This makes me proud to be a Xaverian. It's not how nice a car you have. It's how many friends did you give the ride to. Live for God, Lead for Nepal... indeed! A report from today's Kantipuronline.com: Govt school students with Xavierian caliber BY ANJALI SUBEDI KATHMANDU, May 11 - Though enrolled at Ratna Rajya School, Raju Katawal, 16, is as good as any Xavierian, in studies as well as extracurricular activities. "Cost-free classes at St Xavier's College gave me and my friends what people from our kind of background would never get otherwise - the capacity and confidence to excel," he said, exhibiting his impressive command of English. Under Partnership in Education (PIE) program initiated in 2004, some 900 students like Katawal have benefited from quality education delivered at St Xavier's College. Under the program, students from government schools attend classes at St Xavier's for two hours every morning from grade eight through ten. Xavierians English suck....I know some Xavierians who failed in our English 101 pre-test and were forced to take English 90... Just cuz you're a Xavierian doesn't mean you can excel... I know lots of bright Nepalis who come from Govt school background but have helped not only them and their family but the community in whole... no this steriotyple of xaviraian having " expressive command of English" is a over rated baseless belief.. Besides having a strong command in english does not make you smart or dumb.. it's a slavery mentality that needs to be changed in our society.. but since our society copies India and India is embeded with the Gora slavery mentality we r doomed anyway...

Dyamn, I think you forgot to read between the lines. I don't think its the comparison between a govt. school kid and a private school kid and who's better, or whose english is better. It is the resources that are more readily available in the private schools. Allowing that access to others free of cost, which many other PRIVATE schools would hesitate, is laudable. It is up to you to either take advantage of such programs or blame it on India, our favorite pasttime and play victimization and do sit in protests :)!

I think lot of people have uninformed ideas about Xavierians. When lot of Nepalis talk about education, they mean book learning, SLC ko marks etc. But education has a more dynamic meaning at STX. They do not expect students to memorize whole books for the sake of getting top ten in SLC board. STX gives a well rounded education as opposed to the lop sided education that most other schools tend to give. Consequently, you will meet with a Xavierian who has a well rounded education not limited to memorizing books. that's why you rarely see anyone on board top 10 in SLC. Students get many opportunities to excel at what they want to do by participating in many extracurricular activities made available to them such as sports, educative contests, school newpapers, drama/plays, trekking/hiking/camping, Leadership training service, scouting, etc etc. Through group projects students learn the importance of camaradarie and positive attitude. Positive thinking is a very important thing that most students learn. More than anything, I think students from STX are imbibed with the feeling of बाँच र बाँच्न देउ In godavari, as a student you have to fulfill few hours of social service at the nearby village where you actually become a part of the village family by helping them with thier day to day activities such as gathering fruits from trees, making cow dung patties for burning, even eating together with the villager families. Activities like this teaches humility which many people never get to learn all their life. I have heard from others that Xavierians are proud but personally I don't think they are proud to the extent they are arrogant or contemptous - perhaps there might be few but not to the extent you can generalize. It's same thing such as us Nepalis feeling proud of being Nepalis. It's natural to feel proud of one's institutions. But rarely do Xavierians belittle or speak badly of other schools. If you see a Xavierian who's proud of his school or his education, please remember बाँच र बाँच्न देउ and let them be proud of their school. If a person feels comfortable speaking in english then stop assuming that it is to 'show off'! Xavierians are mostly broadminded about things like this and would rarely make an issue about someone else being proud of their school or speaking in english....

parbatya, There are many people who are ghamandi whether or not they went to STX. Being ghamandi is more of a human trait than a Xavierian trait. :)

Xavier is nothing but a rich kids school ... notice that most of the Xaverians (not all) are from wealthy families .. If you are a son of some freaking Neta then you get admission in Xavier ... no offense to those who got into Xavier thru entrance exam

I respect Budha.. they have been giving full scholorships to under privillaged forever. When you compare Budhas with STXs students, you can tell the ghamandi attitude as a difference. And i suppose , it's pretty obvious in Nepali socity who are famouse for the ghamandi attitudes. I know there are lots of smart STX's students and i've met some real nice ones too. However, most students think they are smart if they speak in a language mixed of English and Nepali. They tend to use some phony accent and like to use as much english as they could , whever possible. True evolvement should be on science, maths , technologies nd not competition in English. Why is it that people in Nepal think STX's students have English which is no lesser than any Briton or American. It is not true. If xavirions want to wear the belt of best english users then they should prove it on how they have used the language to acheive the best out of it, and i do not mean to say impressing some old folks in the valley. It's easy to impress old folks in ktm with some english words but to compete in a global field of excellence where language has little value and critical and innovative thinking has more appreciation, it's different folks... I am not making these comments of STX students but some of the folks in Nepal and India who think English is the measure of smartness. Honestly , i have always hated the admission process of STX which gives preference , a big one to the children of those with money and power in the society. No offense to those who entered with fair competition.

These Xavarians are so proud. Just show me one Xavarian who has done good! About fluency in English, they speak like this, " Look look under the rukh muni". I've seen a lot of Xavarians in ASCOL. Only thing is they show off as if sons of billiionaires. They do not care about the government scholarships, or pretend they don't. Because they have access to O level and A Level, SAT and GRE etc. Some are talking about all-round development. Extra-curricular activity? Only thing they have done extra might be the fact that they had already girlfriends from across the street, aka, from St. Mary's. And remember, education does not belong to any one. It's there for those who strive. What I found was these X were neither good at English nor at Nepali, mostly they were average.

Those who criticize STX and their students, show me a weblink that talks about the contribution of your school to Nepalese society. At least we have one news link. It is easy to criticize. http://www.kantipuronline.com/kolnews.php?nid=109228
