  • When Anju Pant says she cannot sing hindu bhajan we oppose her.
  • When CK Raut says Madheshi people are being treated like lower class people in Nepal then we oppose him.
  • When Paramanda Jha takes oath in Hindi we oppose him.
  • When some madheshi leader wears dhoti in parliament we make fun of him.
  • When some tribal from mountain region uses cow for food we oppose him.
  • When some leaders propose to change the flag or national animal we oppose them.
What does this mean?

It means we are still suffered from King Mahindra’s so called Panchayati Nationalism fever. Wake up people, this is 21st century’s, ‘Federal’, ‘Democratic ‘, ‘Secular’, ‘Republic’ of Nepal not anymore ‘Panchayati Kingdom’.

Good points, but don't you think you are stretching it a little bit?

First of all, who is "we"? A handful of protestors? Understand that no matter how liberal a society is, there will always be a handful of stone-aged narrow minds. Many times the latter faction are the loudest ones.
Second, nobody opposed CK Raut for his statements about the treatment of lower class people. This is like Fox News level propaganda spinning. People are opposing him for his divisive statements; he wants a separate Madhesi state. Not the same dude.

Most other points were mildly protested at best (except for Anju Pant, and I stood against the side that protested for the record). As for the last item, some leader proposes change of the flag and national animal and everybody else is suppose to just say AYE with enthusiasm? Protests are a democratic process as long as they don't get violent.

No it doesn't mean we are suffering from the nationalism fever. It just means we have the ability to think and react, sometimes for the right reason and sometimes for the wrong.

If we call ourselves democratic, why should we be afraid of those activists who want separate Madesh ?

Because in democracy you have to value both supporters and protesters. Do you want everybody to just keep quiet on every issue? Besides once we divide the country into pieces where do we practice democracy?

Specially for Mr Kiddo,

Please read this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scottish_independence_referendum,_2014

A referendum on whether Scotland should be an independent country will take place on Thursday, 18 September 2014.

This is called democracy.

That's not the only place where this is being discussed my friend. Catalonia, an autonomous state, is also trying to seperate itself from Spain. Many states in India have been trying this; heck if you go to Texas they will tell you how badly they want to secede.

But, just because a state wants independence, doesn't mean it should be granted. Heck, even in Scottland there is a strong opposition.

Please read this
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/scottish-independence/11088679/Republicans-and-Democrats-unite-in-opposition-to-Scottish-independence.html

This is called democracy.

Also understand the contexts at play. Scotland is an autonomous region which almost functions like an independent country.

And Scotland found oil under it's soil, so they want to seperate from United Kingdom. Oil gave them some balls since they think they can economically survive alone. But what will happen when Bank of Scotlad moves its hearquater to London?
And It_guy, do you really think federalism will really work in Nepal? Do you think the tiny states will be able to survive economically on their own? Or do you think there will be even bigger exodus of people from some states to other prospering states, thus leaving their home state completey empty? Federalism will be catestrophic to Nepal.
And to sum it up, Democracy to some people is like "Badar ko haat ma naribal".

My Friend Hurray, Now you raised the question about federalism. So I want to give another example of a country which is similar to our country by nature. Switzerland (polulation: 8 million and Area: 41,285 km2) which is smaller than Nepal has 26 cantons(member states).

Each canton has its own constitution, legislature, government and courts. Most of the cantons' legislature are unicameral parliaments, their size varying between 58 and 200 seats. A few legislatures are general assemblies known as Landsgemeinden. The cantonal governments consist of either five or seven members, depending on the canton. The Swiss Federal Constitution declares the cantons to be sovereign to the extent their sovereignty is not limited by federal law. The cantons also retain all powers and competencies not delegated to the Confederation by the Constitution. Most significantly, the cantons are responsible for healthcare, welfare, law enforcement and public education; they also retain the power of taxation. The cantonal constitutions determine the degree of autonomy accorded to the municipalities, which varies but almost always includes the power to levy taxes and pass municipal laws. The sizes of the cantons vary from 37 km² to 7,105 km²; the populations vary from 15,471 to 1,244,400.

Now lets go to your questions
1.)And It_guy, do you really think federalism will really work in Nepal?
=>Yes, It will work, be positive. See the problem of Madesh, see the problem of Karnali. Nepal is not only kathmandu but also Humla and Solukhumbu. If centralized government has worked in our country it wouldn't have been one of the poorest nation.
2.)Do you think the tiny states will be able to survive economically on their own?
=>Which is not necessary. Central government should support them and some states which are economically weak can be considered as union territory or states with limited authority.
3.)Or do you think there will be even bigger exodus of people from some states to other prospering states, thus leaving their home state completely empty?
=>Which may happen and now also happening. Why people go to ktm leaving their home district. Its the same thing. In india people like to migrate to Mumbai for opportunity. It happens everywhere which is human nature.

So, only thing necessary is "BE POSITIVE".

IT_guy

You are preaching about democracy in educated countries like Switzerland and Scotland where majority of people are educated and they already have a good political system in place.

It's not the same thing in Nepal. First of all there is no system in place and secondly the people are not educated, they do not know the ramifications of a democratic country.

It is ideal to have democracy when citizens know what democracy means and when there is a system to practice democratic values.

First and foremost the constitution should be made which will then provide the necessary foundation to build our democracy upon.

My friend Rethink, Nepalese people more politically aware than most of the developed countries like USA and European countries.

My friend IT_Guy

If you base your reality on few youtube videos then I suppose you have a right to live in your own bubble. In reality, more people in Scotland and Switzerland (and US) are educated than the people in Nepal, much more than people in Madhesh region.

Quite a few American's may not care about politics because they already have a system of governance. Their concrete foundation is already set.

Right now, in Nepal, the system of governance and democracy are like sand castles. Few kids come and build something and others come and destroy it and build something else. Even the slightest of waves cleans up the sand castles.

For anyone to support the division of sand castles is dare I say, too early.

Myfriend KaliKoPoi and Rethink:

I personally don't want country to be separated and even don't like federalism in Nepal. I am in favor of giving more authority and power to current 75 districts so that they don't have to depend on the center. 75 districts can have their own district government with district parliament, own court, own police department and own rules and regulations.

But I am not the only one person to decide. In democracy people are those who decide. If majority wants republic it should be, If majority wants federalism it should be and if majority wants to separate their land from main land then it should be (But do u really think Terai people will want to separate it ?). What do u say ?

Myfriend BathroomCoffee,

In democracy everyone has right to speak and raise their expression. If majority of people want Panchayati Kingdom, it should go back to that.

It guy , you need some more education about Nepal not IT. First learn something before you make some comments.
2) ck raut is not just advocating for madhesi he is trying to seperate madhes from nepal.
4) धोतीis not our official national dress. Daura was removed from national dress but still its official dresscode for officers .

By the way IT_guy, you sound a bit like "Nepe" a guy who used to post here in Sajha many years back. He was so adamant about Maoists that every other post from him was a praise to those criminals. Looks like you are the same, but about federalism.
