The deal centers on a compromise offered by Republicans that included a temporary worker program backed by
President George W. Bush. It also would allow illegal immigrants who have been in the United States more than five years a chance to become citizens if they meet a series of requirements and pay a fine

Better I have remained here illegally.............I could be a citizen................People who try to remiain legal and go for legal process to obtain green Card or h1B has many hurdles that govt has placed................God Bless America.

prajatantra-- when u say illegal immigrants dont pay taxes thats not true at all b/c there r all different types of taxes there is sales tax property tax income tax.
i think that all illegal immigrant live somewhere whether it is apartments or houses condos. they have to pay property taxes to their apartments and house which goes to maintain and keep running all sorts of things schools hospitals roads etc
and they definately buy stuff so they have to pay sales tax. and maybe some of them who get paid under the table may not pay but many of them dont get paid under the table and do pay income taxes as well. and they dont get any tax return like legal immegrants.

i hope this bill does pass everybody deserves an opportunity especially those kids who were brought here by their parents and didnt have any choices of their own to decide wht they wanted and have to live a life of fear and no opportunity. not the parents fault either everybody wants their kids to have the best.

This immigration reform bill situation is getting out of hand. The thing couldn't make any progress in the senate today and now those folks are on a 2 week recess. In life there are no free lunches. Too many illegals who have broken laws and have not had a clean slate in the US want to become free riders. After much thought over this heated debate where solid arguments can be made from both sides, I have come to the conclusion that giving work permits to almost every illegal who has entered here before 2004, is the wrong thing to do. It undermines immigration laws and history has a way of repeating itself. This might increase more immigrants wanting to come to the US for a save haven and it would completely be a slap on the face of legal people who did it the right way. Look, everybody worked hard to earn their nickel, that doesn't justify this proposal, plus these guys were enjoying tax free paychecks. There should be a clause that says people who entered here before 2000 can apply for work permits. That means you can clean up the mess of the last 5 and a half years of illegal immigration, by making the pool of eligible applicants equivalent to or less than the pool of people who are ineligible and thus have to leave the country.

hey all the people who supports giving amnesty to illegal are either illegal themselves or are involved in some iilegal activities here in US.

actually Thaha_Panyen i agree with you that only some proportion of illegal aliens be given the rights of becoming US citizen eventually.

gundaa dude. don't behave like gundaa. what i mean by saying "Legal aliens work hard if not harder than illegal aliens." is that they have to maintain status by going to college full time and working full time. This is not an easy task. While illegal aliens would only be working full time. do you get it how hard it is to maintain legal status.

alight people who supports the idea of giving these illegal aliens a legal right to stay in America. So what do you say if another 11 million stays illegally in US in another 4-5years later.
Is it fair to drive them away or give them a legal rights again as has been done today?

I think everyone is illigal in one way or the other.

Some came to US to study stating that they will return after completion to their home country. They are still here in many catogories. Some came here in a visitor's visa, changed their status.

I dream of one world, no country, no religion, no bounderies.

Thanks.

bornfree- of course we know someone who is illegal or we r illegal ourselves otherwise we would be like u igorant. maybe thats wht ur problem is u dont know anybody who has gone through this or is going through with it.
oh ya ofcourse working in the fields at 85-95 degree weather waking up 3am to go collect cans( i watched this story in tv) ya of course this is very easy compared to mantaining ur legal status and going to college. oh ya u r absolutely right.
if another 11 million ppl r illegal 4-5 yrs later(which is very highly likely) we will make them legal too
so r u in student visa who pays for ur college? i mean many students in US doing under grad work illegally. so one might say how is that fair u r taking a job frm an american.

It's really sad that the bill got blocked in the test vote. I hope it gets passed after two weeks.

And it is not a question of fairness. Fairness कै कुरा गर्ने हो भने पनि most of us who are in USA in some kind of visas except DV or H-1 have worked "illegally" or got paid "under the table" one time of another. So, we cannot say that only illegal immigrants are lawbreakers and the rest of us are ultimate law abiders. The fact remains that if we want, we may eventually get green card if we stay on track. It is just a question of how many years it will take. Another fact that is that most of us on multiple visas can go to Nepal and come back whenever we want. But the illegal immigrants don't have such privileges, yet they have still contributed to American economy.

And another fact is that guest worker program is not an amnesty. Many hurdles must be overcome before one gets a greencard. It's not easy.

I will be glad for our Nepali brethren if they are able to get guest worker status and are on their way to green card. And from what I have heard from new green card holders, life is not easy even after green card. It's a whole new ball game, they say - lots of new responsibilities, new expectations and all that.

Pandit jee,

You mean to say dishwashing is not a job? I have done dishwashing when I was a student -when I worked in the school cafeteria. And if it comes to that, I am ready to that again. Dishwashing job for immigrants is just another way to make a living. I could be mistaken but your remarks sounded disdainful and could not resist posting this reposte.

if all these illegal aliens get a green card, it would be a slap to all the legal aliens in the US and many more who has returned to their native countries because they couldn't get the residency.

and yes more bad news.......by offering illegal aliens a green card Bush
and his government is inviting more illegals and possibly terroist into this country soon.

Thanks America. You are known as a country with strict law. But not really when you want. Legal immigrants have hundreds of hurdles from any paperworks to tax benifit. But you support nonimmigrants make them citizen......

How many American can say that they do not descend from an immigrant family? How many American can say their forefather was not an Irish, Scottish, English, German and so on and so forth?

I agree with some of the Nepales in this thread that there are some Nepalese hypocrites who think they had every right to be in America because now they have legal documemnts and who do not don't. Well, like it or not, there would be Nepalese coming to the US one way or other, and there is nothing you hypocrites can do about it!

Koloketa..let me clear you one thing..all american who came here before are immigrants and so is australia land of immigrants..it is not like past and is history when there were times there was no law...red indians were the origin of USA and simlarly aborigines native of australia... and it doesn't mean you can settle on your own way in this century.....every country has its immiration law....personally i don't care..its good if some of our nepalese brother or sister is getting, but i will say priorities should be given to those immigrants who are staying here legally.....
I want to say one more thing..it should also be the land of law also...do you know australia has one of the toughest immigrants rule in the world and it is often critisied by human rights group....it deports people..similarly japan though it is not the counrty of immigrants also deport if it finds illegal immigrants..but america is very easy if you see in compare to australia and japan..at least it won' t deport any people..at least here illgal can work freely without thinking about deportation......and forget about cheap labour and bla bla over here..if you go every corner of the rich counrty,,every illgal people people is discrminated in the salary..the only thing in america you can voice your opinion but in other country where there is tough immigrants rule , they can' t voice fearing of deportation.....
