Am I wrong in thinking that all Nepalese people are selfish, including myself, and is the sole reason why our country is still a third world country. Eveyday, I read the news about road closures and office padlocking with people putting up gazzillion point demands (like recently a hydroproject office was padlocked with demands of local public). If only they thought about the damage they are doing to the country and not be concerned only about their own benefits, I think our country would be as developed as the west. I can see that there is a powerhouse in each country like London in UK, New York in USA or Manhattan in New York, etc. and development spreads out from that center.

Nepalese politicians are the same. Why don't they think that they've done enough corruption and have had enough and give a second thought to Nepal as well.

Wonder if there is any solution to this self-centered Nepalese mindset???????

Any views?

Well, there's a strong possibility that you may be right in your perception. Selfishness breeds selfishness; corruption breeds corruption; compassion breeds compassion. In other words, what you sow, is what you reap. The way things are going, Nepal needs nothing less than a mega civil war. Nepal needs a dynamic, fearless leader, who will be capable of striking down even the highest figure of authority...all in the name of people's rights.

Everybody's mindset has to change. Not only the politicians. You cannot depend on someone else to change the country. Each and every one of us has to change, in order for the country to change. But sad to say, most people have the "herd" mentality. So, for that, you need a dynamic, charismatic, bold and brave individual...who is prepared to put his life on the line.

Jai Nepal.

Heartbeat u r 100% right

1 these leaders have no ball to tackle the situation

2 No unity among the leaders no matter what party they belong to

3 AAFno aang ma Bhaisi hideko nadekhne arka ko aang ma Bacteria hideko dekhne , esp applies to Girija n senior leaders who got too many opportunities to run the country , now they r barking against Prachande  as a FIASCO

4.  If these leades R united,      WHose father what vitamin applies, esp India.

5 Finally, nepal will b a Switzerland of the east

6. Leaders r always looking for some opportunities like, Now Girija's last dream is to make her daughter PM of nepal. thats it. This is leading all to nowhere, but to a Shangrilla.

If the intent is to have an open conversation, here goes my view:

Being selfish is an inherent nature of a living being. You wouldn’t live if you weren’t selfish. Sure the degree of selfishness matters and this is probably what you meant, but to fix our issues by trying to cure our selfishness is an impossible task.

Give me an example of a developed country and I will show you a country that was built on selfish, corrupt leaders. The railways, roads built in US were possible because of the selfish act of then selfish (and highly corrupt from todays’ standard) businessmen such as Carnegie, Stanford, Rockefeller, JP Morgan etc.

So what is the solution?

To have a carefully drafted book of law, also called constitution and to have checks and balances (like 3 branches in the US) to ensure power is not exercised to only one’s benefit. To enforce this, we need a good judiciary/legal and law-enforcement program.

Before I go too much on how to get things right, I want to reiterate my point that hoping people become unselfish and patriot is not the way to go at this critical juncture of our country.

ECO-101: Adams Smith's Invisible Hand Principle states that the greatest benefit to a society is brought about by individuals acting freely in a competitive marketplace in the pursuit of their own self-interest (selfishness).

In that light, I'd advise you to be even more selfish starting today.

Adam Smith died 210 years ago :) Things were a little (understatement) different back then.

In this age of over population, selfishness would only mean someone else is not getting what you have.

We are misunderstanding the biggest and the simplest factor. Democracy will not work in a culture like ours. We have too many rudimentary flaws in our social system.
Social Reform first
then Political reform comes later.

Not the other way around. Every developed country went through social changes and then later came the political aspect. We on the other hand are going the reverse, it simply will not work.No other nation has done it. We'll never find "a dynamic, charismatic, bold and brave individual".
Why do you think we have a expression "Jun Jogi Ayepani..." cause it eventually happen no matter who get to the power. Our forefather knew it, so they made it. Can you translate the same Nepali saying in English? Do they have something exact like that? They is no concept like that....everybody will NOT be the same, is what they believe in and comes out pretty true.
"Birds of a fether..." is not like ours.
All these so called F##d up leaders are just ordinary people like you and me, have family who love and support them, role model for relatives, their crooked power and wealth are raved by the neighbors,neighbors--- who are cursing at their straight son for not being a successful crook. How many parents do that in the West? How many parents say "I wish you were like OJ Simpson"
Values! Values! Values.
My 2 cents.
