Well, we shouldn't be slapping anyone let alone our moms, but yes definitely we should be pointing out at times when she is wrong.

One of the main problems of our society is the inability to stand up for what one thinks is right infront of elders without being disrespecful. This applies to everything from sex to life style to marriages.

How many nepalese who have been fortunate enought to go outside of Nepal to study and learn different cultures and see different life styles to form their own opinions, go straight back to Nepal to live as if they have never left the country? If these lot cannot bring an ounce of change, you expect those nepalese who have not been fortunate enought to step out of Nepal to bring change? Disagreeing with your parents, elders and old and obsolete traditions of your culture does not mean you disrespect them.

 

 

 

This video is 90% bullshit. It's just the compilation of few young guys who sound really young and have very small knowledge of our tradition and the nepalese sex life. I cannot deny the fact that women are dominated in our country, but it's not the case of everyone. In many families, female leader holds all the keys of the house. And, sex is not the key of long term happy family. Love and understanding are. And Nepalese women are not treated as whore after getting married. The lady with the glasses is totally wrong. If she continue to think like that she will end up like one of those sev and city type girl who are single, alone and empty. Getting married having family life is better than being single alone and empty. It's just the waste of life working and partying and enjoying life. Life means achievement.
And what about the song, who made this video. Do they know Nepal??? Do they know Nepalese songs??? Looks like they were supposed to make the video of India but they landed to Nepal by mistake.

"Nepali tradition" of what? Let's say the lady in the glass is wrong. How do most of the Nepali women end up in life.Get married, make tons of babies and cook all their life. Of course there's nothing wrong with it. Happiness is different from peoples perspective. Some people prefer to be independent and free, some not. Your reference of "sex in the city" tells you how ignorant you are, it is a stereotype we hold of Westerner passed on by old farts who've never seen anything beyond Thankot. Get over with those BS. They live as happily as us, they have families values, if not better than us but more practical, it's reason they're where they are now and we're still in shit hole. There will be exception,esp in a country this big where every race and ethnicity exist from all over the world. It's a TV show of God shake, and Hollywood is NOT the face of America.I guess you got a PHD or you work in high tech job, that doesn't necessarily mean you know American now. Some people live here for the rest of their life and never learn anything beyond how they were raised, hell some do not even speak English.Of course things are changing in Nepal, it's inevitable. If you have to check with the rest of the world, living free and independent is the new lifestyle. Love it or leave it.
Matters of sexual indulgence and homosexual are always there in every culture. Funny when culture like the Iran's president claim "We've NO gay in our country". Made a joke of himself. Ignoring the truth is not the solution for our culture.

HAHAHAHA....that background song just split my intestines up. I was rofl-ing at the end. it just injected in the otherwise thought-provoking video a typical slummy tinge of some red light areas of Old Delhi

on a serious note: why was hindi music played in a nepali documentary? if it was just an instrumental or something which had an international (cross-over) appeal, i wouldn't have mind. heck, that sounds really cheesy and it's not even funny.

gutsy woman --the one with the glass on. although her choice of words (nun and whore) were a lil too far stretched out beyond reality IMO. but other than that, what she said is almost point blank accurate. but again, that's what i personally feel as some may want to differ. it's needless to reiterate the importance of sex education in our school curriculum (right from the primary level).

that said, we are transforming i guess--our culture, the way we think are being adjusted, albiet slowly--with time... i see a huge difference between what it is now and what it was some 10 years ago.

I must say at the outset that  I found  the commentary on this thread as amusing as  the video.

I have mixed feelings about the video.

On the upside:

- It is refreshing to hear people talk freely about issues related to sexual freedom and equality.

- It serves to remind us that there are people in our society who feel they are not being given their due space and find the whole system stacked against them if they dare deviate from the social norms.

- When people feel marginalized, bad stuff can happen, as our recent history bears witness to, and the voices of the marginalized need to be heard by the rest of society.

On the downside:

- If the purpose of this video is to depict sexual oppression then it does a decent job of doing that. However,  did anybody else notice that the video seemed to imply sexual oppression in Nepal was rampant but no data was provided to back it up?  Doing so would have lend much more credibility to that argument if indeed that is what they were getting at with this.

- I don't know about the rest of you but I thought the video had a  "these-New-Guinean-tribes" undertone to it.  Perhaps someone can shed more light on who the creators and promoters listed at the end are so that any doubts people have  might be cleared. Going by  which stories they chose to tell, the failure to provide a  countervailing view about the progress, although limited, that has been made in Nepal with respect to womens and gay rights, I felt the video displayed a limited and dare I say shallow understanding of Nepali society. At times it felt like watching one of those missionary recruitment videos that calls upon the faithful to bring salvation to hapless barbarians and rid them of the savage traditions in their inferior culture.

Net, net:

A rather provocative video that tells five interesting stories of the marginalized but in selectively picking these stories depicts only a small part of  the social narrative in Nepal.

One quick question on the girl whose face was blurred out - she talks about this  boy she met at the bar, the one who argued against arranged marriage, put her in "solitary confinement" etc, how did he manage to cancel her credit cards?  Don't the credit card companies verify your identity when you call for any reason, let alone to cancel your account? Maybe it is all true, but the video leaves plenty of unanswered questions. I am also curious about the "solitary confinement" she talks about - if she felt she was being confined against her will, how was he able to prevent her from calling 911? If all this is true, my heart goes out to her, but I hope there is an explanation somewhere for it all.

and the punjabi bhangra (not meaning to ridicule the music genre) really helped to add some more spice to  it, didn't it? 'sona sona...dil mera sona' hahaha..do they even know what the song means? or if it really fits to the gravity and seriousness of the issue that they were presenting(or trying to depict rather) through this video?

i agree with what you pointed out about the video as downsides. there are no stats to back up how much of the sample population thinks the way the people in the video do. however i would also want to give the benefit of my doubts to those who made it --graduate students of Anthropology (from my lil' research on the crew). they may have their own time and budget limitations. moreover, it depends upon the specifics of their research/study objectives and that could be one reason why the outcome looks shallow to some of us.

that said, i wish the documentary was longer and more deep in substance. as you said, it certainly does not cover the whole nitty gritty details/aspects of our society.

no society is perfect/flawless in its entirety. just like there are many grievances we may have over some of the things our culture taught us (which failed to provide us the space that we as human beings deserved), on the flips side, there are many other things we are rightly proud of it. i wish if someone could cover both sides in his/her study/research. that would lead to a fair(er) analysis of our society in my opinion.

Sure thing. At the same time we are not a nation of prostitutes either - the data doesn't say that. There are two sides to the picture. I am not denying the dark side exists - I am just pointing out there is another side as well and both sides need to be looked at to get a complete picture.

It's the dominant male attitude - taking women and sex for granted. Here are my 3 steps to solving the problem:

1. Corrective reaction: Hang all the bastards.

2: Legalization: Let healthy sexual economics prosper.

3: Liberalization: Market forces will take care of everything.

Maybe I missed the sarcasm but who exactly do you want to hang? I agree with 2 but only to a certain extent.  On 3, you need the government to make and enforce rules, the markets don't operate quite as well in that realm.
