Nepal's king calls for peace amid strike AFP, Kathmandu Nepal's sidelined monarch issued a rare statement yesterday, calling for peace as the ethnically-tense south of the country entered the seventh day of a violent general strike.
King Gyanendra's call also came less than two months before crucial elections as part of the Himalayan nation's peace process, which are expected to result in the abolition of the monarchy.
"May we Nepalese achieve success in ensuring an environment wherein all can enjoy a just and equitable share of the dividends of democracy," Gyanendra said in a brief statement.
The statement marks Democracy Day, when Nepal commemorates the return to power in 1951 of Gyanendra's Shah dynasty after the impoverished country had been ruled for just over 100 years by hereditary prime ministers. King calls for sovereignty, independence | | | |

The King said this is a message to the nation. In a three-paragraph message, he called for the traditional goodwill between Nepalese as a movement in the terai swells pushing self-determination and provincial rule. The King said there should be an environment all should to equally enjoy the benefits of democracy and called for a prosperous and successful Nepal.
