This piece of news really shocked me. FYI he is not our folk singer but he has been well exposed to nepalese community in Japan through his various activities. As far as I remember, he was using Dr. title since 2005, but it is disgusting to know that he got his phd just last month in march 2007. It means he proved himself he is very dishonest person. With that impression, I would hardly believe in his research or any other claims in the coming days.

People used to get surprised in Japan when they hear Kumar finished his doctoral degree, as it is extremely hard to get phd awarded in Japan within the duration shorter than 3 years.

As all off you know, there is no universal rule for the phd. Depending on the university and the supervisor, the standards throughout Japan also differ very wide. However, in general, most universities in Japan require at least 1 peer reviewed paper, 2 conference papers, course works and examinations, mid-term defence and final defence. The top-ranked universities (Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, Nagoya, Hokkaido, Tohoku, Kyushu and TIT) do have more requirements and pressure to publish in high-ranked journals. Most of them need 3 or more peer reviewed papers, 7 to 10 conference papers with oral presentation (poster presentations are given less merit in Japan as they assume that the conference organizors review abstracts for chosing papers for oral presentation, which happens in japanese coferences). Their standards for phd is high and the requirements are not easy to cross over for a normal student within given 3 years of time. That's why students keep working on their research throughout 7 days 7AM to 11PM without enjoying any breaks except for lunch, dinner, tea-breaks and occasional parties. This is one of the main reason why it is very hard to work and study in japan as most others can do that easily in the USA/Canada or Europe or Australia.

In Nepal, holding a Dr. title has become a fashion. People merely need to present evidence of their earned title, neither limit themselve in the subject matter they specialized. They just pick up any subject they can reach to. For example, a Dr. in linguistic can be a conflict management expert, a Dr. in geography could be environmental expert, a Dr. in water quality could be a water resources planner, a Dr. in electric induction system could be an energy specialist.

On top of that there could be a large number of Dr.s in nepal, whose titles were never questioned nor investigated. You may find a lot of Dr. title holders, who will give you hard time if you elect to trace their scholarly contribution. It is really hard to find out their contributions that made them earned those titles. These Dr.s are however smart enough to build network, to hook up into juicy projects, sell their skills at high price and win publicity based on filthy facts. I think, now time has come to set up some system that checks such false claims and prevent people from abusing the whole society by such malicious intention.

Contour, u don't need to go farting, whose business is what. It is exposed now that he has lied and thats it. You might be the person fucckin your own brother's but t for your benefit and then sitting down in commode thinkin abt yourself.

FYI, there is nothing for me to get jeal about him. Also, getting a phd is not that important in the career path as everyone can get it if he invests 3-4 years of his good-time, but lieing intentionally with an unearned degree is the proof of worst dishonesty, which can not be corrected simply as if you knock somebody by your elbow and say sorry later on. You are at no position to defend his wrong deeds just saying that he has one now.

Just want to correct chana tarkari when he states "This is one of the main reason why it is very hard to work and study in japan as most others can do that easily in the USA/Canada or Europe or Australia. "
Well, have you done PhD at all the universities in north America, Europe, Japan and Australia? Then how can you say that the requirement of 3 publications (that too with two conference proceedings) makes the study at Japan harder than that in north America where a student has to take a number of high level courses and attain A grade in addition to the novel research work (the course requirement is a reason why in Canada and states students take 4-5 years to complete PhD). FYI, in north America, PhD students do work extended hours, have to teach classes (as a part of funding) and do publish in peer reviewed papers. Be it Japan, North America, Australia or Nepal, the quality of PhD work depends upon the researcher not how many hours he/she spent in lab.

The Ph.D. work requirement varies greatly from university to university let leave about the countries. I agree with Chana that the requirement of publication as first author in peer-reviewed journal makes it comparatively harder. I also agree with Harkey that it can not be measured by the number of hours spent; but we can see it as a dedication of a scholar. As far as I know, I've not heard of any requirement of getting 'A' in courseworks. Truth is that it depends on lot on individual basis as well. I'd also like to say that given the fact that the Ph.D. holder has gained some knowledge with his/her research, he can get into different fields in today's multi-disciplinary academia. However, he/she do needs to show the credibility of it, and the article published on kantipur or other newspaper featuring him/her won't qualify for it.

Mr. Kumar Basnet has shown dishonesty from the beginning before even before starting a new career, and it makes harder for other people to believe about his works, and questions about credibility of his works, or he has to work harder to prove honesty about himself if the employer ever finds about his dishonesty.

Contour, his wrong doing does not need to impact me personally to get me angry, if I am really angry. In my first post, I was simply posting other stuffs, such as how hard is it in Japan to get a phD and so on rather than anything against Kumar basnet. I added some info on how Dr. titles have been misused in nepal, but you came to fight with me with sh*ty words and now you went down to personal level to attack me. Ok, if you want to listen why I condemn him - here you go.

1. his this stupid act made his advisor, friends, other nepalese student in Sophia University and the whole university circle in Japan feel ashamed, which matters a lot in Japan

2. because of him, japanese professors and public raise their eye-brows towards nepalese pupils, who otherwise are considered laborious and honest.

3. just look in the title of this thread, just because of his wrong doing all japanese phd holders and current phd students in japan came into attention if not suspected

4. he was president of NESAJ, a reputed students organization in japan, and the whole society and its alumni is feeling uncomfortable.

5. he was also in NRN japan chapter, and many other organizations, some 30 different organizations including japan-nepal frienship clubs, once presidented by japanese former premier Riyutaro Hasimoto.

6. Still there are more to list, but I stop them here.

Now, do you think, one need to be personally affected at all on such issue if his stupid act is enough to offend Nepalese dignity abroad? Remind you, none of the above listed impacts affect me directly, but it definitely offends anyone who understands the value of honest career path. That is the reason, this matter got attention to be investigated and the result of investigation got a news value.

Right now, I am not gonna to think why he lied. You may wanna do that for your hobby but you will realize he did that out of very stupid mind and for no good reason at all.

On a side note, just stop teaching me. FYI I don't need a phd or any other degrees to add up. I have left student life way-behind and currently working for dream-projects of the USA. Neither do I keep on commenting using sh*ty words as you prefer to do, nor do I think wrong about others unless I do know the real depth of the matter. Kumar basnet might be too ambitions, which might have taken him to this wrong path as you are aware of the fact that too much ambition is disastrous. And you are defending his wrong deeds for no clear reason at all.

Who is using a sh*ty word in the first place? First read the post thoroughly and then comment. All I want to state is the quality and hardness of PhD work is irrespective of the country in which the student is studying. Some of the Uni, not all, do require you to maintain A average to pass the Master's or PhD degree. Well said Contour. If you are working in a dream-project then why bother wasting your precious time going after Kumar Basnet.

NRN should have fired the guy. It's an issue of honesty. If someone is found mispresenting credentials, then the person needs to go. That's what happened with MIT's dean of admission as well. Does not matter how good she was at what she did...

Saying "now that he got his PhD it's okay" (in the link above) is lame...

To get enrolled in Ph.D., and to complete Ph.D. successfully are two different things.
What Mr Basnet did is entirely wrong and not trustworthy, at least in academics. Of course it won’t harm any personally, but such act definitely displaces the real and honest people.

Counter, just learn to respect other’s honesty, learn to differentiate the right and the wrong, and learn to condemn the bads (I hope you are conscientious enough for it).

There is no point that Chana gets burn by that kind of shameful act.

One more thing, never ever underestimate people here in sajha. You don’t need to tell how hard it is to get Ph.D. degree who already had it. Better you take precautions to talk and challenge others not to regret later on. (I gave you enough hint, I guess).

Guys,
I agree with Chana's points of views. It is totally disgusting to use some academic honors with out being eligible.
But I have doubt on Japanese University's credibility. Why a Japanese University granted him the degree after finding he had openly misusing the university's name. There was similar case in my university to a guy from Kenya. Later university expelled him from the PhD program and didn't granted the degree at all.
More boring fact is: Nepalese credibility in Japan will be in question from this foolish act of this so-called Doctor.
Whups!!!NRN 's Member????? NE BI Sangs president of Japan????
It is shameful to whole Nepalese Community abroad.
and NE Bi Sang'S past persident in Japan? It must be shamefull to Ne Bi Sang andNepali Congress. What about NE. BI. Sang's headqurater or Nepali Congres in Nepal take action against this guy..May be he is no more member of NE. Bi. Sangh.

I think that is very illegal to use the title which he hasn't earned, but is there any legal system to punish such act?

Its not only morally wrong but also illegal to do such things. Shame on Mr. Basnet. He should be stripped off his phD degree.

I agree with later postings...Mr. basnet should not have done that. In the field of academics it is definately considered an act of dishonesty. You have to defend your research thesis, convince your committee members, get approved before placing a title of Dr. in front of your name.
