Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala Wednesday said that today the country has changed its political dimension adding that such a day comes only once in an era.
Addressing the first meeting of the Constituent Assembly at the Birendra International Convention Centre (BICC) in the capital, PM Koirala said, “We are gathered here to solve problems, my dream has come true. The dream of the Nepali people has come true.â€
Today’s CA meeting stands as a platform which will fulfil the nearly six-decade long aspirations of the people to write their constitution, octogenarian PM Koirala said in a statement read out by Minister for Peace and Reconstruction Ram Chandra Poudel.
Mentioning that a new constitution must be drafted immediately to lead the country towards to a new and progressive path, the PM called on all members elected to the CA for their active participation in drafting a new constitution.
He further urged the CA members to fulfil their responsibility to the people, country and the martyrs.
The Constituent Assembly formed by the people’s mandate will establish a republic in the country ending monarchy as per the people’s aspirations, the statement further read.
PM Koirala stressed on the need for a common viewpoint and consensus to lead the country towards development ending the prevailing poverty, illiteracy and backwardness.
The country has entered the phase where the peace process will conclude successfully, he added.
“We have become successful to guarantee the representation of all areas, castes, gender, level and community in the constitution-making process,†the PM’s statement said. “We feel proud to appear as a model in exercising inclusiveness in the CA,†said the statement.
It added that the CA will bring about political, economical and social transformation in the country.
Today’s opinions, decisions and working procedures will continue to affect the country in the future as well, PM Koirala said in the statement.
The PM reiterated that the culture of coordination and consensus should be maintained until a strong democratic foundation is constructed.
“It is our responsibility to implement the agreements and understandings reached in the past,†he added.
He also informed the CA members that he has already requested the CPN-Maoists, the largest party in the CA elections, to take initiatives to form the new government.
