I got this in an email. Dear friends of Nepal: As you all know after the advent of the so called democracy in 1990, the media sector was open to the private sector. Individuals with a shady past who had made a significant fortune during the panchayat period, needed to rehabilitate themselves in the post 1990 era. One of the fortunate individuals with a vast hidden wealth was a gentleman called Hemraj Gyawali. He had served in a number of posts during the panchayat period . One of those mentioned posts was as a Customs Officer in the Far Western Region in Nepal . Not only did he accumulate a vast fortune, he was also involved in a murder case and there is a case pending against him. With the help of some learned scholars and some businessman from abroad, he managed to open up Kantipur Publications. To disguise his illgotten fortune he found cover in businessmen like Upendra Mahato. Mr Mahato hence claims he hardly has any stake in Kantipur Publications. It becomes quite clear that Kantipur Publications is fulfilling the interests of India . Kantipur Publications is also not TRANSPARENT about its source of funding and revenue. Nepal possesses a vast amount of Hydropower resources. India obviously would like to tap in to Nepal's hydropower resources to fulfill its power requirements in the future. Booming economies cannot progress further without oil, gas and hydropower . What better way to go about it then to create unrest and insurgency in a landlocked neighbour . Kantipur Publications suited India's interest well . RAW (Research and Analysis Wing) is being used by the Indian Embassy to fund Kantipur Publications India used RAW to cancel ARUN III which would have helped Nepal tremendously. Kantipur lobbied vigorously against ARUN III at the behest of India. It is a known fact that Hemraj Gyawali has Bank accounts all over India. With the help of the so-called scholars like Damakant Jaysi, Puran Bista and Prateek Pradhan , Hemraj Gyawali and Kantipur Publications are promoting unrest and upheaval in Nepal. A weak Nepal is always in India's interest. The key word here is : HYDROPOWER . Infact Prateek Pradhan is in the pay of South Block. Puran Bista and Damakant draw supplementary income from New Delhi -- Dr GP Bhandari, MD Department of Community Medicine BP Koirala Institute of Health Sciences Ghopa, Dharan Nepal Phone: 977-25-525563(Ext-Off:2626;Res:3073) Fax:977-25-520251

You convinced me, too. From now on, I am going to read only Gorkhapatra and The Rising Nepal. Is there anyway on the Internet where I can listen to Radio Nepal? I would like to boycott other "biased" news sources like the Kantipur, Nepal1, BBC, etc. And I will add this GP guy to my mailing list, which as of now has Preety Koirala only.

Yes, Kantipur should be boycotted because it believes Nepalese are human beings. Gorakhapatra and Rising Nepal should be wholehertedely supported because they think Nepalese are still monkeys. Yes! Yes! Hear! Hear! We are proud to be monkeys!!

Why this doctor(whoever wrote this appeal) waited so long to get his story heard..God damn... this is a bigger news than NSA wiretapping scandal that is dogging George Bush's administration. I'm going to cancel my subscription of Kantipur right away and block Kantipur website on my home computer. Shouldnt we mount a North America wide protest against Kantipur and RAW sponsored news globally ?

sajhabushaima Throw out of samaj ? which samaj are you talking about ? Nepali society is so fractured at this moment even if you throw them out of one faction, they will end up at some other faction. These guys will loose nothing at all. How can they lose something that they never had in the first place ?

Judging from the tone of the letter, this looks like a propaganda from the king's men than a well-thought argument from a Phd. Does this "GP Bhandari" actually exist?

Who the hell this Dr GP Bhandari ? I believe this is a fictious person. If he does exists, I think he needs to be taken to Lagankhel Psychiatric Hospital not BP Koirala Institute of Health Sciences.

Why on earth would I believe a pseudonym in a public unmoderated forum such as Sajha? Thanks, but no thanks. I will continue reading Kantipur Publictions.

It's good that this "letter" is here on this OPEN forum. The beauty of an OPEN forum full of people with various political persuasions is that, by and large, indefensible absurdities are exposed quickly, and that defensible good ideas are appreciated. **** OK, Gyawali might have been a corrupt customs officer in the past. OK, Pradhan et al might be on India's payroll. But so what? Really, so what? How dare some people suggest that, on the basis of some allegations, they have any right to tell others what to read and what not to read in their private capacity in Nepal? Nepalis are FREE to read whatever they want to read, and then interpret it in any way they want. It's as simple as that. Besides, what the hell is a professor of community medicine doing, telling others what newspapers they should read and should not read? At this rate, what's next? A professor of community forestry telling us what TV station to watch and what to avoid? Requesting people to take private actions for some supposed "public" good rarely works. In principle, though, this letter is the intellectual equivalent of some "democrat" Roger Adhikari's urging Nepalis in California to stop sending money to their families in Nepal until democracy is restored in Nepal. Yeah, right. Again, asking diverse groups of Nepalis to sacrifice their immedate private gains for some supposed, vague public benefit rarely works -- in Nepal or elsewhere! oohi ashu

I do not agree with all of your points but I am sure that Kantipur has become "Gorkhapatra" of opposition parties. News and views in Kantipur have become much more biased and superficial these days. Kantipur is now just another low quality Nepali newspaper that speaks for certain groups.

that is the reason why you have to read about the same events and issues from different news sources. One of the thing I really hate about Nepalese ways of thinking is that they feel that the news are biased whenever they read things that they disagree with. Nepalese simply cannot "agree to disagree" or accomodate disagreements. Forget about having stable democracy in Nepal with this kind of mindset.

"How dare some people suggest that, on the basis of some allegations, they have any right to tell others what to read and what not to read in their private capacity in Nepal? Nepalis are FREE to read whatever they want to read, and then interpret it in any way they want. It's as simple as that." --Ashu Your first sentence outrightly contradicts your statement in the second sentence. Whoever this guy is and whether his arguments have any truth in them or not, he's simply using his freedom of expression. Nothing daring about it. What *would* be offensive, for example, is if he had *coerced* people to read only certain type of newspaper. But he is only making a case based on *his interpretation* of the information he has, and I fail to see what is so inherently objectionable about it.
