their cadres, Maoists have nothing communist that we fear.

 

“Prachanda Path”, “Democracy for 21^st Centuary”, “12-points agreement” with SPA, “25-points peace accord” with Nepal government, "Commitment paper" (Election manifesto) for CA, all are about 100% democracy, democracy and democracy.

 

It is irony of Nepali communists that all their life they fought for democracy (of course republic one) but they have been labeling themselves as communist (as if they are anti-democratic).

 

And the irony of Nepali Congress is that there was never democracy (internal democracy, that is) inside their party (the era of BP and Tri-murti was no different than the era of GP), and they always wanted to leave some power to monarchy. Yet they are THE democratic party of Nepal !

 

This is how our political inside is.

 

So, my take for the future of Nepal with Maoist at the driving seat, if that is what we are seeing, is.

 

Democracy: intact and strengthened instead

Economy: Capitalism with a symbolic tilt to socialism

Foreign relation: Less submissive to India and more diversified (globalized)

 

So, I am optimistic and less alarmed than many of us.

The fear, such as that argued by GP, is baseless.  Playing with Nepali people's fears is what everyone, including the Nepali media, has been doing all along and arguments that GP makes are a testimony to that.  So what are we supposed to do now, GP?  Protest again?  Ask for another election?  Seriously, what's your solution now?

No wonder that your predictions/guesses have failed miserably in the past.  Be assured, they will fail this time, too!

There is no denying that the Maoists have resorted to violence in many occasions even after the negotiations with the other parties.   But as many people in this forum have suggested, the results are an indication of  not just people's fear of the Maoists, but also  -- and I think, mainly -- how pissed the Nepali people are with the ridiculously arrogant king and with inefficient UML and Congress leaders.   Gauzing from the results so far at least, it is clear that (i) the people want the monarchy to go (whoever was that individual running some 'surveys' and saying 49% of people believed in the king can go to hell) and (ii) the people want the old faces to go, as DWI suggested.

The next steps for whatever is left of the UML and NC should be to capitalize on their international legitimacy (note that the Maoists are still on the terrorist list of the U.S.) and work with the Maoists for a better Nepal, not start telling the public again that the world will end when the Maoists come to power!

GP ji, I agree with all your points and about you saying "But, everything depends on whether they can have 2/3 majority or not?"  IMO, 2/3 majority is nothing and through terror AGAIN these damn commies would make sure all the legislature they want passes would be done without opposition.  Does anyone even have the balls to stand up to these ignoramus'??  And for optimists and opportunists who say that the "people" will decide all outcome...Are these folks crazy?  The people would be wetting their pants on the thought of even opposing these goons.  Listen man, Loktantra was a misnomer.  It should've been Gundatantra all along!!

Thats quite an insight and analysis, and I should say  - a very reasonable one.
As you said, there are three type of politicians in Nepal. First they never read any books and pronciples. They are mostly NC. The other group read some books 30 years ago. They are now UML and  the third group that are reading books and doing an analysis in the last 10-15 years and they are called Maoists. Thats why they have some charisma now.
