political leaders are removing king from notes Buddha to feature on Rs 500, Rs 1000 notes Kantipur Report/kantipuronline.com KATHMANDU, Jan 25 - A recent cabinet meeting has approved Nepal Rastra Bank's proposal to use the Buddha's picture instead of the king's on Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes. According to a source, the cabinet has picked the Buddha picture from among various alternatives suggested by the Notes Design Committee of Nepal Rastra Bank. The central bank had initiated the exercise to replace the king's picture from notes of all denominations following the historic April Movement that sidelined the monarchy from state affairs and even raised questions about its very survival. Except for the picture nothing will change in the design of the notes. "The other design of the notes will be retained," said the source. The source informed The Kathmandu Post that the new notes with the picture of the Buddha would come into circulation in the next six months

madeshi leaders may give him a space in their new notes if they find a new state (republic of madesh) for themselves.

Coming from a devout Buddhist family where even a glimpse of the Buddha on TV makes my mom fold her hands (namaste style), I wonder if my family/relatives would ever keep the notes in their wallets. I'm sure a lot of Neps would be hesitant as well. as we all keep our wallets in our back-pocket...where the a$$-cheek meets the pants!!...Not a good idea at all. I prefer keeping Prachanda's face against my a$$ cheek better.

Buddha is not supposed to be prayed; buddha was against image worshipping. I'd like to see buddha and other national figures in our currencies. I am against the use of political leaders' pictures in the bills. I'd like to mention one interesting fact. Swiss bills are the only bills where they don't use political leaders' pictures; my teacher mentioned, perhaps that's why people trust them more; and their banks are so famous and trustworthy.

FUG THE POLITICIANS. THERE ARE A LOTTA HEROES IN NEAPLI HISTORY THAT CAN TAKE THAT PLACE. WE DO NOT NEED TO SEE GUSHAAA POLITICIANS FACE ON OUR CURRENCY EVERYDAY. THESE FUGGING POLITICIANS HAVE DONE NOTHING BUT FUG NEPAL UP. WISH WE COULD JUST WIPE THEM OUT OF OUR HISTORY BOOKS. THEY BOTCHED A WHOLE DECADE OF NEPAL'S GROWTH AND DEVELOPEMENT AS A COUNTRY.

gahugoro , Buddha was against idol worship and so were most other religions. But they've morphed with other pagan/bon cults to survive and evolve into what they are today (if not, they would've been eradicated by the rulers of the medieval/ancient world). FYI, as per what you said it's ok for you to keep your dad's pic up your ass. You don't pray to your dad nor do you worship him so who cares, right? Hope you know that there exists something called 'respect' and homage towards one's beliefs. So for me, no Buddha pic against any a$$ cheek. Btw, why do we even need someone's face out there when we have so many unique attributes that make up our malfunctionaing corporation called Nepal.

I agree that other attributes can also be used in our bills. BIG NO TO PICTURES OF POLITICIANS. Unlike other countries, we don't have any reknowned scientists, and the only person whom the world knows is Buddha. So I think that it's a brilliant idea to use buddha's image in the bill and coins.

What about Sita from the Ramayana? Is she a good candidate too as she's from Janakpur. What about the Kumari? Put up all the gods and goddesses, prophets and saints of Nepal on our money bills...damn, what are we? Some friggin country ruled by religion? here in the US, we have a fine line that separates church and the state, Nepal needs to learn and follow suit.

ow about pictures of different montains. We have enough of them to accomodate different denominations. Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, Sagarmatha, Ganesh etc etc. Nepal is most known for its mountains around the world. So why not use them instead of people.
