Vivid account of Maoist attack in bordering Indian town Indian newspapers have come up with vivid account of Maoist attack in bordering Indian town of Madhuban in Bihar on Thursday. Top Indian officials have claimed that as many as 100 Nepali Maoist rebels were also involved in the incident.
Under the heading ?Red Army from Nepal Repelled,? The Times of India?a leading Indian daily?reported that the Maoists, dressed in olive green uniforms and red headbands, were heavily armed.
"Some of them were carrying walkie-talkies," the daily quoted an Indian police officer as saying. They came on buses, jeeps and motorbikes and converged on the town from different directions.
The assault on Madhuban began with the Maoists taking up positions outside banks, the local police station and business establishments.
Among the extremists were dozens of women.
The Telegraph, another Indian newspaper, reported that there were some women in salwar kameez and red dupattas while others wore jeans and tops. The latter were taken to be Nepalese.
In its news item entitled ?Nepal Maoists join Bihar raid,? daily reported that the Maoists were believed to have escaped with IRs 12 lakh in cash from the branches of State Bank of India and Central Bank of India, the cash-box of the post office and the treasury at the block office.
They torched the police station and looted the armoury, besides ransacking the house of two supporters of the MP. They are also believed to have taken away an undisclosed amount of cash and jewellery from these houses, the news report said.
The Hindu, another leading newspaper, quoted chief of Bihar State Police, A R Sinha, as saying that 17 militants, three security personnel and a security guard at a government bank were killed in the clashes.
?The participation of Nepali Maoists has been proved. This is the first time they were involved,? he added.
