hi sajha community, i am a biology major and have completed almost half of my major and GER courses but in the mean time many of my seniors told me that there is very limited oppurtunities for biologists in America, so i am in great dilemma and have been severely tantalized by my uncertain career. Would any one please let me know about the scopes, basic salary and oppurtunities for bachelors with biology major. But for last few days i have some other plans too , like getting transfer my major to biomedical engineering and for that i have to loose my 10-15 credits courses that is not transfereable to that major . and another option is to do major in two courses - Biology and Physis which will open a career in biophysics which i think is a hot cake in the job market. Your good Suggestion is really going to make my career!

Hey! I am a Biology major too. I don't think there is a limited opportunity for Biology majors. I mean there are so many fields you can go to from being a Biology major - there is microbiology, molecular biology, parasitology, immunology, biochemistry, cell biology, oncology, zoology and botany to name a few. I guess Zoology and Botany might not pay that much but if you decide to go to academia, everything will pay and you might have be be a postdoc for 3-4 years but if you love doing that, it is every bit worth it. And if you want to work in companies, may be microbiology, genetic engineering, biochemistry, cell biology would be a better option. And I have heard of people who majored in Biology and then went to law school and made shit loads of money as lawyers because of their biology knowledge. There is also Public Health and also Conservation related subjects.. I dunno much about them though..... And I think for a Bachelors, Biomedical engineering would make you more limited than Biology.....

Guys, it is not true that there will not be jobs for biologists in the fiture. NIH spends about 28 billion dollars annually in biological related resesarch fields. It only the mater the what area of research you are interested in? and where and how you get your training about it? You can be a biochemist, mol. biologists, pharmacologist, microbiologist, biotechnologists and so on. There are tons of biopharmaceutical and biotechnological companies in the east coast, west coast and other parts of the US. Of course, there is always academic research lab too, although the pay is very low in academic labs. If you have experties, you will find jobs. If you really want to make a lot of money, biology is not the place to be in. go to business school and other engineering filed.
